I would like a source link, because the ones I found with that quote seemed that she didn't like filming in general, not that she had anything against Yates himself. You made a lot of accusations and I'd like the know the sources for them because I'd never heard of them.

Obversa -1 points

I would like a source link

It's literally in the OP...but because you seem to have missed it, (Source).

You made a lot of accusations and I'd like the know the sources for them because I'd never heard of them

If you think that merely stating one's opinion is an "accusation", then I don't know what to tell you. That is my impression from all of the information I have gathered from the situation.

Again, I stated the source for the group interview in my OP: MuggleNet Live 2017. It was September 1, 2017 at the Hard Rock Live / Diagon Alley at Universal in Orlando. I attended in-person and recorded that interview.

However, you can also read a few earlier interviews here and here.

BavelTravelUnravel 2 points

I thought there may have been a different link because nothing Watson says in the article is specifically tied to Yates, but are necessities to the plot and/or part of the filming process. So to attack Yates's character and compare it against Emma Watson's feminism seems to extrapolate way too much out of that one quote.

Additionally, I'm still looking forward to reading your write up of the Coulson interview because I couldn't find anything that said he butted heads specifically with Yates.

Obversa 1 point

So to attack Yates's character as his chauvinism vs Emma Watson's feminism seems to extrapolate way too much out of that one quote.

You keep using that word, "attack / accusation". I would like to politely request that you please stop misrepresenting my post - and comments - as such. As I stated:

It's a 2-3 hour long group interview recording overall, but I will see if I can go through it sometime shortly and do a write-up. Given the length, it will take quite a bit of time to type up a transcript.

Yeah I've never seen anyone mention this before but Newt Scamander was for sure on the spectrum. I have two autistic cousins and had a few classmates and one good friend growing up, all on the spectrum (it's really not that uncommon, I bet most people know at least one person with autism), and New Scamander reminded me of all of them. If it was intentional (which in fairness it may not have been) then it's a very sweet and positive portrayal and incredibly accurate for many many people.

Damn, that's a long time to waste on a fuckboy. When did it become apparent?

Obversa 14 points

There were red flags earlier in the relationship, but it really became apparent after he moved away for 6 months. When we were physically apart (i.e. no sex), he basically just stopped trying in the relationship, and mentally checked out.

He went from being all "I love you so much, I don't want to leave you, and I'm seriously considering proposing" to "I think we should break up, because now I'm surrounded by all of these hot, 'exotic' Latina and black chicks that I want to bang, and I have needs".

He also started becoming very emotionally / verbally abusive towards me, blaming me for "keeping him from sleeping with all of these hot chicks". He stopped apologizing; always saw himself as a victim / aways right; would be angry / upset when I brought up any issues, even gently; and would openly comment on how hot other women were (and how much he wanted to to screw them) in front of me.

He also started telling me that I was "inferior" because of my autism, and would snidely comment, whenever I would bring up something he did that I disliked, that "my autism was acting up again". He would also constantly poke my stomach, and tell me I needed to "lose some weight", even though I was the same weight I'd always been throughout the relationship, and I was far from being overweight or obese.*

(He also knew that I had been anorexic, and almost been hospitalized due to weight loss, in high school, and still made the weight comments.)

It got so bad that even is own mom noticed, and apologized to me for his "crappy behavior".

Last but not least, he just became completely disinterested in sex. He stopped being able to 'perform' very quickly into it; I would always initiate; and he became obssessed with porn / cam girls. He started refusing to even have sex, unless he could watch porn of other women during the act.

Meanwhile, he also (he admitted to later) started cheating on me, by hiring a domme to "humiliate" him - he would tell me he would go to "parties", without disclosing that they were sex parties - and then started openly bragging about it afterwards.

liquorice6997 3 points

That's horrible!!!! I feel so bad for you. I'm so sorry that you had to waste so much time with this piece of sh..t I hope that one day you will find (if you haven't already) a man who will treat you right!

Obversa 2 points

Thank you for your condolences. :-) The worst part of it is that he didn't seem all that bad for the first several years. For all intents and purposes, he was a caring, kind, loving boyfriend...or, so I thought. (Aside from red flags that I waved away, of course.)

Since then, I haven't really dated much, and when I did, that guy very quickly turned out to be another, lying fuckboy. Turned out he even put on a "perfect gentleman" act just to get into my pants, then ghosted me when he lost interest. So I don't really see the need to date at the moment, and when I do again, it likely will only be after getting to know the other person a lot better.

Yes aha if the rumors are true and JK is actually a Squib or something I could just imagine the amusement some wizards would see at watching muggle quidditch. maybe some wizards would come across it one day and be like hey this hp fandom is like actually real and you wanna play real quiddich? (totally disregarding SoS here)

Obversa 2 points

Speaking as someone who grew up riding horses since about 7: Quidditch, in real life, always reminded me of the magical version of polocrosse. Only in real life, people ride horses, and not brooms.

