Pet peeve. Japanese people *always* do that. Even the most open minded friends can't help inventing reasons why you misinterpreted some random other Japanese person being ann asshole. "Shy" "embarrassed", they're never dicks and you're overreacting.

The coworker in question isn't Japanese though, just always assumes I'm using white privilege or being "too American" in every situation where I'm upset. It's weird.

Nah! Fair assumption! My Japanese coworkers are actually super sympathetic about immigration issues, as they hear their foreign coworkers complain about it so often.
