jfif instead of jpeg when drag & dropping images to desktop

Whenever I drag and drop a jpeg from a webpage to my desktop (Windows 8.1), the image is saved with a .jfif extension instead of .jpeg. This occurs no matter which site I drag and drop an image from. I'm using Firefox 32, but this problem has persisted for the last couple versions of Firefox. Other browsers and other image formats do not have this issue.
Any ideas on how to fix this? This occurs with a fresh install of Firefox, so it does not appear to be an extension that's causing the problem. Thanks. Specific images to test with?
The ones I tried gave me either .jpg or .jpeg. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.19) Gecko/20110420 SeaMonkey/2.0.14 Pinball CopyURL+ FetchTextURL FlashGot NoScript
The problem occurs on any site that I try to drag and drop images from. Here's an example: http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/ca ... mages.html
The images on that page are clearly jpegs with .jpg extensions. But when I drag them to my desktop, they are renamed with .jfif extensions. Hi,
I just tried some & they were converted to .gifs. Then I tried, "Save image as" & it was saved as a .jpg. Weird or wot? Nice pics too. Ancient Amateur Astronomer

Just to make sure here... that fresh install represented a brand new profile as it came out of the box? ... not changes or installs made to it? It is interesting that LIMPET235 tried the same thing and came up with Gif... is weird. As you can see she's (The CAT) always alert and on the prowl for Meoware !!
Nope.
Just tried it again & now I get .gif images saved not as I originally posted .jpg. Cleared the cache etc. View image > Save image as....= .gif. Even when viewing the image "Properties" it states .gif. No idea. Ancient Amateur Astronomer

Nothing is being converted.
There are both jpg & gif versions of each file & I suppose how you go about getting the file, depends on what you get. Each jpg/gif pair of the same file are actual jpg/gif files, different from one another (though looking the same). D&D to desktop gives you a .gif. Save Link Target As gives you a .jpg. Save Image As gives you a .gif. If you click the image, which opens a .jpg, then Save Image As gives you a .jpg. > when I drag them to my desktop, they are renamed with .jfif extensions I'm not seeing that at all? Perhaps some oddity with Win8? Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.19) Gecko/20110420 SeaMonkey/2.0.14 Pinball CopyURL+ FetchTextURL FlashGot NoScript
That "Save Link as", ^, must've been what I selected the 1st time. Sorry.

Correct. I created a brand new profile with all the default settings left intact, and the problem still persists.
Dragging and dropping images to my desktop from Firefox used to work up until maybe 2 or 3 versions ago. The same operation works fine with other browsers, so I don't think it's a Windows 8.1 issue.
The images keep the proper .jpg extension when I choose "Save As". They only get renamed to .jfif when I drag and drop them to my computer. I don't know... I just used one of my bare-bones Firefox profiles (to eliminate all my extension controls) and dragged a pic (jpeg) to my desktop and it landed as a jpg... which I guess is all right.

I did a clean reinstall of Windows 8.1 and the problem no longer exists. So apparently there was some type of weird conflict with my original Windows installation and Firefox.
As I gradually reinstall my old applications, I'll check to see if the problem reappears.
