Thank you for this. Lol that second post though.

He should be fired for how obviously he bottled it. Couldn't even space it out to seem plausible, he just dumped all the upvotes on instantly.

He just straight up bottled it

I'm not sure what that means; will you explain it to me?

They bought upvotes and had them all happen right away instead of steadily making the post rise to gain traction the normal way.

In the UK we say "bottled it" to describe a moment of panic.

So like if someone runs from a fight "he bottled it"

So this basically proves reddit sells upvotes to corporate interests, right?

Reddit itself doesn't, but there are multiple third-party sites that allow you to.

Reddit itself doesn't

That hasn't been confirmed

yea so what would you need for confirmation? A signed document saying that they Don't sell upvotes? A whistleblower coming out and going "They're not doing it, i cant take it anymore so im coming out to set the record straight no matter the consequences!" ?
Ie, You kinda dumb

Reddit doesn't but the site is easily gamed by simple bots.

Thankfully, the good bots on reddit are great for the community. An open, easy to use API is one of reddits major strengths.

hey man, cool it with the ableist labels on our bot brethren.

No. Given that they ban accounts and communities if they detect bots voting, and the whole reason for shadow banning, I'd say reddit really doesn't like it.

yah cause it competes with their business of preferential treatment through the algorithm

Post #2 will literally make you lol!

He was right though. And I'd missed it the first time round.

This is easily the most HailCorporate post I've ever seen.

This is the only actual corporate shill bot-upvoted "HailCorporate" post I've ever seen.

If you think this is the only post you are gravely mistaken. Most companies that do this tend to hide their adverts as "Look at this cool video!" or "Wow, look what $COMPANY did for me!"

A simple video or even a picture can go a long way to get some people to buy a product simply because they're reminded of its existence. Same thing goes with fake good will.

I remember seeing posts on the front page nearly daily that would read something like "Check out this AMAZING video I got with my Go Pro™ HD camera!" I thought it was incredibly obvious, but people ate it up.

I mean, are they shills if they don't actually say anything? They just upvoted the post, and the post itself was a clear, direct advertisement. I'd just say that it's just a plain ad.

This is the distribution of Commenters' account ages on this post. with mean: 1213.18 days and standard deviation: 811.08 days

Generate this for any post by commenting /u/account_age_bot

But weren't most of the commenters on the post derisive of it?

How about the average age of accounts giving positive responses to the post?

And now I know about SockOff only thanks to /u/Yeezy42069. Working as intended.

I now know SockOff as a weird scam that marks up socks and then tries to attract attention by yelling "but they are 50% off!" I'm pretty likely to remember that if I ever see that name again.

If you haven't already, I highly recommend you watch Reddit For Sale

That post was a perfect example how not to advertise on reddit. Whatever that company paid for that, they got ripped off. Whoever did that could have posted it on /r/frugalmalefashion, applied their bought upvotes to that thread, and nobody would have suspected a thing. It would have looked organic.

Instead, it looks like the sock company chose an ad company that doesn't know dick about how reddit works.

Frugal

13 dolaritoos for socks, 6,5 with the lowering

wut.

What types of posts are allowed?

Deals (markdowns, sales, price slashes, special offers, coupons, price promotions), discussions, reviews (text+Imgur).

About Frugality

If you don't think something is frugal, don't buy it; everyone's definition of frugal is different.

Do not post saying something isn't frugal. It may be to other people and these posts achieve nothing while adding zero value to the subreddit.

This rule includes "How is this frugal?" type posts

It would fit the subreddit fine. Just because you think $13 ($6.50 on sale) is expensive, doesn't mean it wouldn't belong in the sub.

And from someone who use to buy 7 pairs of Fruit of the Loom briefs for $15, and now spends $20 on a single pair of high quality briefs, don't automatically discredit 'expensive' undergarments. I'd be open to a $6.50 pair of socks, of they were worth it.

