TIFU by copying an answer. I learned that the Japanese don't f*ck around when it comes to rules the hard way. by [deleted] in tifu

Thank you everyone for all of your kind word, reading all of the funny/caring/motivating comments made me feel a lot better. I've deleted the post because the university is still in the judging process and I'm afraid it will have consequences. I just wanted to share my story with some people, and not for it to go viral. When the entire process is over I will post an update. I wish you all the best!

I've only been here for 4 months now but this is my impression so far, for example I've seen lab members fight with each other about their research after they got drunk just because they never could disagree or even discuss stuff with each other while working. Also none of my professors could give me a clear answer about what exactly the passing criteria was, or when and how we would get our grade. Maybe it's because I compare Japan with the Netherlands where we try to communicate as much as possible and are very direct (sometimes too direct).

No, because the professor was not clear about when he would give the assignment, he said "you will get the assignment in the upcoming days", and also the fact that he ignored my e-mail when I asked about the assignment first and later replied immediately to my other e-mails is also weird. I just never expected that the assignment would go to my spam folder, in the days before I was literally waiting for the assignment and just busy with other courses.

I seriously have no idea why I didn't do this, I think it was a combination of last minute rush/panic and always wanting to submit the best possible result. So stupid I know...

Man that's the reason he didn't believe me (even with proof), because it was such a coincidence to find it out the morning before the deadline. I wish I would've checked it after the deadline.

I literally witnessed a student handing in an assignment 1 minute late and the professor did not accept his report. Everyone in class (except the Japanese) was in shock.

Also if you notice that multiple e-mails from an important sender goes to your spam, mark the sender as safe as soon as possible.

You have no idea, I will even whoop my future grandchildren's ass if they ever even think about cheating.

I also have a weak for gabling. No without joking I think you're absolutely right, but man while explaining my situation there was zero sympathy from the professors.

I'm seriously considering this option, and if I would, I would mainly do it for my girlfriend, and she would not accept, but yea I think that atm I'm way to stressed to make a decision.

I agree cheating is cheating, but it's just that one small subquestion ruining everything is sad.

Thanks man, no I'm here until February, It's a beautiful country but I also spoke about this with a foreign professor and he mentioned that Japan has dark sides that Japanese try to not show, if you look at for example the working culture or the hierarchic system, no I definitely do not plan a career in Japan, my time here so far has made me value the Dutch culture and living standard so much more.

I visited the exchange office and they would also take a look at it, and they were also in shock that due to this I would fail so many courses, but again they reminded me multiple times of the fact that "rules are rules".

And no I do not plan a career in Japan.

I understand but the Japanese can be quite vague (including passing criteria), the professor said "you will get the assignment in the upcoming days", and other than checking my spam folder I had enough to do.

I never knew that there was an original version of the modern "Jonas Blue - Fast Car ft. Dakota". I feel a bit embarrassed, but I am so glad I found it out now!
