This is our opinion of this entire story.

While normal people were enjoying the 4th of July, and while Nikki Haley was Having A Upset because she had to do foreign policy work on the holiday, CNN got involved in a kerfuffle with literally the biggest losers in the entire country. We hate to give this attention, because the story starts with a thing Donald Trump tweeted, which is so boring at this point. On Sunday, America rolled its eyes upon learning OrangeFace McSad had tweeted a doctored video of himself body-slamming CNN. When America’s brother texted it to America, America responded, “I don’t care, fuck him. I have to go to the grocery store now, because I’m making this really badass potato salad for the 4th and you should be jealous.”

But alas, that was not the end of the story. It seems the video Trump tweeted was partially made by a person on Reddit who goes by HanAssholeSolo, and groups like the Anti-Defamation League dug deep into the poster’s private life, by clicking on his username and looking at what else he posts on Reddit. Surprise, he’s a loser racist anti-Semite who loves Donald Trump. We never would have guessed. Shockingly, the ADL and others (like CNN) weren’t cool with this Reddit person who, on top of his other bigotries and racisms, posts pictures of CNN journalists with the Star of David next to them, because HEY YOU GET IT? JEWS.

So CNN figured out who the guy was and tried to get in touch on Monday. The dude posted a LONG apology on Reddit on Tuesday (which has now been deleted), explaining that he’s not actually a person who hates Jews, he’s just a loser who plays that kind of person on Reddit. He even specifically said he doesn’t think CNN journalists should get beaten up, and encouraged other internet losers to think about their actions.

The dude ended up calling CNN after his apology and essentially said, “Yes you figured out who I am and I’m sorry. Can you please not tell everybody my name?” CNN responded:

CNN is not publishing “HanA**holeSolo’s” name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.

CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.

Story over, right? Everybody went and watched fireworks and put grilled sausages in their throats and a good time was had by all? Pfffffft, of course not, because did you not see right there where CNN literally threatened to murder that guy and his entire family? He’s only 15, after all, according to the allegedly human life-form that was created the first time one of Donald Trump’s slow swimmers managed to, against all odds, fertilize an egg:

Wow, that would be really dickish if CNN was doing the Holocaust to an anti-Semitic Reddit loser by NOT doxxing him, especially if he’s 15! SPOILER, Donald Trump Jr. is just fucking lying, like his daddy does. Here’s CNN’s statement:

Ah, an adult male! In fact, according to CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski, dude is “middle aged,” and according to dude himself on Reddit, he is 37. It appears Baby Trump got his #FakeNews from “alt-right” Pizzagate dork Jack Posobiec, who swears up and down that not only is the poster 15 years old, but he is also an LGBT for Trump. Who you gonna believe, huh? CNN or a dude who believes Hillary Clinton does Pizzagate to kids in a basement that doesn’t exist?

Now, there’s a Twitter hashtag about #CNNBlackmail, because don’t you see how CNN is BLACKMAILING this teenage gay Trump loser adult male loser, by saying if dude starts posting anti-Semitic hate-inciting shit about them again, the network “reserves the right” to publish his name? Unfair! As Kaczynski again clarifies, the point of that line wasn’t a threat, but just to say CNN “made no agreement [with] the man about his identity.”

As you can imagine, every whiny ass titty baby snowflake wingnut on Twitter with a blue checkmark is bellyaching about how they are victims now. Dana Loesch, that brilliant jackass, actually tweeted, “First they came for the memes,” which is hilarious (in the not funny way) because it’s a play on the Holocaust prayer and this anonymous Reddit dude has a history of promoting anti-Semitism. HA HA!

Mike Cernovich, the most famous cuck on all of Twitter (he and his people like to be called “cucks,” right? are we using that word correctly?), is whining about CNN going after private citizens, and the Daily Caller is having an OH MY STARS-gasm in its safe space. Nazi losers at the Daily Stormer are threatening to dox CNN employees’ families, in retaliation for the network not actually doxxing the Reddit troll. Even noted asshole Senator Ted Cruz is bitching about how CNN did “extortion.”