I've seen this link there multiple times, they're aliexpress socks, and I report it every time

Was just about to ask the same thing. Apparently he's been on Reddit since 1969

Epoch time. Just means his creation date is set to 0 after the epoch.

This is the correct answer! AlienBlue displays creation dates as 0 unix time translated to years until it actually loads the data as well.

Back in the good days of Reddit I tell you what

Hey it's me!

AMA, participated in the sock puppet sock post, had a comment removed.

Edit: I was the second person to comment on it. Found it 200 or so posts down all, with 500 karma.

Edit: AMA over. Fell asleep after masturbating into my $13 sockoff sock.

0 karma and a 47 year old account? Why does this appear? I've seen it before on somebody else's account as well.

What is this sub?? None of the other posts have even 100 upvotes, none of them are about socks, and they're all less than two hours old

It's a subreddit just for the company. All the posts are because after it hit the frontpage of r/all everyone decided to troll it since they obviously bought those upvotes

The sub was literally created to advertise. It was created just a couple of hours ago. So there's no way it could've achieved that many upvotes on any post.

But it's been banned thankfully.

The rapid deterioration of the sub itself is glorious.

I'm enjoying it so much, even if it does basically confirm the buying of up votes...

I hope you guys realize that this post is basically going to give incredible visibility to the subreddit, which otherwise seems to have 12 subscribers. Someone out there is going to become aware of and enticed by this deal just due to the visibility.

The irony tastes quite ferrous today.

I'm actually going to make fun of the irony by posting my own little "ad" here: I invite you all to join r/FreeCompliments. Escape the negativity a bit and see some comments that will inspire you to be a better you. :)

This is, to me, the central and most beautiful irony of this subreddit. It's based on literally cross-posting other threads thus increasing eyeball exposure.

Side note, this is the first time I can recall seeing a comment from you that wasn't super-positive in tone.

Exactly! It tickles me silly. :D

And man, I've had plenty of negative comments --- here, I'll point you to one I had just 2-3 days ago. I'm still a flawed human, after all.

I'm getting a little meta here, but not being positive 100% of the time doesn't make you flawed. Being positive towards everything is artificial and unrealistic. Sometimes shit happens and/or you gotta be real, and you just can't sugarcoat it. Being positive for the sake of being positive is then just artificial. Basically, don't beat yourself up over feeling down every once in a while.

Just like r/wholesomememes. Compare that to r/2meirl4meirl and an actual depressed person might like the latter sub just because of the fact that people there are real.

But I will say this, if you ask for help on r/2meirl4meirl, you'll definitely get some.

Memes can help us sometimes.

Isnt it better though that more people see it as the actual ad that it is, informing people of the fact that reddit does function as an ad platform, rather then thinking "wow look at these socks, my peers on /r/all seem to love them!"?

Bingo. As exposure and as education are different things even though you can broadly lump them both under the bigger category of "things you can see with your eyes".

Absolutely amazing the amount of people that will rail against the idea that reddit (and our precious admins) could be so sleazy.

Ok, a very large percentage of those are going to be paid shills, maybe even a contrary troll now and then, but it seems there are a large number of visitors here that are still completely unaware of the psychological offensive aimed against them from unscrupulous, shady companies and political groups (with full admin cooperation).

This sub provides a valuable ocular wool removal service.

I can't tell where meta stops anymore.

The mod of that sub also posted his own link to bestof here:

https://np.reddit.com/r/bestof/comments/6ezb35/a_kind_redditor_offers_half_price_socks/

A moderator over on bestof sticked this comment:

When this was removed it was at about 600 upvotes. Now it's at almost a thousand.

HMM...

It's now at 1.5k upvotes over there (but still removed)

I love how he doesn't even try to make it seem genuine. It's so blatant it's funny.

After I saw autob posted his own shit to bestof I had to check and make sure he didn't submit this thread too.

576 upvotes in 40 min? WTF is this getting botted too?

Using r/HailCorporate to advertise. Bold move.

