英語の長文を読む時,
一文ずつの訳は分かっているつもりでも,
読み進めていくほどに
作者のそもそもの意図が分からなくなる…
英語教師をさせて頂いておりますと,
「まじめ」な方に限って, 多く聞かれる声です
先月末に, そのような方のためになるかなと思い,
この記事を書かせて頂きました↓
今回はこの時, 書き切れずにいました内容を
補足するものです
前回お伝えしたかったのは
読む前に
But か However で始まる文と短文をチェックする
ということでした
今日は
読む前に
段落ごとの第一文 (Head) と最終文 (Tail) をチェックする
ことがポイントです
小説以外の文章ですと, 筆者が意図していようといまいと,
大抵必然的に「主張の置き所」が絞られてきます
繰り返しになりますが,
① But か However で始まる文
② 短文
③ 段落ごとの第一文 (Head) と最終文 (Tail)
です
逆にこうしたポイントに主張が置かれていない文章は,
何が言いたいのかどうも分かりづらい, もしくは
「文学的」散文詩のようなものになってしまいます
論理的な文章ほど,
筆者は「正確に」伝えようとする意図が高まる訳で,
その意味で「型」にはまっていく必要があるのです
ただ, 稀にですがこの ① と② が見当たらない,
But, However がなく, 一文ー文が長い,
かなり読みづらい文章もあります
そうした時には ③ をまずマークすることを
おススメ致します
たとえば, 次のような長文があったとします
Recently, some researchers have found that while we human beings have only 3 to 5 opsin genes in the eyes that can recognize colors, dragonflies have as many as 15 to 33. This means that they can see the world more and more vividly than we can, whether they do in the morning or at night. If they were artists and could paint something as really as they see, even a Picasso wouldn’t be able to beat them just artistically. In addition to this, they have fine compound eyes that can catch several aspects of the real world simultaneously. Given the stereotype that we are superior to the other living thigs, we should reflect upon our attitudes towards them.
We have already known that some animals have certain kinds of ability that we don't have, which has enabled us to eliminate our bias against them. For instance, dolphins can use ultra audible sounds to capture small fish; dogs can detect οur cancers so accurately by using their olfactory perception, or the sense of smell. None of us can defeat them in these respects, no matter how hard we may try to, no matter how much we may study, or no matter what medicine we take. And now that we have got to understand even some insects have greater abilities than those we have, it’s time we gave up the arrogant idea that we can use the other organisms because we are the greatest one on this planet: our intellect has been telling us that we must be modest towards the reality and learn from it as profoundly as possible. The true learning should be something that leads us to the wisdom and compassion to others, including animals, insects, plants, microbes; that is, all living things.

俗に言うディスコースマーカー (文脈指示語句) も
ほぼ見当たりません
ちょいワル指定をしても良い英文だと思われます
でも, 御安心を! そんな時には,
Head ＆ Tail を,
本文を読む前にチェックすればいいのです!
この長文の当該箇所を赤で示しますと,

でも, 仕方ありません
ちょいワルな相手に遭遇してしまったのですから…
４文読めば何とか全貌がつかめる!
そう思って, 先にこれらだけ読んじゃうんです!
もし知らない単語や構文があっても,
カタカナ読み＆スラッシュリーディングして, スルー!
あとで分かってくるよ, と自分を笑いつつ…
さて, 赤文字の Head & Tail４文を順に訳してみますと,
・最近, とある研究者たちが発見したには, 私たち人間は色彩を認識する眼の中のオプシン遺伝子を３～５種しか持っていないが, トンボは１５～３３種も持っているということだ
・他の生きものより私たちの方が優れているという先入観念を考慮すると, 私たちは彼らに対する私たちの考え方を反省すべきだ
・私たちはすでに, 動物たちの中には私たちが持っていない特定の能力を持っているものがいるということは知っていて, そのことで彼らに対する偏見を排除することができてきた
・真の学問は知恵と, 動物,・昆虫・植物,・微生物, つまりあらゆる生きものも含む, 他者に対する慈悲へと私たちを誘うものであるべきだ
となります
ここまできっちり訳せなくても,
・人間よりトンボは眼がめっちゃいいらしい
・人間の方が優れてるって考え方は反省しなきゃ
・だって, すごい能力のある動物もいるって
分かってるし
・ホントの学問って, 知恵と全ての生きものも含む
他者への慈悲を深めてくれるものでないとね
ぐらいの, ゆるゆるな解釈でもできれば, 少なくとも
ラスト一文が本文の主張のメインベクトルだ
ということが, ほぼ見えちゃいます
小生が大学院１年生の時,
途方もない量の課題を出す教授のゼミを
知らず知らず取ってしまいました
どれくらいかと言いますと,
担当になってしまうと,
哲学概論の英文書を
1週間で約100ページ読んで,
Ａ４で５枚分のレポートにまとめ発表する,
というものでした…
半年に１回しか回ってこないのですが,
こともあろうかトップバッターに
小生が指名されました
胃が痛くなるほどどうしよう, と
一晩悩んだ挙げ句,
明るくさばさばした助手の方が, そう言えば
何でも気軽に相談に来てね―
と仰っていたので, お言葉に甘えて
どうやればいいのでしょうか? と
聞きに行きましたところ,
あ, あんなのね, 真に受けちゃだめだよ,
他のこともあるし, 人間的にムリでしょ,
だからそういう時は,
段落の最初と最後だけはきっちり読んで,
あとはつじつま合わせればいいんだよ
留学先でドイツ人もそんなことばっかり
やってたよ!
かくして, 小生はまさしくそれだけをやり,
１日でレポートを仕上げ
ゼミの発表に臨みましたら,
教授から
上手い！よくまとめました！お手本だ！
と, おほめ頂けました…
あの～, ８割方読んでないんですけど…
なんて, もちろん言えませんでした
久々に思い出しました
こうした自らの過去の「罪業」を
