You should check out the sub he created. He must be asleep because it's almost all critical posts.

Edit: /r/sockerclub

If only the admins cared this much about white supremacists, eh?

[–]Agronox [

Listen up, if you want to sell Reddit on the idea of turning the US into an apartheid state and that minorities are stupid parasites, that's free speech and the admins will protect you.

If you want to sell Reddit socks, that is NOT free speech and you should expect the banhammer immediately.

The brazen post they made to bestof was pretty funny though.

so glad we got rid of /r/spam

How do they remove spam now?

What's the big plan? I'm pretty sure that place just ran off user post flags, possibly weighted somehow.

People will always abuse spam tools like a weapon but Christ reddit, at least have a plan first.

You're supposed to send the admins a message by messaging the moderators of /r/reddit.com.

Right, but that sub is dedicated to the great evil of...saying names rather then actually calling out shady advertising.

I wonder if the posters in that sub take the same approach in real life.

"Boy, I could really go for a Coke."

"SHILL!!!!!!"

Someone paid money for it to be there and no one cares to stop it. This makes up a lot of your front page except they are more subtle normally.

From a commenter there, this is a very astute observation. I am on a state subreddit where a restaurant chain somehow keeps posting photo snaps having to do with their company and getting 100+ upvotes. I once looked up their ad agency and found that the agency has an entire social media department, complete with programmers and data specialists. I can only imagine how much of Reddit is shill content -- basically anything to do with businesses and politics.

I'm a mod of my university subreddit, it's eye opening how much of this we get even as a little tiny niche sub.

It shouldn't be that startling; engagement rates are significantly higher for targeted ads than blanket ones. If you know where your market flocks, advertising there is extremely efficient, and university websites/subreddits are a prime advertising location.

I used to do some freelance marketing consulting while I was bored one summer and I increased a handful of business' foot traffic by almost 30% just by using Snapchat geofilter ads on the nearby campus. Cost the businesses like 25 bucks a day for a week and the increase in business lasted for a few months.

Well they really won't like me then, I do my best to bar any ads on mine. You only get to promote if you are involved in the sub outside of that. We have other local subs to spam with ads.

Yeah that's probably the best call. That said I know a few people that have made a decent amount of money being a moderator on subs like yours. It's tough to resist.

[–]Rebelrbl [

Eh I make enough money and if it ever became a sub that required a ton of effort or anything like that was happening I'd leave. That's just silly.

I took it up because the old mods were long gone and no one was dealing with the spam and stuff and I wanted a place students could get help and advice that's useful.

/r/malefashionadvice gets this constantly. I hang out on the /new queue a lot, and I'm never surprised by how many attempts there are to get things through, and how many times a use will resubmit their post. I remember a similar sock company resubmitted 5-10 times in 10 or so minutes because they'd get removed immediately.

Reddit is infested with marketers, this place is an advertising wet dream so naturally people are trying to take advantage of it. Anyone you talk to can be a shill or some bro working for a PR company. Drink Pepto Bismol if you got the shits.

Tell us if you start seeing ads for Pepto Bismol

Given that many of the people talking about shills are nutjobs, it's not taken very seriously.

I wonder if some of the good ole fashioned repost content is used to thin out other artificially boosted content if it gets to dense on the front page. Not sure if that makes sense.

As someone simply attempting to browse reddit while enjoy their delicious McDonald's hamburger I have to disagree with this comment. I find reddit to be as free of paid content as McDonald's tasty fries are of saturated fats. Unrelated, but did you know McDonald's founder was a cat lover? Anyway, reddit on fellow interweb friends who definitely aren't being paid to post!

It has been more than confirmed that the DNC bought good publicity in the last US elections. Same for companies. Reddit is for sale.

[–]Works_of_memercy [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

Wait, was it socksoff.co or socksoff.com? Because the former is a suspended domain, while the latter is one of the favorite shitposting memes on /r/drama. I'm half believing that the whole thing is actually a snafu by one of the more mischievous people from there.

This is what happens when you hire an advertising agency that doesn't know dick about advertising on Reddit, but wants to reach todays youth.

They say that any advertising is good advertising.

[–]tdogredmanBlack knight [スコア非表示]  (1子コメント)

Tell me one person who stopped drinking Pepsi because of that shitty advertisement. It got people talking about it, and that's all adverts want. You know all those memes about shitty ads? Thats free advertising for those companies. I can't claim to understand how advertising works because it sure as hell doesn't work on me, but I don't think that had any negative effect on them.

Because this is being talked about.

There seems to be quite a few Australian companies using bots to promote their companies, or using SEO companies that use bots.

I'm a mod over at /r/blind and we quite often get bots advertising window blinds, 99% from Australia in the Melbourne & Sydney areas (where Sockoff is based).

I always wonsered who these kind of blatant advertising campaigns were meant to appeal to.

I can only assume that they're for hipsters who like this kind of wink-wink-nudge-nudge style and buy them 'ironically'

[–]Fawnet [
