Seriously, how do companies as large as CNN not see the Streisand effect coming on decisions like this? Surely there has to be at least one nerd there who will give an "uhh, guys..."

I am pretty sure they are hoping that memes come back as violent or racist and they can then petition special protection for journalists or say "see? All trump supporters are violent racist frogs"

This is so odd. As a private citizen who posted using a relatively anonymous social profile, shouldn't you be entitled to not having your name displayed?

I mean if it was Facebook or Twitter etc. , fair game all your info is there but this is a reddit account. And why does CNN care so much about who made it? Why not criticize the person who used it?

I don't agree with this individual's opinion at all but they should free to express themselves. And yes every right comes with its own set of responsibilities and consequences but are we saying that a potential consequence is public shame even if you're relatively anonymous?

Edit: I misread. He contacted CNN himself and apologised.

I find this weird, too. Why does it matter who made it? It's a stupid meme, and frankly we've all seen much worse. I don't understand why CNN is so pleased with itself for finding the guy and scolding him. Focus on the asshole who tweeted it. They seem to be riding a very fine line between investigating/reporting actual news and totally losing their shit when Trump calls them names or harasses them. Rise above and have some dignity for chrissakes. They're just playing into his hand.

Edit: Ok, I got it. OP also posted a bunch of hateful propaganda in addition to this dumb wrestling GIF. That wasn't clear to me when the story first broke. TL/DR: OP, CNN and Trump are all idiots.

If I were skilled in such internet buffoonery ( i.e. making a funny gif of a CNN logo getting an atomic elbow) I'd have no problem doing it. I'm just confused why someone would be afraid of them. Was it seriously condoning violence? Come on, why do we as a society allow these bullying tactics by any organization?

I can answer that. We allow them because many jobs have the chance to see something like this on social media. Do I want my employer to know all the shit I've posted on Reddit. Fuck no. To be honest if I made that gif and CNN bullied me to apologize or they'd release every story I'd shared anonymously I'd play ball too....

Julian Assange tweeted the relevant law, and I excerpted the applicable language:

NY PEN § 135.60 Coercion in the second degree

A person is guilty of coercion in the second degree when he or she compels or induces a person to ... abstain from engaging in conduct in which he or she has a legal right to engage ... by means of instilling in him or her a fear that, if the demand is not complied with, the actor or another will:

. 5. Expose a secret or publicize an asserted fact, whether true or false, tending to subject some person to hatred, contempt or ridicule; or

. 9. Perform any other act which would not in itself materially benefit the actor but which is calculated to harm another person materially with respect to his or her health, safety, business, calling, career, financial condition, reputation or personal relationships.

CNN explains how they found him and it seems like he begged them not to reveal his identity.

The apology came after CNN's KFile identified the man behind "HanAholeSolo." Using identifying information that "HanAholeSolo" posted on Reddit, KFile was able to determine key biographical details, to find the man's name using a Facebook search and ultimately corroborate details he had made available on Reddit.

On Monday, KFile attempted to contact the man by email and phone but he did not respond. On Tuesday, "HanA**holeSolo" posted his apology on the subreddit /The_Donald and deleted all of his other posts.

This guy probably shat himself when he got that message

Vice just removed the ability to archive their site using popular archivers due to people calling them out on their bullshit. Having a historical archive in escrow is the only real power we have to hold them to their accounts, but they're learning to prevent it to protect themselves from judgement. We must find ways around this.

Archive the google cache of the page.

Oh shit fam, thanks! Will spread this technique!

NP. There are other ways but I would suggest finding some on your own (posting those ideas on reddit is not a good idea anymore imo). The goal is to archive as close to the original as possible without editing or falling into the trap of being accused of editing. So saving to your system and uploading to an archive is not something that can be called credible... the reason a screenshot is just not enough proof. I like to use places that they would not want to block, attack or discredit, like googles cache.