For the full loser fucking crybaby confluence, we return to loser fucking crybaby Donald Trump Jr.:

Junior is tweeting links to Jim Hoft, the Stupidest Man On The Internet, who is quoting anti-American Russian intelligence asset Julian Assange, who was hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy from a rape investigation until Sweden dropped it for some reason. (He’s still hiding there.)

Goddammit, the internet is stupid sometimes. Everybody in this story needs to fucking throw their computers out the window and go outside and play and breathe in the fresh air, like normal people do. Go for a walk. Make a friend. GET A LIFE. Or you can make badass potato salad. We are still perfecting our version, so the magic we are adding is TOP SECRET CLASSIFIED still, but it is Holy Trinity potato salad and the recipe we are using as a departure point is RIGHT HERE.

This morning I heard (and watched) a CNN interview with the iron worker running against Paul Ryan. It was so bad it was embarrassing. They refused to take this gentleman seriously, asked him very stupid questions, and finished by complimenting him on his mustache.

What a pathetic collection of losers! No wonder President Trump can’t stand them.

Now I’ve got to send this gentleman a fifty dollar political campaign contribution just to feel better.

    • BigCSouthside

To be fair, one of the reasons he’s gained political traction is because he’s called “IronStache”

      • TundraGrifter

I do appreciate the information – but I don’t think it’s a necessary topic for his “interview” by CNN. They came across like children. I was watching by myself and it was still embarrassing.

      WINNING!!!

    • Oblios_Cap

      Kids today!

  • C4TWOMAN

The thing that stands out from this fiasco is the Alt-right is demanding to never, ever, ever be held responsible for anything, ever. If Trump could get away with it, he’d label anything Mueller, Comey and the FBI are doing in the investigation “blackmail”.

Now a normal person, on hearing, “Okay we’ll let you go, provided you never do this again!” thinks, “Whew! That was close! I knew that was out of line and I better mind myself and stop this shit!”

Not right reactionaries. They have a pathological feeling of being entitled to “get away” with stuff under a delusional idea “freedom” means doing what ever they want, damn the consequences.

This is why we’re seeing such a pushback, imho. It’s not dissimilar to a small child throwing a tantrum, hoping the parent will be hesitant to set boundaries in future.

    • Vincent Ricola

I can’t even follow their “NOT MY FAULT NEVER MY FAULT” line of reasoning. If they dox a 12-year-old girl for beating them in Call of Duty – resulting in death/rape threats to her, her family, her friends, and her pets – it’s somehow noble. If a journalist reports the name of an adult person who is the main focus of an unflattering story, it’s blackmail. What even the fuck?

      • C4TWOMAN

        I think it’s a tactic, kinda a terrorism tactic:
If every time one of theirs is caught and they can make it hell for the messenger exposing them, they think less people will expose/criticize them.
All about terrorising people and control. Imho.

      • DT

No, if a reporter DOESN’T report the name of an adult racist troll who directly threatens those reporters to “unwind”, THAT’S blackmail.

        • Vincent Ricola

          * brain melting *

        • msanthrope

I think that’s what Doug and Dinsdale called “The Other Operation.”

  • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

Long and short of it, in other words, is that most people who troll online are cowards who want to be able to say whatever they want but not have to deal with the consequences. That’s why “doxxing” has such a hypnotic, terrifying quality to people on Reddit, 4chan, and other such cesspits: it’s not that they’re afraid for their Social Security or afraid of death threats, they’re afraid people around them will finally see them for what they are.

  • Ms.MLG on Maui

I am also 37, and as much as I hate to cut off avenues to convenient excuses to use when I behave poorly, 37 is old enough to damn well know actions have consequences.

      • Ms.MLG on Maui

I knew hating other groups of people was bad when I was a small child. You wouldn’t have caught my 15 years old self doing anything like this, much less at 37.

