I am pretty sure they are hoping that memes come back as violent or racist and they can then petition special protection for journalists or say "see? All trump supporters are violent racist frogs"

Archived version for when/if CNN decides to remove it and later claim it didn't happen.

BTW, did you know that archiving a website for any reason is "right-wing"? VICE says it is... is this real life?

Vice just removed the ability to archive their site using popular archivers due to people calling them out on their bullshit. Having a historical archive in escrow is the only real power we have to hold them to their accounts, but they're learning to prevent it to protect themselves from judgement. We must find ways around this.

Archive the google cache of the page.

Oh shit fam, thanks! Will spread this technique!

NP. There are other ways but I would suggest finding some on your own (posting those ideas on reddit is not a good idea anymore imo). The goal is to archive as close to the original as possible without editing or falling into the trap of being accused of editing. So saving to your system and uploading to an archive is not something that can be called credible... the reason a screenshot is just not enough proof. I like to use places that they would not want to block, attack or discredit, like googles cache.

They put in the NOCACHE meta tag to their pages as well. This was all done for one very clear, very corrupt and fucked up reason.

I grabbed a random page from vice to see if google cache had it. It's cached but I do see your point, that can be blocked at any time. If you look around on Reddit and "other places" you can find a few methods to work around it other than the cache method.

And the fact that CNN cares this much looks so bad on them. Shouldn't they know how to deal with being made fun of??? By some anonymous person on the internet?? Like if you wanna be outraged be outraged at Trump!!! He's the one who tweeted the thing!!

CNN explains how they found him and it seems like he begged them not to reveal his identity.

The apology came after CNN's KFile identified the man behind "HanAholeSolo." Using identifying information that "HanAholeSolo" posted on Reddit, KFile was able to determine key biographical details, to find the man's name using a Facebook search and ultimately corroborate details he had made available on Reddit.

On Monday, KFile attempted to contact the man by email and phone but he did not respond. On Tuesday, "HanA**holeSolo" posted his apology on the subreddit /The_Donald and deleted all of his other posts.

This guy probably shat himself when he got that message

Reading the dude's apology directly, I almost expected, "I even have a black friend" by the end of it.

When asked specifically about his other posts that consisted of racist, Islamophobic, and anti-Semitic language and imagery, he answered, "I love people of all races, creeds and origins. One of my best friends is a homosexual and one of my best friends is Jewish and one of my best friends is Muslim."

Julian Assange tweeted the relevant law, and I excerpted the applicable language:

NY PEN § 135.60 Coercion in the second degree

A person is guilty of coercion in the second degree when he or she compels or induces a person to ... abstain from engaging in conduct in which he or she has a legal right to engage ... by means of instilling in him or her a fear that, if the demand is not complied with, the actor or another will:

. 5. Expose a secret or publicize an asserted fact, whether true or false, tending to subject some person to hatred, contempt or ridicule; or

. 9. Perform any other act which would not in itself materially benefit the actor but which is calculated to harm another person materially with respect to his or her health, safety, business, calling, career, financial condition, reputation or personal relationships.

CNN is not publishing "HanA**holeSolo's" name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again.

No, you don't publish his name because you are a journalist, not a god damn lynch mob leader. Fuck off with this bullshit.

In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same. CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.

How the fuck is that supposed to be anything but menacing? I genuinely believe the point of this article is primarily to show people on the internet at large that, if CNN wants to, they can and will dedicate whatever amount of time is needed to figure out who you are and harass you. A lot of the people on Trump's side loved it, CNN saw the opportunity to decry it as inciting violence against the press, and decided to put the kid under their thumb to set an example.

Trump retweeting him, and the kid turning out to be a racist isn't even a headline. Did Trump go through and fact check the guy before hand? Trump doesn't even read daily briefs let alone ensuring everyone he retweets is any certain way. I mean, it is kind of a headline once you bring all the facts into the equation but you're creating a separate story than what happened. Factually correct but framed in a slanted way that doesn't exactly scream journalistic integrity.

Hey guys. Just wanted to pop in to say this: if you want CNN to stop doing this, one of the ways you can get them to is to contact their advertisers and tell them why you're not going to watch CNN, or use any of the products or services advertised on CNN. It works. Trust me on this. CNN can potentially lose millions of dollars if you do this right. You can find their advertisers' e-mails and send (polite) letters explaining your future purchasing decisions, write them snail-mail, or potentially even call them. With enough e-mails, phone calls, and correspondence, CNN's advertisers WILL pull from them. If you're lucky, you might even be able to bankrupt CNN like this. This cannot stand. CNN went after a private citizen and if this is allowed, then any news organization will be given free reign to terrorize anyone they like. This could potentially lead to a world where news organizations cherrypick people's family members out on Facebook, and demand a public apology-- coerced through the threat of doxing. And I'm simply not gonna stay silent when something that fucking terrible is on the cusp of happening.