Also, there's no Snitch or Bludgers, and players use sticks to throw balls longer distances, as opposed to just using their arms. However, the positions of the players match up with Chasers for Quidditch.

Polocrosse is a team sport that is a combination of polo and lacrosse. It is played outside, on a field (the pitch), on horseback. Each rider uses a cane or fibreglass stick to which is attached a racquet head with a loose, thread net, in which the ball is carried. The ball is made of sponge rubber and is approximately four inches across. The objective is to score goals by throwing the ball between the opposing team's goal posts.

[...] A team consists of six players, divided into two sections of three who each play either 2, 3 or 4 chukkas of six to eight minutes, depending on the rules of the tournament, with the two sections from each team alternating on and off the field each chukka. A match comprises four, six or eight chukkas. The three players in each section play the position of a No. 1, attack, a No. 2, midfield (a combination of defence and offence), or a No. 3, defence.

The team structure was designed to force players to pass the ball about amongst themselves, making it a better skilled, faster sport.

This should be at the top, Harry had to stay with a blood relative for his own mortal protection. Fred George and Ron, while valiant if short sighted (griffyndors amirite?) may have placed him in more danger by removing him from the Blood protection

Obversa 2 points

However, it's not explained how close of a blood relative it has to be for that protection to still remain in-effect. (I'm assuming the closer the blood relation, the stronger the blood protection.)

It's quite possible that since Harry's father, James, was a Pureblood, and pretty much all Purebloods are related, that Harry could've been raised by Sirius (another Pureblood), or James Potter's closest, living Pureblood relatives.

Yet that protection could've been weaker, and less effective, than Harry staying with Petunia's family, because the blood relation would've been a weaker one. Still, I personally find it strange that things like wards, and non-blood-magical protections, were mentioned as options as well.

For example, Hogwarts itself is regarded as one of the safest places in magical Britain, because it has probably the most amount of non-blood-magical protections on it.

I don't think people realize just how much power and influence that Dumbledore has, especially over people like McGonagall. She, quite likely, sees Dumbledore as a father figure, and has a close emotional bond with him.

Dumbledore's not just the Hogwarts headmaster and McGonagall's boss, he was literally her Transfiguration teacher, and most likely, her mentor. She probably grew up not only idolizing Dumbledore, but was his student, probably his best student. Dumbledore himself likely even helped her become an Animagus, and Transfiguration professor at Hogwarts when he became Headmaster.

Dumbledore also taught Tom Riddle in the same subject when Riddle was at school, and McGonagall is younger than Riddle by about 9 years.

I'm 99% sure those are the Catacombs of Paris, also called the "Catacombs of Death". They've been featured on documentaries like Nether World and Cities of the Underworld.

They're* infamous for not only housing millions of Paris's dead from over the centuries, but also being currently forbidden by law to enter, due to the dangers within. There are many mysteries in the Catacombs, and they are host to an equally enigmatic and secretive group known as the "cataphiles". The cataphiles defy French law to hold secret parties, meetings, and other gatherings in the Catacombs.

For example, in 2004, police discovered a fully equipped movie theater in one of the caverns. It was equipped with a giant cinema screen, seats for the audience, projection equipment, film reels of recent thrillers and film noir classics, a fully stocked bar, and a complete restaurant with tables and chairs. The source of its electrical power (as there is none in the Catacombs), and the identity of those responsible, remain unknown.

More recently, it's rumoured that the Catacombs may be home to "werewolves" or other cryptids. A mysterious tape that contained the last known sighting of its owner was discovered, with disturbing content that makes it look like...something chased him deep into the tunnels.

To this day, the tape's creator is missing, and most likely dead. It's very easy to get lost in the Catacombs, and several have died due to not being able to find their way back, or out.

I loved both movies. In a nutshell, for me at least, the Book of Life was a love story first and Coco was about signifying the "true" importance of family.

The two movies shared the Day of the Dead Theme, but were as different as night and day.

Obversa 2 points

Quite right! Also, if it weren't for Book of Life, there's a chance that Coco might never have been made. Jorge Gutierrez said something about a lot of studios (Disney-Pixar included) turning down the idea of a Day of the Dead movie at first, because they told him that the theme of death "was too dark / not child- or -family-friendly enough".

I don't think the open robe is book canon. The people at the World Cup who didn't understand how trousers worked seemed to count against that. Also, when James was bullying Snape and flipped him to reveal his "pants" in Snape's Worst Memory, those were underpants.