      • C4TWOMAN

Hell, even my 13 year old self “cannot even”… and that was years before that meme existed.

    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

I like how the guy described it as him playing a character, like it wasn’t actually him. Dude, if your primary hobby is roleplaying as a troll who gets off on the misery of others, it might be time to accept that that person is the real you. It’s your daylight life that’s the act.

      • Ms.MLG on Maui

Exactly. Alex Jones tried the same thing in court. It’s a character! No…it’s YOUR character. It’s you.

        • Covfefe

When it comes time for sentencing, some of them like to say they never would have done it if they weren’t drunk. It’s all demon rum’s fault.

          • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

I’ve always felt like booze exists as a universal scapegoat, that we all accept because one day we’ll use it ourselves. Instead of the truth, which is it just strips off our inhibitions. Alcohol never created a desire that wasn’t already there.

Mel Gibson isn’t a raging antisemite because he drinks. He’s a raging antisemite, that drinks.

      • Kiri the Unicorn

The guy who roleplays as a unicorn concurs.

    • clubseal

They know that there are consequences – they’d just prefer that they never have to face any, forever and ever, amen.

The sad and yet believable part is that they always identify with the “party of personal responsibility.”

  • Gayer Than Thou

So I read some of Stormfront’s ultimatum (thanks, Joy Reid!). They have given CNN a week to do something and, if not, then they’ll start doxxing CNN employees. The irony, it seems to me, is that a doxxing war is not one they particularly want because I think (or at least hope) that there are still places and professions where being outed as a racist troll is not considered a resume builder.

    • Vincent Ricola

How are they going to dox CNN employees? Tell us that Jake Tapper is really a man named Jake Tapper?

      • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

In this instance, post their address, phone number, email address, stuff like that. i.e. A true doxxing, not just revealing that someone is a shitposter who lives to make others lives miserable.

  • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

I was very disappointed to see no one looked up Sec. 135.60 – true to idiotic form, they didn’t mention WHOSE section. Apparently it’s NY Penal Code on coercion.

I don’t know the case law, but this bit is probably what Assange is referring to (and a bit troubling to be honest):

“A person is guilty of coercion in the second degree when he or she compels or induces a person to engage in conduct which the latter has a legal right to abstain from engaging in, or to abstain from engaging in conduct in which he or she has a legal right to engage…if the demand is not complied with, the actor or another will:

    5. Expose a secret or publicize an asserted fact, whether true or false, tending to subject some person to hatred, contempt or ridicule;  or

    • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

and then this one (although this at least as an intent element here):
“Perform any other act which would not in itself materially benefit the actor but which is calculated to harm another person materially with respect to his or her health, safety, business, calling, career, financial condition, reputation or personal relationships.

      • I do not understand how saying they are not releasing someone’s personal information is in any way shape or form coercion. Especially when they apologized, not for the stupid CNN meme so much, but it was the vile racist shit they were spewing that they were REALLY worried people would not understand.

        • ariel_gee_398

Well, when you start with the assumption that everyone involved is either a disingenuous slimeball or a certified idiot, it’s easier to understand.

        • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

eh, that’s the thing I’ve learned about law…since I started learning about law.

          1) The more you learn, the more you realize how little you know about it.
          2) The public doesn’t know DICK about how law works. (See Second Amendment Nuts, “Freeze Peach!1!” wackos, and sov cits.)

It’s really really easy to look at words and construct your own argument, especially KNOWING 95% of people won’t look up the citation.

true, that’s how I perserved to get my real estate license. “I know so many dummies who passed this!”

But my LSAT score is 80% percentile, passable to get into a passable school, but I need a scholarship. (And I’d like to go to a great school).

          • msanthropesmr

I got a 167, 94% on my first try. You just need to do every GODDam practice test you can find.

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

I did! And got the EXACT same score on two tests.

Some people just aren’t made for that test. (Also, I was NOT taking very good care of myself at the time, I’m trying to change! Maybe I’ll take it again someday!)

