They tried to say that it soda doesn't hydrate at all and that's it's just all chemicals. And I had to explain to them diuretic properties, and how soda still hydrates people, just not as much as water. They didn't understand.

Besides guzzling water, milk is a top choice to refuel. Sodas, even diet ones, get a bad rap for lacking nutritional value, but they can still be hydrating. Juices and sports drinks are also hydrating – you can lower the sugar content by diluting them with water.

Coffee and tea also count in your tally. Many used to believe that they were dehydrating, but that myth has been debunked. The diuretic effect does not offset hydration.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding the purpose of this, and I hate to contradict WebMD, but this is kind of terrible advice.

Unless you’re doing hard work out in the hot sun, most healthy people don’t really need to devote thought and energy to “staying hydrated”. Most healthy people, when they aren’t hydrated enough, will feel thirsty and drink. Various recommendations like “you must drink eight glasses of water a day” are generally without any evidence base.

I’m just worried someone is going to see this, say “I need eight glasses of water a day, WebMD says soda is also pretty good, so I’ll drink eight glasses of soda a day. For my health.”