There are some contradictions to this, though. Mrs. Weasley knits jumpers, so the Weasley kids must wear muggle clothes. Maybe they just don't when they're wearing their uniforms.

As much as people get mad about the students wearing "muggle clothes" in the films, I think it's book canon. The books don't say they wear their uniforms 24/7. The fact that they have jumpers contradicts that.

Obversa 4 points

The people at the World Cup who didn't understand how trousers worked seemed to count against that

I'm guessing that these people were not English or British, but rather, more likely to be foreign wizards who were visiting the World Cup. This is because some cultures in the world (i.e. Arab or Middle Eastern cultures) are much more likely to wear robes [with little to nothing underneath] in the modern day.

This is also because of the following post on r/AskHistorians about "older styles of clothing", which I assume is the primary inspiration for "wizards wearing robes" in Harry Potter.

I'll take a stab at this, a brief one though. I was a Classics major in college. One thing I was interested in was ancient clothing.

From a western (Euro-centric) view, trousers were worn by people the Greeks considered barbarians, like the Bactrians and Armenians. They were also worn by their arch enemies, the Persians.

The Romans carried on this tradition. They considered trousers effete and barbarous (Lever, James. Costume and Fashion: A Concise History. Thames and Hudson, 1995, 2010).

Eventually, as Rome took over more of the world, trousers were more practical for men when riding horses, working, and for warmth. Byzantine (Eastern Roman Empire) court dress still consisted of robes, but trousers being more often worn by men, since they were more practical.

When you look at what men were wearing, it was often hose with a short or long robe over it. Sometimes two pairs of hose were worn: a tight under pair and a looser over pair. Eventually, this became "long johns" and trousers.

From another post in that thread:

There are a variety of theories as to why pants took over. One possibility is that the advent of horseback riding, especially in long-distance travel and combat, necessitated a garment that would minimize chafing of the legs both against the horse and against any grasses or leaves, etc. that one would ride around against.

However, it's also possible that robes in the British wizarding world, most likely, date back from a time in the medieval era, one where monks and priests handled the education, and/or wizards were also Muggle nobles, pre-Statute of Secrecy (i.e. the Malfoys, Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, the Ravenclaws, and the Fat Friar).

This is because the primary people to wear robes were typically priests / monks, or high-ranking authority officials. Usually people with weath, power, and status. Even then, however, they didn't wear "nothing" under the robes - they wore trousers (more likely if you were a commoner, or rode horses) or hose.

Anne Hollander's book Sex and Suits argues that the first truly tailored/fitted garments in Western history was the cloth padding worn under armor by knights and other fighting men. At this time, both men and women basically wore bags that weren't shaped to the body. The padding suits gradually influenced military uniform, which in turn influenced government fashion, which in turn influenced menswear in general. The older style did hang around on men, particularly in the uniforms of institutions that wish to project stability and authority, i.e. the gowns or robes worn by priests and judges. (Source)

For example, for practicality reasons, it's quite likely that figures like Godric Gryffindor - i.e. knights - wore trousers under their robes, or didn't wear robes sometimes at all.

Another source to read is "Clothing in Medieval Times and Social Status" by Tim Nash. This particular excerpt is very relevant when it comes to how British wizarding clothing is described by J.K. Rowling in the books:

For medieval royalty, extravagant, flamboyant, expensive and very colorful outfits were worn to make sure all who were witness of them were very ware of their high rank. Long house jackets were worn by noblemen and the length of the jacket often was an indicator of the wealth of the individual. Women in royalty wore long flowing gowns and very fancy hats or headpieces that were often so ornate that they hindered the wearer from doing anything practical at all.

It was only the very wealthy and people of the highest ranks that wore jewelry. For women, a ring brooch was a popular jewelry choice. There were also very particular kind of garb for specialty classes in society such as the military, knights and the clergy. High ranking members of the church often dressed in such a fancy way that their garb could rival kings and princes both in expense and ornateness.

From the passage above, for example, we can determine that Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, Salazar Slytherin, and Godric Gryffindor were all, for their time, likely very wealthy - they each owned gold / some form of jewelry (Goblin-forged golden sword, a diadem / crown, a golden jewel-encrusted locket, a golden cup).

Furthermore, the preferred colors of wizards and witches - purple and green, as per J.K. Rowling on Pottermore - also support the claim that robes are likely traditional in the British wizarding community due to association with authority / wealth / nobility, because the dyes used to produce these colours were typically reserved for nobles, royalty, and the wealthy.

Wizards at large in the Muggle community may reveal themselves to each other by wearing the colours of purple and green, often in combination. However, this is no more than an unwritten code, and there is no obligation to conform to it. Plenty of members of the magical community prefer to wear their favourite colours when out and about in the Muggle world, or adopt black as a practical colour, especially when travelling by night.

