Women & Stairs

I have come up against this dilemma a lot recently...

If you are with a colleague, friends wife, heck, any woman you are not super familiar with or need to keep a professional / respectful relationship with and you need to go upstairs, but first need to open a door or two to get to said stairs (my apartment building & office) do you:

a) open the door and let her go first like a gentleman, then watch her    go up the stairs in front of you

or

b) just walk straight in and go up in front of her

Never ever been an issue, but I always automatically do a) and let her go first, but am often conscious one is pretty much by default at an eye level with her booty.

Female point of view..

I hate it when men do not pass, yeah, for what reason!?

I like it to be this - open the door or I can do it, whichever, then when I move to the left, that they do the courteous thing and take the hint and overtake, and yeah, and even open the next door.. that is in an ideal world.. I am so idealistic.

If they stay behind scuse the pun, then it is obvious in a stairwell that is not that narrow, that a person cannot not overtake!? Discourteous and not appropriate IMHO, in a public place or workplace this scenario would usually play out.

I take the elevators. Well, they're in the middle of the lobby and transparent... Many women at my job wear short skirts so I guess they don't mind the consequences.

Only worth looking it if said booty is a tasty one.

I don't think this dilemma has ever occured to me. But, I'm a male and, I don't pretend to know, much less understand what women think.

Much like the 'hold open doors, thread we had earlier, I hold open the door for anyone behind me, regarless of plumbing, As for following them up the stairs, I guess I just wind up following, since I haven't really given it any thought.

Damnit! Now, I'll be thinking about this everytime I enter this type of situation.

What hint?

Personally, if someone overtakes me on the stairs, and I'm moving at a "normal" pace, I wonder "what's the hurry?"

You ask this as if you have some manly obligation to look at a woman's ass if you're behind her.

If you're trying to professional and courteous, DON'T LOOK AT HER ASS!

Problem solved.

As I said, I've never had an issue. Most women Im with regularly seem to be far more comfortable with me than I am with them and they dont seem to have any issues wiggling their butt in my face while maintaining a conversation, but I just wondered in this ever increasingly PC world...

Quoting VapourTrails (Reply 1):
then when I move to the left,

Ah, but this can get technical - what if the door opens inwards and there is no room
Quoting Aesma (Reply 2):

I take the elevators.

Not an option. Besides, its the only exercise I get all day!!

Quoting Aesma (Reply 2):

Kinda what I was thinking too. If you are unwilling for people to look, then dont show. But there is some jailbate out there and I am aware of experiences where some girls are just out to cause a fuss.

In Japan this is somewhat of an issue.

girls here love miniskirts (and I love it when they wear it   ) But theres so many stairs here....girls often sort of grab the back of their skirt and pin it to their ass while they walk up stairs. Probably a good idea.

Also many girls here now wear shorts under their skirt.

Ive seen too many guys using their phones tho to film or photograph a girl's stuff up her skirt. ew.

I always feel such a lecherous pervert in japan. even if you are minding your p's and q's, it can be hard to avert gaze at times.

Especially if you're a sucker for form-fitting pinstripe pants - which many women in my office district seem very dedicated to wearing. I know what you mean, but you get used to it...

The problem in Japen is loads of nice butts but attached to bow legs, what the hell is the deal with Japanese females legs, hardly any are straight! A lot also appear to walk pigeon toed.

Yes, I should have clarified to add, and slow right down, to the point where I assume that it would be annoying to walk behind such a slow person, and passing would be a really good idea, I would think, to most people. If that doesn't work, I just wait till I get to the top of the stairs, then move on and forget about it and get on wth my day. It doesn't always annoy me, unless they are walking really close behind and stay there for the whole minute or two it takes to climb stairs.. I certainly don't turn around or say anything..

If anyone in this world o' ours still pays heed to plain ol' proper etiquette, the gentleman is always to be lower on the stairs than the lady (she goes ahead of him on the upward journey; he goes ahead of her on the downward (that is the ONLY situation in which proper etiquette requires - or even allows - the gentleman to go first)).

This is for the simple reason that there is always a peril of falling when on the stairs. (The etiquette rules are written out such that the man is there to break the chick's fall, as if she's the only one who could possibly fall. Luckily the dictates of the sexist old rule jibe with practical reality, in that the dude could also fall, and it's best for both parties if she isn't in the way when that's happening.)

I'm not sure I've ever encountered this, or if I have, it has not left a lasting impression. Especially, since I didn't realize this was an issue.

I suspect that if someone slowed down to "annoyance level" I would pass depending on how much of a hurry I'm in. Understand, I normally take steps two-at-a-time when I'm alone, so I think I would notice if someone slowed down rather abruptly.

Again, didn't realize it was an issue. Part of me says I will be more concious of the dilemma; another part of me says it's your (the females') dilemma to deal with. As I've tried to teach my daughter; only she can allow herself to be victimized by a lecherous person.

Sorry to mention this, but not all men are lascivious asses, stuck in their teenage years, trying to stare at a female´s anatomy at every chance they get. A few of us know how to respect a woman and not objectivize them all the time.

At work, I am so busy that the least thing in my mind is looking up a female´s behind in the stairs, or cleavage when she´s sitting in a desk. And if I find said female attractive I will avoid staring at her body in a disrespectful way.

A public place is a different story. At a nightclub, well, you get the idea. In any case, staring or oggling someone in a manner that is obviously discomforting in ANY situation/place is something I don´t do.

Quoting fr8mech (Reply 4):

Exactly. Now, I´m going to think about this everytime I´m on the stairs. There goes my lunch hour workout...

Ummm.... I generally do two things, I wait a few moments before I start up the stairs to provide some space and then I:

Variation on a philosophical question:

If you're a chick walking up a flight of stairs, and there's a guy behind you also utilizing the stairs...

does it make a damn blamed bit of difference, at all, under the sun, in the whole wide world, EVER?

This is generally the case I believe. That said, there are times of year (and month) when head-snapping can and does occur. This is not to be confused with staring, trying to take covert pics, and other forms of lechery - which are basically illegal and dehumanizing.

I actually saw a US military guy walk up to a girl in Yokohama station and say 'damn, look at that ASS! Can you turn around baby? I wanna take a picture'. She hardly understood what he was saying...it was pretty terrible.

It's even worse when the chick has a wardrobe malfunction. I remember waiting for the Chuo Line and this hot chick walks by me...left to right, front to rear---oops, her rear has a problem- her skirt was accidentally tucked into her panties...oops!

I know of a rule regarding this, that goes like this:

Upstairs: Women first, then men. In case she falls, the men is standing behind her and makes sure she doesn't get hurt.

Downstairs: Men first, then women. Again, if she falls over, the men is still in her way of completly falling down the stairs.

I don't know if this is still relevant, but that's how I've learned it.