A person is guilty of coercion in the second degree when he or she compels or induces a person to engage in conduct which the latter has a legal right to abstain from engaging in, or to abstain from engaging in conduct in which he or she has a legal right to engage

I.E. "Apologize or we'll reveal your identity"

CNN could have legally published their identity. But they posted on social media that they coerced the user into saying something.

I'm sure the CNN employee who tweeted it could get a class A misdemeanor for it, because it's a criminal complaint and they literally tweeted their complicity for it. Not sure if anything could be filed against CNN itself.

This is a symptom of decaying freedom of speech

Edit: For those who've been blowing up my inbox claiming I'm saying that CNN shouldn't have free speech:

Suppose I made a gif about a person I hardly know. That person doesn't like the gif I made, so they found some indirect means of tracking me down. They also happen to have a massive twitter following, including some people who might take action against me because they love this person so much. That person then says "Don't do it again, or all these people will find out who you really are and I won't be held responsible for what they might do". In my book, that would be considered a form of coercion. Not quite blackmail or extortion because no items are changing hands, but they are doing what they can to leverage this information in an effort to shut me up. This is not benign. The news network is obviously much more powerful than most private citizens.

This is limiting free speech, and we need to continue to be aware of abuses of power on all levels.

Second Edit: I'm not saying they don't have the right to put it out there, but using the information to threaten someone is different than simply putting the information out there. I still wouldn't agree with them doing that, but saying "Don't do X, or else" is where they've crossed the line.

Anybody who doesn't stand up for this kid, regardless of their political affiliation, is encouraging blackmail, coercion, the further destruction of free speech, and this type of thing happening again in the future. Regardless of all else, we need to come together on this and support each other, otherwise it very well may be you or me next in line.

Whether this kid was an anarchist, a communist or a fascist, I'd be standing up for him. This is the lowest behavior I've ever seen.

EDIT: I received a hate comment that was since deleted, but my reply:

"This is the exact fucking thing that I'm talking about. Not once did I lie in my comment, I'm speaking from the heart, but instead of thinking about it critically, you see that I vote Republican and choose to spit in my face and not even try to hear me out. Whether this was Fox News and a communist or Breitbart and an anarchist or CNN and a fascist, I don't fucking care. This is bigger than politics.

Quit acting like a jackass and grow the fuck up. "

As a liberal: Fuck CNN.

Burn you blackmailing assholes.

Even as someone who despises Trump's politics, this is completely fucked. For one thing, the meme is juvenile but completely satirical. Secondly, what the fuck, CNN? Is this really what a "crusader for truth" really does? The poor fucker made a stupid gif. Leave him alone.

What the fuck is this shit? I literally didn't believe it and triple checked the link three times. I genuinely figured America has some sort of April Fools type thing on July 4th that I was unaware of.

A major news company is doxxing a private individual and publicly blackmailing them into changing their behaviour, while seeming proud of this stance?

This might be the oddest 'news' story I've seen in a while. The whole political sphere - on both sides - has become...just...sad. Sad for humanity.

Disgusting and very dangerous to the future of free speech and privacy if it becomes a trend

It's blackmail, but on r/politics it's a "reasonable response to racism"

Can't wait for this post to "magically" disappear like the top posts from the United Airlines incident.

I don't do this kind of stuff, but this is one of the key reasons I never post on Facebook. My Facebook profile is only 33% complete anyway and only available to friends.

Jesus, why is CNN trying to make me agree with Trump

CNN literally going after our memes. This def wont trigger a Streisand effect.

Doxxing is against reddit's global rules. All links to CNN should be blocked by the admins as the only reasonable punishment in this situation.

Fuck CNN. They threaten to doxx somebody just for editing a WWE clip in a humorous way that supports Trump?

I'm not even a Trump supporter, but this is just bullying behavior by a corporate entitity against someone who doesn't have the resources to fight back.

Look folks, for a few minutes you need to put politics aside and look at what is really being said here.

A major news corporation is threatening to expose a person to very real economic and physical harm by publishing the persons identity under the condition that he doesn't say or post anything else that goes against what they want.

That is what we call black mail, just because the individual in question took an old photo and edited it to make their logo appear. Anyone who is advocating this as something positive is either a paid operative or extremely extremely narrow minded.

This is not what a free country and an honest press would tolerate, these are political agendas and they are being forced through by the use of coercion and threats. If you have to threaten or intimidate people to get them to agree with you then you are the baddie.

This guy needs to lawyer up and do it quickly before they ruin his life or someone murders him because in today's political climate people are too immature to handle ideas that conflict with their own.

The fact that CNN spent time and resources to find and "out" this individual isn't about just this one incident. It's a warning shot to anyone else out there who goes against CNN and openly mocks them in media formats.