          • msanthropesmr

I’d give you my score since I didn’t end up going. I got a PhD in edumacation policy instead.

        • Dude. The LSAT is just a reading comprehension test

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

            it is not!
Those damn games kick my ass and the logic questions are tricky.

The HARDEST part is doing all that logic-ing in such a short time. If you had an extra hour in total, the thing would be MUCH easier.

          • cmd resistor

I still remember (vaguely) some logic question that involved rows or black and white marigolds on Uranus. I consider myself a logical person but I never learned to do those logic questions. A and B sitting on the train, across from C and or D and who has the sandwich.

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

there’s a method (or rather methods) to it…I learned a lot from the first time I tried one, but the time crunch made me panic.

          • cmd resistor

I always figured there was a method but never did learn what it was.

          • msanthropesmr

Have you taken it? I would say it’s more of a logic test.

          • Did some practice ones…but got bored half way through my BA.

          • Crank Tango

Did they get rid of the awesome mind puzzles?

            nope, still confounding me.

          • cmd resistor

            Those were the worst.

          • Crank Tango

I never ended up taking the LSAT, but I found that practicing for them really helped me for the ones on the GRE.

          • cmd resistor

Don’t both of those have those really long reading comprehension questions?

    • Gayer Than Thou

Good luck making that case stick on these facts.

      • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

I mean, you *could* argue it, but I imagine a journalistic outfit would win easily on 1st Amendment grounds.

And on 3rd reading…I think you’re right about this part: “compels or induces a person…” and “engage in conduct” or “abstain from engaging in conduct.”

    • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

Maybe I’m missing a piece, but how does New York penal law apply to CNN, which is a company based in Georgia? Are they claiming the “victim” is a resident of the state of New York (something that CNN does not assert)?

      • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

        CNN broadcasting out of NY?

I really don’t know on that one.

          Sec. 135.60
          looks VERY official

          • tomamitai

Someone holed-up in a foreign embassy to avoid being tried for violating the law himself shouldn’t be giving free legal advice on Twitter.

        • Spotts1701, Resistance Pilot

Maybe if the reporter who was doing the work was based there, sure.
          I’m probably overthinking this.

    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

Admittedly, it’s kind of weird that CNN took over as the guarantor of some rando’s good behavior and rather stupid of them to publicly admit to it. That said, it’d be iffy to say that simply reporting a person’s identity is exposing a secret when they’ve already made a statement of a public nature, though they’ve certainly opened themselves up to someone giving it a try. And as others have pointed out, we have no idea whose law would apply here.

You might be on to something, Something groups of these grifters are more offended when a legit organization/person discovers something they’d prefer to remain secret and it’s used exactly like this:
“Stop this shit and I won’t tell”.

But these people hate being beholden almost more than they hate being found out. So, provided its not their personal ass on the line, they’ll happily expose a compatriot so the “evil MSM NWO Jews Blahs and Gey shills” don’t look like they’ve pulled one over on them.

  • Lizzietish81

OT, but I’m going to be a white American for a minute.

I need a job. So when I get a call I look at the phone and pray that the person on the other end isn’t a scam and will actually leave a message. You may think this is silly, but last week I got two calls from a +7 number, which I found out to be in Kazakhstan. So yes I probably should answer, but otoh I shouldn’t because who knows what horrors I will get myself into.

So when I get a message, I am excited. Giddy even.

Until I listen to the message and can’t understand a word being said because the person on the other end is speaking with an accent. This makes me feel terrible, but heavy accents and other languages sound like gibberish to me especially over the phone. And then when the other person is mumbling, I have no idea what’s being said. I heard the word Opportunity and GIS, that’s it.

I rail against the SPEAK AMERICAN crowd, so it pains me to feel this way.

    • BigCSouthside

Call back, say you didn’t hear the message

    • Ms.MLG on Maui

It’s totally normal to want to clearly understand a person you are trying to have an important discussion with. Language barriers are a real thing. I sometimes have to repeat myself here because my accent confuses people. Sometimes people have to repeat themselves for me because I can’t understand their accents, and there are many different accents here. You don’t feel that your way of communication is inherently superior, and wanting to understand and be understood is normal as fuck.

      • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

        this ^

You were frustrated about a garbled communication regarding a high-stress topic.

You WERE NOT hating on people of other countries by pure virtue of the way they speak.

FWIW, I feel this way about people from Kentucky and Tennessee too, so there ya go.
        ; )

        • Ms.MLG on Maui

I am from Tennessee. Good thing you only have to read my words! I could start typing them like I say them, confuse the hell out of you!

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

lol…dammit, foot in mouth. EVERY. TIME.
To be fair, the only experience I had was with a buddy from Tenn. in Miami. He was on speakerphone one day with a buddy of his from back home…I understood literally 3 words out of that dude’s mouth.

          • Ms.MLG on Maui

Everytime I open my mouth in public here, everyone within earshot is like, WHERE are YOU from? Where in the south are you from? Are you from Georgia? I have an Aunt in Texas and she calls everyone honey, are you from Texas? 20 years from now, people will be asking where I live, and looking shocked when I say, right up the street!

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

people never know where I’m from, cause i’ve picked up little bits of accents and slang from living all over.

Lot of people in Miami thought I was from Chicago, for some reaosn.

          • elviouslyqueer

Oh honey, Mississippi here. I might as well be from Neptune when I’m trying to make myself understood, even to other Mississippians.

          • Lizzietish81

Haha, back when I did personal ads trying to understand someone from down south was a challenge.

And they couldn’t understand me either. I don’t have a thick Boston accent, but I talk fast, it was a lot of “Whoa, slow down there missy”

    • tomamitai

The worst is when they’re using a low bandwidth voice-over-ip service to make their calls, which can turn a mild accent or speech impediment into something that sounds like Jawaese.

      • therblig

if only you were fluent in over 6 million forms of communication

    • AnnieGetYerFun

I consider myself to be pretty good at accents (I can imitate a few of them well, and usually sound like a fluent speaker of whatever foreign phrase I am uttering, unless it’s Gaelic because that shit is weird). My grandmother and grandfather were from Slavic countries, and my step-grandfather was Filipino. I am married to someone with an accent honed in India, Germany, and Canada.

Anyway, even I struggle mightily over the phone with foreign accents. So don’t feel bad is my point.

      • shivaskeeper

See my reply. It’s not the listener, it the digital Telecom network.

    • shivaskeeper

It’s not you. It’s the digital communication systems. They carry far more noise on the lines than the old analog systems.

The trade off for going digital is being able to mux more things into a trunk line with less equipment, but with a loss of signal charity. Digital can be compressed easier (which also adds noise) and requires less of a frequency division between signals. Every time your signal is muxed, demuxed, compressed, decompressed, switched to a different format, and etc more noise is added.

If you are old enough to remember the old AT&T hear a pin drop commercials that is the reason the went away. The cleanest digital call is no where near as clean as analog.

  • What? The poor brave brigades of anti-Semites and bigots are a-scared of a little sunlight breaking through their anonymity and laying their hatred out in the open for all to read and judge them on?

    • I am not sure what they are upset about? Dude posts on internet. Posts all sorts of dumb shit. People call him on it. CNN does NOT release his name so people can’t hound him and…..they are somehow the badguys in this?

Well according to them apparently CNN made him stop posting stupid shit.

Can we finally get people to forget this illusion that Assange/Wikileaks is anything more than a propagandist/political operative for trump?

I’d go with “for Putin,” but yeah, that.

He has been pretty much anti American from the get go, but he really became Putin’s bitch a few years ago when he got an influx of Russia money to bail out Wikileaks.

    • TundraGrifter

As well as the media arm of the Russian intelligence services.

