[–]Agronox [

Listen up, if you want to sell Reddit on the idea of turning the US into an apartheid state and that minorities are stupid parasites, that's free speech and the admins will protect you.

If you want to sell Reddit socks, that is NOT free speech and you should expect the banhammer immediately.

Hey! Reddit isn't just gonna let big sockorate come on in here and blatantly manipulate their website! Those poor white supremacists that simply want all the niggers, camel fuckers, and jewbalists to be savagely murdered, well they're just expressing their Jesus given right, clearly outlined in the first amendment of the constitution, which Trump wrote, being God's final prophet here on Earth. I'm sorry you can't just respect other people's opinions. Maybe you're the real bigot after all.

But sock selling is where they draw the line! You want to hock your crappy goods, you gotta do it like everyone else and do an AmA either as a celebrity or a popular novelty account (which is basically the same thing around here.)

What's the big plan? I'm pretty sure that place just ran off user post flags, possibly weighted somehow.

You're supposed to send the admins a message by messaging the moderators of /r/reddit.com.

And hope you don't receive this as a reply:

"Thanks for the heads-up. As you may know, we have recently sun-setted our self promotion policy. We recommend banning the user from your subreddit if you believe their posting activity is not inline with your community standards."

And of course everyone has this original idea to be the next YouTube quirky gamer/super chef star and they just want to hang out and tell you about their channel.

Someone paid money for it to be there and no one cares to stop it. This makes up a lot of your front page except they are more subtle normally.

From a commenter there, this is a very astute observation. I am on a state subreddit where a restaurant chain somehow keeps posting photo snaps having to do with their company and getting 100+ upvotes. I once looked up their ad agency and found that the agency has an entire social media department, complete with programmers and data specialists. I can only imagine how much of Reddit is shill content -- basically anything to do with businesses and politics.

[–]setfiretoflamesreally likes talking about food

/r/malefashionadvice gets this constantly. I hang out on the /new queue a lot, and I'm never surprised by how many attempts there are to get things through, and how many times a use will resubmit their post. I remember a similar sock company resubmitted 5-10 times in 10 or so minutes because they'd get removed immediately.

I'm a mod of my university subreddit, it's eye opening how much of this we get even as a little tiny niche sub.

It shouldn't be that startling; engagement rates are significantly higher for targeted ads than blanket ones. If you know where your market flocks, advertising there is extremely efficient, and university websites/subreddits are a prime advertising location.

I used to do some freelance marketing consulting while I was bored one summer and I increased a handful of business' foot traffic by almost 30% just by using Snapchat geofilter ads on the nearby campus. Cost the businesses like 25 bucks a day for a week and the increase in business lasted for a few months.

Well they really won't like me then, I do my best to bar any ads on mine. You only get to promote if you are involved in the sub outside of that. We have other local subs to spam with ads.

Yeah that's probably the best call. That said I know a few people that have made a decent amount of money being a moderator on subs like yours. It's tough to resist.

Eh I make enough money and if it ever became a sub that required a ton of effort or anything like that was happening I'd leave. That's just silly.

I took it up because the old mods were long gone and no one was dealing with the spam and stuff and I wanted a place students could get help and advice that's useful.

For a while, even /r/trashy was getting spammed with ads for trash pickup services. Even /r/drama gets them, albeit not stealth ads. Though once a marketing consultant did infiltrate the sub and use it as an example of how to engage an audience in a way that seems organic on his blog. As someone simply attempting to browse reddit while enjoy their delicious McDonald's hamburger I have to disagree with this comment.

Anything tangentially related to a new movie coming out has marketing behind it. The formula the marketers use is pretty easy, but works extremely well. They'll post something about one of the actors involved, but it will be a charming behind the scenes moment from a past movie they were in that's a Reddit favorite. Or, pics will have something about "here's a screenplay I got back with notes from Scorsese when I was 18" and it'll happen to be the director of the film coming out in a week. Stuff like, here's this TIL about Chris Pratt and Anna Ferris that's super adorable and the timing is exactly before his new movie. Or, about Marvel movie is coming out, let's roll out all the Stan Lee reposts that always hit front page. The posts about Stan Lee's wife this week were probably some of the first authentic posts about him in a long long time.
