I disagree with your analysis but I have a hard time pinning down why. I'll still try to explain though, maybe it will make it clearer in my head. I didn't find it too feel-good, although I find most american movies too cheesy. I found Hidden Figures

heart wrenching, and even the end was bitter. The way they all rejoiced while forgetting who had done all the calculations? Only as an afterthought they kinda sorta acknowledge her. That felt too real.

The toilet sign smashing scene? All three main characters had been fighting by themselves with no "white savior" but there's only so much you can do when you don't have the power. What the guy did was nothing compared to what they accomplished by

themselves. But it was a thing only he (or someone in power) could do, it showed how easy it would have been for him to do much much earlier if only he had cared a little bit instead of imagining that his best employee was just a slacker.

To me that scene showed the importance for the privileged to use their privilege.

I didn't know the antagonists had been made up and on that I agree with you - there surely were enough real bad behavior not to invent people. They should have used real people.

(Not related to your take, but some things I liked about the movie: black women being complex, relatable people instead of caricatures of black women; sexist black guy showing the need for intersectionality (

I get what you mean that the ending was bittersweet - but it just didn't resonate with me. It felt like more of a footnote compare to the court victory and all the girls working with the IBM.

And the toilet smashing would resonate more with me if not for both Costner's character and the conflict itself being made up. There must have been equivalent things which really happened.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by resonate, but as a black woman in tech who also lives in a unapologetically xenophobic country, it did hit the right spot. That was both good and painful

Ya my being a white straight cos dude probably skews me perception and appreciation of the film. And I still liked it - I just wanted a little more

And maybe resonate isn't the right word - but the made up arc with made up people felt like an easy cliche. A very palatable confrontation to be resolved.