The International Statute of Secrecy laid down clear guidelines on dress for witches and wizards when they are out in public.

"When mingling with Muggles, wizards and witches will adopt an entirely Muggle standard of dress, which will conform as closely as possible to the fashion of the day. Clothing must be appropriate to the climate, the geographical region and the occasion. Nothing self-altering or adjusting is to be worn in front of Muggles."

In spite of these clear instructions, clothing misdemeanours have been one of the most common infractions of the International Statute of Secrecy since its inception. Younger generations have always tended to be better informed about Muggle culture in general; as children, they mingle freely with their Muggle counterparts; later, when they enter magical careers, it becomes more difficult to keep in touch with normal Muggle dress. Older witches and wizards are often hopelessly out of touch with how quickly fashions in the Muggle world change; having purchased a pair of psychedelic loon pants in their youth, they are indignant to be hauled up in front of the Wizengamot fifty years later for arousing widespread offence at a Muggle funeral.

The Ministry of Magic is not always so strict. A one-day amnesty was announced on the day that news broke of Lord Voldemort's disappearance following Harry Potter's survival of the Killing Curse. Such was the excitement that witches and wizards took to the streets in their traditional clothes, which they had either forgotten or adopted as a mark of celebration.

Some members of the magical community go out of their way to break the clothing clause in the Statute of Secrecy. A fringe movement calling itself Fresh Air Refreshes Totally (F.A.R.T.)* insists that Muggle trousers 'stem the magical flow at source' and insist on wearing robes in public, in spite of repeated warnings and fines.** More unusually, wizards deliberately adopt laughable Muggle confections, such as a crinoline worn with a sombrero and football boots.***

By and large, wizard clothing has remained outside of fashion, although small alterations have been made to such garments as dress robes. Standard wizard clothing comprises plain robes, worn with or without the traditional pointed hat, and will always be worn on such formal occasions as christenings, weddings and funerals. Women's dresses tend to be long. Wizard clothing might be said to be frozen in time, harking back to the seventeenth century, when they went into hiding. Their nostalgic adherence to this old-fashioned form of dress may be seen as a clinging to old ways and old times; a matter of cultural pride.

Day to day, however, even those who detest Muggles wear a version of Muggle clothing, which is undeniably practical compared with robes. Anti-Muggles will often attempt to demonstrate their superiority by adopting a deliberately flamboyant, out-of-date or dandyish style in public. (Source)

Sources for "green and purple" dyes once being rare:

As for the "rise of formal black" that Rowling mentions for withces and wizards, that was due to the Columbian Exchange (1492 onwards) bringing new, superior black dye to the Old World (and Britain).

I just realized that maybe this is why I didn't care for Inside Out. Maybe with my depression, I see all this sadness in my past as just memories of me being broken. Happiness is just a short reprieve until I once again drift back into seemingly perpetual melancholy.

I also didn't much care for Inside Out, and I think some of its hype came from being one of Pixar's (currently) last "original" films, along with Coco. While I haven't been diagnosed with depression, I have been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. That's ignoring the fact that the Slytherins and Gaunts were terrible bigots who were horribly, horribly inbred, though.

Obversa 1 point

One, we don't know anything about the Slytherins, because we only know of one current family member - Salazar Slytherin.

Two, it's mentioned multiple times within the books that Purebloods, as a whole, are generally "horribly inbred". Sirius Black even states this directly.

"The pure-blood families are all interrelated. If you're only going to let your sons and daughters marry pure-bloods, your choice is very limited; there are hardly any of us left." - Sirius Black (III)

Likewise, the Gaunts were hardly the only "bigots". It's pretty evidence that, by all of the pure-blood families being interrelated, pretty much all of them could be considered "bigots". Even Ron Weasley (a Pure-blood) shows some signs of this in the books, particularly in his "bigoted" views towards House-Elves.

Chinoiserie91 0 points

It's publicity. She is promoting the films and the play. It does not mean she said more than "looks nice" and decided that it's a small change. The fact is that if you read the descriptions of the wands in the books they don't match so the film ones can't possibly be right. Writes often are fine with small changes in their work, visuals expecially. And even with bigger ones they don't complain but just promote the work as per contract unless they really get annoyed. See how GRRM still promotes Game of Thrones in a similar way even though he doesn't even watch the show these days.

It always bothered me that we didn't get to see any Weasley cousins since the family is supposedly so huge. I wonder what Mafalda was like.

According to J.K. Rowling, she was a "match for Hermione", but also very gossipy and "eager to prove herself to the Golden Trio" to impress them. Meaning that Mafalda wasn't just as smart and as academically driven as Hermione, but she was a Slytherin who actively gathered 'intel' for Harry & Co.
