my opinion is that breastfeeding and breastmilk pumping should be socially acceptable anywhere and at any time

if men get to take off their shirts because it’s hot out women get to take off their shirts to feed children

slatestarscratchpad

Everyone always says this, but is it really acceptable for men to be shirtless in public other than at the beach?

I feel like if a shirtless guy walked down Main Street where I live, people would call the police pretty quickly.

…gosh, places are So Different

we have a Naked Bike Guy around here. he bikes around, naked. we consider him local color.

people would call the police on a shirtless guy???

extrakatamiba

Do you live in a relatively hot climate? (My theory is that there’s a strong direct correlation between social acceptability of shirtless men and how hot the local climate is. I know Scott is in a relatively cool climate.)

ebenwert

In Germany, you occasionally see shirtless guys when it’s warm. In the park there might also be topless women, but typically they will only be that way while tanning and put something on when walking around.

In the Philippines, I can’t remember seeing anybody topless aside from beaches. Instead, men will sometimes flip up their T-Shirts to expose their belly for cooling off.

Donating a kidney makes you look like a hero. Donating three kidneys makes you look suspicious.

bloomsneet

Donating over 10,000 kidneys makes you look irrelevant

ebenwert

the average kidney donor donates one kidney in their life. but actually this is just a statistical error. the average donor donates 0 kidneys. kidneys georg, who lives in a hospital & donates over 10000 kidneys a day is an outlier and should not have been counted.

Speaking of the FDA, according to rumor Trump is considering Jim O'Neill as FDA director. He’s apparently a colleague of Peter Thiel’s at Mithril Capital, and he’s on the board of the Seasteading Institute.

I am Facebook friends with a Jim O'Neill. I can’t remember how I became friends with him, but I used to get a lot of friend requests from people I don’t know who I assume are blog readers, and I would mostly accept. He talks about Mithril Capital and seasteading on his timeline. I think it is the same guy.

He’s posted a couple of papers by MIRI and is also friends with Eliezer, Anna Salamon, Mike Vassar, Alyssa Vance, Julia Galef, Will Eden, etc.

His picture on LinkedIn confirms it is the same guy.

Anonymous asked:

Would patients be so quick to choose SSRIs over exercise if they knew about the side effects? "You can try this SSRI, which has a ~50% chance of decreasing your ability to enjoy sex, in some cases long after you stop taking it. Or, you can try jogging for 30 minutes, 3 times a week, and if that doesn't work we can always switch you to the SSRI." Do you see any downsides to using exercise as a first-line therapy in mild-to-moderate depression?

slatestarscratchpad answered:

I’ve been surprised how little people care about SSRI side effects. I try to explain them pretty well before I give anyone the medicines, and I’ve almost never had somebody say “Oh, then I don’t want them.”

Depressed people not only have motivation problems making it hard for them to exercise, but a lot of the time they have chronic pain, they’re very busy, or they’re just old. And a lot of them are exercising already.

Usually when people have made it all the way to a psychiatrist (who is usually at least their second point of call, after their PCP) if they were going to try exercise they would have.

ebenwert

Interesting, my psychiatrist just gave me a prescription for sertraline without much mention of side effects. After reading them, I was sceptical and read your post on SSRIs and saw the mention of bupropion, which I suggested and it turned out to be a really good choice because of underlying ADHD. So thanks for that.

The guy in the red went on to explain that he fully understands the suffering of the lower classes in 18th century France.

The guy in blue went on to explain for twelve hours about the difference between water and fire JUST to make sure everyone was aware.

The thing this comic tries to correct is one of my pet peeves.

I’ve been thinking a lot about it and this is literally the best title of anything

cumaeansibyl

so I guess it was some ancient Greek who said “truth lives at the bottom of a well” and I don’t know what he meant or why it stuck, but I’ve seen a lot of 19th-century references to it (because people always love showing off how much they know about stuff)

but I like this because imagine how fucking pissed off you would be if you lived at the bottom of a well in the first place, but then you had to climb all the way out of it somehow because humans were such unbelievable assholes that you were forced to yell at them in person

I want to turn this into a meme, so that every time somebody spreads a terrible study or something I can just post the picture and they’ll know what I mean.
