The Bureau of Labor Statistics released its June jobs numbers Friday. It didn't take long for conservatives to try spinning them harder than the teacups at Disneyland.

First, the numbers. The economy added 222,000 jobs last month, more than the 178,000 economists had expected. That's good! Unfortunately, wages are still rising way, way more slowly than needed in the post-Great Recession world. That's bad. And plenty of these jobs are seasonal, as is to be expected at the beginning of the summer.

But it is the topline number — the 222,000 jobs — that are getting the attention.

Vice President Mike Pence — or whoever handles social media for his office — tweeted: “Since day 1, @POTUS Trump has been rolling back federal regulations & cutting red tape. His agenda continues to strengthen our economy.”

Matt Drudge put a smiling emoji giving two thumbs up and wearing a MAGA hat at the top of his home page, while noting “GREAT AGAIN: +222,000 JOBS IN JUNE.”

That is great! Let's see the Kenyan Usurper Barack Obama top that! Why, just look at that loser, whose leadership in June of 2016 resulted in a mere 287,000 jobs being created.

Wait, that's more than 222,000. Oh dear.

In addition, CNS News reports that government jobs at all levels outgrew manufacturing jobs at a rate of 35 to 1 in June. A growing government and stalled manufacturing economy? Not exactly what Trump has been promising his fans or his buddies in the GOP.

Also, the coal industry did not add any jobs, which is not exactly what Trump has been saying the coal industry is doing.

Look, the importance of these topline numbers can be overstated. They are a snapshot of a moment in time in the economy. And it is debatable how much influence presidents have on monthly job numbers.

But if conservatives want to use these numbers to brag and yell “MAGA” and whatnot, we'll be darn sure to point out that by Trump's own standards, he is falling short.