Dude, the sub has only existed for an hour. It's hella botted.

He means that this /r/HailCorporate thread is also getting botted up. It seems bold, but it's possible given that the spammer pulled their shit in /r/bestof too.

Yeah it has somewhat of a sinister undertone to it. This was on my front page and I clicked on it, because it's very rare that I get anything from r/hailcorporate there. Then it takes me to a post with over 1k upvotes and 22 subcrivers, to a 2 HOUR OLD community? I have a subreddit with over 1k subscribers and no post is even over 50.

This is fishy.

Oh. I misread. Well, this hit /r/all pretty fast. Which is how I found this hailcorporate post. So this is probably natural.

Can confirm, this was only a few pages down in r/popular. I saw, I clicked, I chuckled, i updooted

When I commented about 576 upvotes in 40 min this only had 7 comments. Definitely not natural. I'm actually pretty impressed at the levels of meta taken in this ad campaign.

It's not bold. It's the logical conclusion of fabricated engagement. Traction counts no matter where it comes from.

Which is too bad because educating people about advertising tactics by spotlighting the events is actually really valuable.

I mean, it's not so much bold as it is easy pickings. A lot of businesses want subreddits like this to exist and get popular. More publicity when they do very obvious upvote purchases.

OP also posted the link of his own post to /r/bestof and got over 1.1k upvotes in 30 minutes, but it was removed after 14 minutes with 670. The subreddit in question (sockoff) has 7 subs, over 3000 online, and 2000 on the post linked through the one you're looking at right now.

Pretty sure that post of his breaks rule 5. Can't wait to see the fallout from that!

The fallout was 2.5k upvotes.

Someone needs to open an investigation. There's so much foul play here that I can almost smell it.

https://www.reddit.com/wiki/selfpromotion

The Juicy bits:

Don't use sockpuppets to promote your content on reddit. It's tacky and cheap, and detracts from your brand. Additionally, it can get your domain or brand banned from reddit, and these things have a tendency to go viral and create a backlash against you. Be authentic and honest and things will go much better for you.

Or sockoff puppets...

I like that that op also submitted it to r/bestof

Apparently according to the comment of /u/GodOfAtheism it had been removed at 600 upvotes and yet it just keeps getting more and more upvotes (apparently at ~1300 right now).

It's at ~1970 20 minutes after your comment.

How much do you think sockoff paid for that 7 year old account?

so uh... exactly how much are 7 year old accounts going for these days?

It depends on how much karma they have. 50k link and 160k comment karma can go for as much as $400

damn only 3.5 years to go

50k link and 160k comment karma can go for as much as $400

I'm sorry, but I can't believe that's true.

Think about how much credibility comes from an account with that much karma.

How is this possible http://imgur.com/a/yUXbw

It may be a bug because the user account has been suspended.

The time (in computer time) the account was created was probably set to a negative number somehow. Computers keep time by counting seconds since 00:00:00 1/1/1970, so if it was set to -1 for example it would be 23:59:59 12/31/1969. Probably a bug in the app that appeared because the account was suspended as my fellow commenter said.

A totally new sub called r/sockoff had a post about 50 percent off socks on their website and it got around 2000 upvotes. Got brigaded with a ton of shitposts then it got taken down a few minutes ago, it was hilarious

And the OP, which was some strange 7 year old account was defending the product and post with poor English.

[–]ask_about_my_hentai 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (0子コメント)

It wasn't banned because Reddit cares about people buying votes and/or otherwise manipulating their system, it was banned because Reddit wasn't getting a cut. If Reddit actually cared about stopping vote manipulation, Gallowboob would have gone the way of Quickmeme ages ago.

I love that this happened because it confirmed everything that's been going on with the political posts on Reddit lately. A 7 year old account posts an obvious advertisement that is bot upvoted thousands of times to the front page. It's the same shit that's going on with the political posts, except for the mods let those people do it. Also shows that the age of the account you suspect to be shilling means nothing.
