Clients and customers can sometimes send files in odd file formats. The DirectDraw Surface file format is typically used for DirectX-compatible textures; these files are often used to texture game models and environments. GIMP, an open-source image editor, doesn’t support editing of DDS files by default, but installing the GIMP DDS plugin makes the program DDS-compatible.
1. Download the latest version of the GIMP DDS plugin from the official code repository (see Resources).
2. Double-click the downloaded ZIP file.
3. Copy the “dds.exe” to the GIMP plugin directory. By default, the plugin directory for version 2 of GIMP -- the latest veriosn as of June 2012 -- is located at “C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins.”
4. Launch GIMP, click the “File” menu and click “Open.”
5. Click the “All Images” menu and select “DDS image *.dds” to filter out all file types except for DDS. Select the file you wish to edit and click the “Open” button.
Warning
- Since DDS images do not support layers, if you add layers to the file while editing, you must flatten the image before saving or save each layer individually.