    • C4TWOMAN

I suspect the time when Wikileaks stopped being a ego vehicle for Assange among the left and he deliberately got in bed with Putin was about the same time the dazzlepod STRATFOR information was deleted from the web, circa 2015.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012%E2%80%9313_Stratfor_email_leak

By 2015 the dazzlepod website was offline.
      https://web.archive.org/web/20140701000000*/http://dazzlepod.com/stratfor/

A handful of conspiracy grifting websites, including Infowars, were signed up for services…kinda undermining their narrative “agents and shills” in intelligence were “out to get them”. the Infowars account was : 1oldpath@infowars.net

When conspiracy fans found out, there was a meltdown, you can imagine(just search the email).
Now Alex Jones is in the in crowd, the optics would be awkward: is he really a target of the NWO, a “double agent, or just a conman? We of course know the answer…

Anyway, who knows who else was on that list using it to grift people? Most subscribers were students, political researchers or people in the industry, but anyone could sign up. If you traded in conspiracies it could really help “fine tune” your “predictions”.

Not to say Assange wasn’t a sleazbag before this. He was just a grandstanding glory hound who happened to pander to the left and be useful more than not.

falsely or recklessly asserting someone committed a crime publicly could be construed as defamation, no?

      Isn’t law FUN!?!

    • Darrell Imaginarian

Ha I just read this code. There was some question if Trump’s threats to Joe and Mika via exposure in National Enquirer could constitute criminal extortion. And after reading the code, the answer is no, because the blackmailer has to extract something of roughly monetary value. An apology has no value.

      • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

        U.S.C. or NY State Code?
Cause I posted some excerpts of that downthread.

        • Darrell Imaginarian

          NY State Code.

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

huh, I didn’t see that bit, but that’s why I’m not a lawyer!

          • Darrell Imaginarian

I’m not either… I kicked it around with one. That seemed to be the gist of it….so you forced somebody to apologize? When we talk about coersion, people are being forced into sex, they need to pay money, they need to make corrupt decisions as part of their job. Having to apologize in a private setting doesn’t constitute harm.

          • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

Not only that, but I believe coercion is usually centered around forcing someone to do something. It doesn’t say anything about forcing them to do *nothing*, which is what they’re implying (i.e. he shitposts again, he gets outed).

          • Darrell Imaginarian

CNN’s arguments are incredibly stupid. They could say, we aren’t outing him because he’s just some nobody who the President happened to retweet. Making it conditional on his future behavior is asinine. If he was CEO of a midlevel corporation or police sheriff CNN would have doxed him. But their editorial decisions don’t enter anywhere into the criminal realm. They are just a shitty network.

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

well, except it wasn’t conditional on his behavior. He deleted everything and showed remorse and, this is the dumb part by CNN, they said (as if a judge) well since he’s done that, we won’t out him.

          • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

the NY Penal code does. It’s a bit further down.

          • Darrell Imaginarian

Think of the implications of the Assange interpretation. Store security catches a shop lifter, sits them down in the office, photographs them, gives them a warning, and releases them with the promise not to do it again. Quite common. According to Assange, that’s criminal extortion.

          • UnsaltedSinner

So if someone says something embarrassing, and you say: “I’ll tell people you said that if you do it again,” that’s a crime, apparently.

          • Darrell Imaginarian

            Precisely.

    2. cut em up
    3. add, like, some vinegar & oil and shit, maybe some green onions I dunno
    4. start drinkin

    • cmd resistor

I like the old basic potato salad with the mayo and the mustard and I guess it is celery but I cannot make it turn out well. Some people have a gift for that.

      • Lance Thrustwell

The secret is not to over- or under-boil the potatoes. Which I do half the time.

        • cmd resistor

Yeah, I have tried all those various methods — boil in skin, then peel. Peel first. Cut before cooking. Cut after cooking, Put cooked potatoes in vinegar first. But it just comes out either over/under cooked and bland. Probably one of those things you need to practice a lot and I only ever try every other year or so. Now I can do German potato salad ok.

    • MrTusks

Why is number 4 not number 1?

