I don’t think I’m better than anyone. I do, however, think it’s impossible to write articles extolling the virtues Japan or commenting on social problems if you have very little normal contact (i.e. beyond being the token gaijin) with Japanese people.
I never said they didn’t. I originally said I hate (personally dislike) when people do because they are unoriginal and incorrect. And truthfully, it is problematic that this makes up the majority of online media about Japan. Then people guilty of this got butthurt.

Fair enough. Take your point but disagree about living here 3-5 years as clearly a lot of great travel literature wouldn't then qualify.

Sorry if it was unclear, but I was mostly referring to social or cultural commentary pieces. Whether they give accurate representation (beyond factual details) would depend on the reader, although you could still say the majority of places chosen for them are terribly unoriginal.
