MVP bonus for Brownlee

Justin Brownlee

Barangay Ginebra PBA governor Alfrancis Chua said yesterday even as Justin Brownlee wasn’t named the Best Import for the justconcluded Governors Cup, he’ll receive the bonus anyway stipulated in his contract like the award was given.

“We’re giving him the bonus just the same,” said Chua. “Justin deserves it. He’s the kind of import who doesn’t give importance to individual goals because his focus is team. Justin came over for a reason – to win championships. Although he wasn’t named Best Import in the last two Governors Cup, that’s okay with him. What’s more important is we won both championships.”

Trump waits for election charge

DONALD Trump was last night braced for explosive developments in the investigation into alleged Russian involvement in the US presidential election.

Charges were filed on Friday and placed under a seal by a federal judge.

It is not known who will be indicted, but it could be Mr Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort or exnational security adviser Michael Flynn.

A city put to the test has a team up to the task

houston — The huge sign beside the highway as you come from the airport into this city says, “Houston Strong.” Those two words apply to the willpower of millions here who strive every day, and will have to continue that effort for months and years, to repair the damage done by Hurricane Harvey and its monstrous flooding.

Measured on that scale, a baseball team is a small thing. Yet, in their way, the Houston Astros strive to exemplify “Houston Strong,” or, at the least, live up to the standard of grit and resilience that has distinguished and dignified this city in its worst times.

On Wednesday in Los Angeles, the Astros came from behind to earn the first World Series win in the history of this Houston franchise. On Friday night here at Minute Maid Park, to double the pleasure, to raise the roof and to move halfway to a baseball title, the Astros did it again, beating the Dodgers, 5-3, in Game 3 for a 2-1 lead in this World Series.

BOYZONE STAR’S MONEY

PAYBACK: Keith Duffy, above and left in Boyzone, got a huge tax rebate

What did your parents teach you about money? THAT it was hard to come by. My folks worked hard to provide a good lifestyle for me and my two brothers. They did not have any spare cash. My dad was in the rag trade, selling men’s and boys’ clothes while my mother was a hairdresser working from home. We never wanted for anything – most of our holidays were spent in caravan parks on the east coast of Ireland.

We were not poor, but I remember once asking my folks: ‘Are we rich?’ My mother’s answer was: ‘We are rich in love, son.’ How did childhood change your attitude to money? IT made me want to achieve. I had a happy childhood but knew I wanted more than my parents could give me. I soon realised I had not got the money that some of my friends around me had. That did get to me. I knew I needed to go out and earn my own money. What was the first paid work you ever did? WHEN I was 13 I got a job on a golf driving course. When you are bending down picking up hundreds of golf balls, wearing a helmet because the driving range is open at the time, £2.50 an hour is not a lot of money, believe me. I really did know the price of a pound at the age of 13.

Monday makeover smoothie bowl

When you feel like something to eat rather than drink, make a smoothie in a bowl

Photography & styling by Tam West

This smoothie bowl is incredibly easy to whip up. Mangoes give it that sweet tropical flavour, as well as a good dose of natural antioxidants, fibre and vitamins like A, B, C & K. I often share this bowl with my daughter after preschool as an afternoon wholefoods treat, or even as a dessert.

Tax plan is tilted against state

GOP leaders say lower-tax areas are subsidizing California. It’s the opposite, and their plan could make the disparity worse.

J. Scott Applewhite Associated Press
REP. KEVIN BRADY (R-Texas) asserts that the economic boost from the Republican tax plan would more than make up for any additional dollars that high-tax states such as California send to Washington.

WASHINGTON — The main Republican argument for killing the state and local tax deduction is that the break forces residents of low-tax states to subsidize those in California and other high-tax states.

India starts trade route to Afghanistan via Iran

NEW DELHI, Oct 29, (AP): India on Sunday shipped its first consignment of wheat to Afghanistan by sea through Iran’s strategic Chahbahar Port, launching a trade route bypassing longtime rival Pakistan.

The shipment, an Indian gift for Afghanistan, was sent from the western seaport of Kandla. It will be taken by trucks to Afghanistan from the Iranian port.

The new trade route follows an air freight corridor introduced between India and Afghanistan in June last year to provide greater access for Afghan goods to the Indian market.

Sydney FC aim to equal the best start by champions

But if Sydney FC need any further motivation to win at Melbourne City on Friday night — beyond stepping past City into first place — three points would allow the Sky Blues to equal the best ever start by a reigning champion in the A-League.