  • SCK

Um, I’m going to have to respectfully and politely disagree with you, Wonkette, my beloved. You’re absolutely correct that the right wing assholes (there goes my politeness, sorry) have taken this way too far and, as always, can go fuck themselves, but… so did CNN in this case. Either dox the guy or don’t dox the guy. This “we reserve the right to not reveal who this jackass is because he’s apologized UNLESS he does it again” is bullshit. CNN, an organization I still have faith in and respect deeply, shouldn’t act like the hall monitor of civility that’s capriciously and ingenuously playing favorites with the cool kids, the jocks, the cheerleaders, the nerds and the weirdos (apologies if I left anyone out, high school was a long time ago).

Does anyone really think they’re going to assign resources to monitor whether this guy acts like a piece of shit again? No. If not, then it’s just a threat, and an empty one at that. If it’s a threat, then it’s really shitty behavior.

    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

I hate to admit it but it’s true. I cringed when I read that last sentence, because it’s CNN overplaying its hand, pure and simple. What the guy did wasn’t illegal, and CNN appointing itself this guy’s Internet Mom (“no more shitposting or you’ll go to your room!”) is ridiculous, idiotic, and verging on illegal, especially with a public threat.

      • SCK

Yeah, I hated to admit it too. If they had just left that one sentence out I’d be defending them vigorously.

        • MrTusks

Yeah, if I was this dude, I’d be reading this as a threat. CNN was better off not investigating this at all. But, CNN has never met a scumbag they haven’t dignified with their time.

    • whitroth

Based on what Evan says, above, it’s not doxxing if, lessee, they click on his pick, and read what he says about himself….

Now, if they’d tracked him down, and found public records with addresses, etc, *that’s* doxxing.

And here’s a thought: why does CNN *not* have the right to respond to attacks? It’s ok for right-wing assholes to respond, but libtards ain’t allowed, or they’re the hypocrites…. (says the snowflake alt-wrong).

      • TX Dept. of Space Tacos

FWIW, CNN says their person took info from comments he made in Reddit and found him on Facebook.

      • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

They have a right to respond, but making his continued anonymity contingent on his future good behavior smacks of a heavy-handed threat. Those sorts of things happen all the time, it’s true, but most people aren’t dumb enough to publicly broadcast that they have damaging information that they’ll release if they step out of line. It’s almost unbelievably stupid.

      • SCK

I stand partially corrected. Maybe it’s not exactly doxxing (doxing? doxes? I’m now stuck on how to conjugate that verb) and they have the right to respond. However, this “don’t do it again or we will respond” is immature bullying.

Now, if they were up for some mature bullying (I’m being sarcastic) then I’d be all for it.

        • Lance Thrustwell

It is weird. And it doesn’t sound like CNN-level professionalism. It sounds like something a junior staffer wrote.

From the Latin: pp: Doxo, Doxare, Doxavi, Docatum: To fuck with someone by removing their anonymity on the Internet.

          • SCK

I thought it would be Doxo, Doxare, Docate, Docatum. Thanks for correcting me!

Laughing… we should alert the Vatican, or whomever keeps track of Latin dictionaries these days.

        • whitroth

Heh. Heh. Heh. You want mature responses, and *actually* digging, go read krebsonsecurity.com for some of the stories he’s *really* dug into (and in a number of cases, really nasty scum have gone to jail for massive computer crime).

They’re slapping CNN around like it’s a Friday night drunk.Eventually the trolls will go away, but they’re annoying AF. Not least because it’s just so goddamned pointless.

    https://www.mediamatters.org/research/2010/03/16/right-wing-media-set-sights-on-family-of-11-yea/161685

Right-wing media have recently targeted 11-year-old Marcelas Owens and his family for attacks after he appeared at a health care reform event to speak about his mother, who reportedly died after losing her health insurance. These attacks follow a history of media conservatives attacking or mocking the uninsured, and previous attacks by right-wing media on the family of a 12-year-old who spoke in support of SCHIP.
