The history of Armenian cinematography comes from early 1920-s. Film ”Namus” was made in 1925, and is considered to be the first Armenian feature film.

The director of the movie is Hamo Beknazarian.  It is based on Aleksandr Shirvanzade’s (Armenian writer) famous novel ” Namus” written in 1885. This old Armenian brilliant movie is a perfect reflection of strict rules and traditions among Armenian families.

Very often this extremist behavior lead to such tragedies, as happened to the main characters of the film. Though ”Namus” is a silent film, it carefully depicts everything as it is, which once again emphasizes the uniqueness of this movie.

Armenian Movies: #2 “Pepo”

Armenian cinematography was very productive during Soviet times. “Pepo” is one of the old Armenian movies, which is based on Gabriel Sundukyan’s famous same-titled play.

The director of this wonderful Armenian movie is Hamo Beknazarian and the music is composed by famous Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian.

This film had a huge success and not once represented Armenian culture abroad. Though “Pepo” is a comedy movie, it shows that very often, life may be cruel to honest but naïve people. The example was the main character of the movie – Pepo.

All he did was not for his own sake, but for the sake of his siblings and also for reaching fairness. The movie is rather light watching one, however it has a deep meaning in it. Film “Pepo” is an old treasure of Armenian Movies, definitely recommended to watch.

Armenian Movies: #3 “Guys from the Army Band”

This is one the most beloved movies among Armenians. Film is directed by Henrik Malyan and Henrik Margaryan in 1960. Here we can feel roller coaster of emotions.

Being a comedy movie, it also contains great wisdom in it. One thing is guaranteed: you will finish watching this movie with a mild smile on your face.

Thanks to this movie Armenian audience widely recognized some of its genius actors, such as Mher Mkrtchian, Sos Sargsian, Kim Yeritsian etc. By the way, you can easily find old movies like this online.

Armenian Movies: #4 “The Color of Pomegranates”

“The Color of Pomegranates” is an avant-garde film about the biography of famous Armenian troubadour Sayat-Nova since childhood up to his death.

The ways of expression are completely unique in this movie. Due to delicately chosen colors and symbols, Parajanov could give us an opportunity to travel to a completely new world – Sayat-Nova’s world.

There is so much symbolism, colors and harmony in this Armenian movie, that you’ll enjoy every second of it. “The color of pomegranate” is a revolutionary piece of art and has something new to say.

It is highly praised throughout the world and is considered to be one of the best films of all times.

In 2014 the film was digitally restored by famous American movie director Martin Scorsese and officially introduced during the Toronto film festival

Armenian Movies: #6 “The Men”

Another masterpiece of Armenian movie production is directed by Edmond Keoseyan. Movie demonstrates how strong can be the friendship between men. One of the four friends, Aram falls in love with a beautiful lady, named Karine.

However, she doesn’t have the slightest idea about that, and even doesn’t know who Aram is. This fact makes Aram suffer a lot. The other 3 friends do their best to help their friend and catch the beauty’s attention in rather peculiar ways.

Thanks to the director of the movie, the audience can easily get the idea of devotion and friendship.

The movie was so much loved by the audience, that even many year, a statue of the actors was placed in the central Saryan park in Yerevan.

Armenian Movies: #7 “Gikor”

Prepare napkins for crying a river. This movie belongs to those ones, which will surely make you cry.

“Gikor” is a tragic story about a village boy, who comes to the city and works for a cunning and cruel trader. Film is based on Hovhannes Tumanyan’s same-titled story, directed by Sergey Israelyan.

The sufferings of the little boy are so heartbreaking, that it doesn’t leave you without tears. “Gikor” is an absolutely brilliant movie, worth watching.

“The tango of our childhood” is a completely unique movie you should include in you watch-list. The movie shows how much can family mean to an Armenian woman.

Her husband leaves her and their children and goes to live with another woman, with whom he has love affair. However, she doesn’t belong to those type of women, who can tolerate it.

She does her best to win back her husband and bring up the children, which appears to be not an easy task.

They travel throughout the world and try to make people be aware of what a huge role Armenians played in Christianity. Now they have returned the Holy Land and share with their sacred memories. A good documentary, to know much about Armenian history!

Everything begins when an American tourist Bill comes for a vocation to Turkey, but suddenly appears in one of the Armenian villages near the border.

The naïve villagers, who don’t know even a single English word, think that the guy is a Turkish spy. The only one who knows English there is a beautiful Armenian girl, Ani.

Actors starring in the film are not only Armenians, but also from Hollywood. “Lost and found in Armenia” is a movie perfect for family watching and enjoying nice humor and great play of the actors.

This movie will make you once again think about real values of life more profoundly. The movie was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) victory.
