That's an interesting vision of the Stacks...

I said the same thing to myself, but then rejected it because it's not the vision described in the book.

Agreed, nothing like what's described at all

This is not how I pictured them at all.

Yeah I just imagined a bunch of rectangle trailers on top of each other with a shitty metal fire escape style staircase.

Here is a still from the movie. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Ready-Player-One-Movie-What-We-Know-So-Far-120497.html

Edit: apparently not from the movie. Just normal stacks in Oklahoma I guess.

That's not a still from the movie.

Oh well shit. My bad.

That's just a cover from the book I'm afraid. Still miles more tame than what is depicted in the OP however.

That's the book cover. Which is also my vision of it. Because I saw it on the cover of the book...

Yep, just normal Oklahoma lmao.

[–]Administrator_Shard 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

There's a movie? How do they get around all the copyright?

It seems too high for ad hoc construction described in the book

The cliffs don't really scream Oklahoma city either.

It's not quite there, but the overall image looks a lot like the cover of the book I have.

definitely not how I pictured it.

more rows and columns.

but this is interesting.

I imagined it more "standard" but this is an intriguing vision

They're making a film of it aren't they?

Yes! Steven Spielberg is directing it which is perfect.

Let's hope that he can put a fuck ton of references in the film.

I want the Final Battle to create a shit ton of legal issues.

If anyone can pull it off it's him.

But that final battle is gonna be lacking in hype without all the pop culture references.

Exactly - the book revolved so much around references to copyrighted material, it's a shame the movie won't be able to capture the best references in the final battle, as well as many of the other worlds and gear that's talked about in the book. Hopefully the quests for the three keys aren't changed, I'd love to see what it would have been like to visually beat the Joust game against the king, etc etc.

Imagne the whole ending sequence. All the business about recreating War Games is probably going to be completely cut. Along with Blade Runner.

RP1 is better for Namco's trademark than that pacman movie ever was. I want to think at least that part is secured.

Time will tell... or the copyright on the game will ruin it for us. Rip.

I also hope the trailer won't spoil it for us, like reveal all the big names they have. If they keep things secret and then suddenly have yeah, we got that moments in the movie, that would be so much better.

[–]Dwight_kills_her_cat 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Christ. This movie is going to be so shitty without it

It might. Theres nothing that says they cant get permission to use that material.

Youve watched too much famiy guy. And imagine a 13 year old reading this book to realize there was another culture before I was born. That all those awesome old action movies that he saw in Telemundo were clearer now. That that arcade game he used to play at the barber shop all the time was from the 80s. That was me.

Fuck yeah! That's the only reason I'm not looking forward to the movie. I feel like it will never happen the way it's supposed to with all the potential legal issues.

After watching Lego Batman I believe it will happen.

HP, LotR and DC are all affiliated to Warner Bros. tho so it's easier. Not sure for the other ones. RPO's references are mostly from the 80s with someone either dead or from a company that's no longer existing so it might be a bit trickier. I want to believe.

Spielberg stated he won't be using alot of the references in the book, and many of the references to him won't be used either.

Interesting what he can make without those, since the book was a list of pandering 80's references with a cliche love story tied in.

I read a lot of people saying it would be hard for Spielberg to use all of the references. As if those brands don't want to appear in a Spielberg movie.

If they can't get the rights to Blade Runner, WarGames and Holy Grail in particular, there is no point in making the film.

He came out and said that a lot of his movies references wouldn't be in the movie.

Almost perfect. He refuses to put references to his own work in the movie which sucks.

This is kinda ridiculous to me. I read the book. The story takes place in a time when people can't afford normal homes, but people have the time and energy to create these sprawling megatowers of junk? This picture doesn't even match what was described in the novel. They're all just far too tall.

This picture doesn't actually have anything to do with the book, OP just titled this post like that because they saw some similarities.

But doesn't he describe the stacks in Oklahoma pale in comparison to some of the bigger cities. I'm gonna have to read it again but I think I can recall Parzival mentioning Rio at least once

In the book Wade's stack is 22 trailers high, so not far off from this.

I think it's not the size as much as opposed to how elaborate the image is. In my mind. It was simply trailers stacked right on top of each other.

I have an image of trailer park Jenga in my head above anything else

Yeah, in my head they just looked like boxes stacked on a pallet. This is way too elaborate for what was described in the book.

Yeah, I think it was just like a steel rectangular frame making platforms for each one.

I mean, it was 22 high.

Just finished the book. Wasn't overly a fan. I definitely enjoyed it but character development was almost nonexistent and some of it was just a bit stupid.

I agree. It's definitely weaker than most people claim.

The characterization and character development was extremely weak but admittedly most people read it for the world depicted in the book and not the characters.

    What book?

Ready Player One. It is a book about a young man growing up in a post apocalypse in which most of the world has receded into a virtual reality. The basic plot in that the inventor of said virtual reality system/richest man in the world has died and has left a series of challanges in the simulation. First person to finish these challenges will inherit his entire fortune. The big hook for myself and most people though is that the deceased man was absolutely obsessed with 80s nerd culture and so the book in full of references to classic films, tv, music, and more. It's a great little read.

Thanks I'll try to find it!

I'll give you a slight bit of caution about it. Overall the book is entertaining, but with a few bumps. A lot of my friends recommended it to me, so I decided to give it a shot. (Not really any spoilers, other than about pacing.)

For me, the first third of the book was, quite unfortunately, intolerable. The main character spends half a page, every third or fourth page, constantly reminding you of how terrible their life is and how they get made fun of by the other kids for this terrible life...despite other descriptions of the world showing that he's no worse than any of the other kids really and in many respects is actually doing quite well.

The second third of the book drew me in really quickly and I was fascinated. The final third of the book was pretty awesome with the exception of a couple particularly unrealistic parts.

One thing to be warned about is that the more you find out about their worlds economy, the less sense it makes.

Other then that, the pop culture references and such are fascinating and interesting, the dialogue is for the most part entertaining, and the world building (minus the parts I've mentioned) gives you an interesting setting, particularly within the video game.

tldr: You might not enjoy the start of the book, but it is worth it to get to the end.