Hey guys. Just wanted to pop in to say this: if you want CNN to stop doing this, one of the ways you can get them to is to contact their advertisers and tell them why you're not going to watch CNN, or use any of the products or services advertised on CNN. It works. Trust me on this. CNN can potentially lose millions of dollars if you do this right. You can find their advertisers' e-mails and send (polite) letters explaining your future purchasing decisions, write them snail-mail, or potentially even call them. With enough e-mails, phone calls, and correspondence, CNN's advertisers WILL pull from them. If you're lucky, you might even be able to bankrupt CNN like this. This cannot stand. CNN went after a private citizen and if this is allowed, then any news organization will be given free reign to terrorize anyone they like. This could potentially lead to a world where news organizations cherrypick people's family members out on Facebook, and demand a public apology-- coerced through the threat of doxing. And I'm simply not gonna stay silent when something that fucking terrible is on the cusp of happening.

Just so we are all understanding this, CNN is threatening to reveal the identity of someone who made a video of Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, added in the CNN logo over the face of Vince McMahon, CEO of the WWE, with Trump not really attacking "CNN" Vince McMahon at Wrestlemania 23 which happened on April 1st, 2007 because they say it advocates violence against the media. IM FUCKING DONE.

The whole "this incites violence against the media" is a complete overreaction. There are actual problems to worry about, and the president being childish and posting a dumb meme isn't one of them.

It's not even a fucking overreaction.

It's like if you bumped a cop's shoulder and he SCREAMED at you 'YOU JUST ASSAULTED A POLICE OFFICER!' and proceeded to pull his weapon on you.

It's not justified by any stretch of the fucking imagination. No thinking, coherent human being would ever jump to that conclusion. Evil Kineval would balk at that colossal divide you have to leap over to get to that conclusion.

It is literally just a news corporation trying to swing their tiny dicks around to get more ratings, and being a fucking petty crybully.

CNN was in the wrong from the very fucking start of this entire event, and are making no effort to be any kind of right.

The only fucking response to Trump's tweet would be a CNN logo photoshopped onto Steve Austin's head as he Stone Cold Stunners Trump and a caption that reads 'This is what we remember'.

Pretending like he was 'inciting violence' against them is a fucking joke.

The gif is obviously a symbolic joke based on Trump supposedly defeating CNN over the Russia narrative. To even pretend its purpose is to incite violence is dishonest and pathetic.

By this logic, the original unedited gif promotes "violence against Vince McMahon"

CNN is not publishing "HanA**holeSolo's" name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again.

No, you don't publish his name because you are a journalist, not a god damn lynch mob leader. Fuck off with this bullshit.

In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same. CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.

How the fuck is that supposed to be anything but menacing? I genuinely believe the point of this article is primarily to show people on the internet at large that, if CNN wants to, they can and will dedicate whatever amount of time is needed to figure out who you are and harass you. A lot of the people on Trump's side loved it, CNN saw the opportunity to decry it as inciting violence against the press, and decided to put the kid under their thumb to set an example.

Trump retweeting him, and the kid turning out to be a racist isn't even a headline. Did Trump go through and fact check the guy before hand? Trump doesn't even read daily briefs let alone ensuring everyone he retweets is any certain way. I mean, it is kind of a headline once you bring all the facts into the equation but you're creating a separate story than what happened. Factually correct but framed in a slanted way that doesn't exactly scream journalistic integrity.

CNN clearly operates under the same out-of-touch senior citizens of every other facet of traditional media.

The fact is, the internet is bigger and more complex than any of them want to admit. It is a society. It has an unspoken moral code.

Doxxing (or threatening to) is an asshole thing to do on the Internet, and CNN have just made themselves the assholes.

Not to mention it's the definition of criminal coercion in New York State.

A person is guilty of coercion in the second degree when he or she compels or induces a person to engage in conduct which the latter has a legal right to abstain from engaging in, or to abstain from engaging in conduct in which he or she has a legal right to engage

I.E. "Apologize or we'll reveal your identity"

CNN could have legally published their identity. But they posted on social media that they coerced the user into saying something.

I'm sure the CNN employee who tweeted it could get a class A misdemeanor for it, because it's a criminal complaint and they literally tweeted their complicity for it. Not sure if anything could be filed against CNN itself.

Hmmm, maybe they should publish a public apology and the names of the employees responsible? If I were a judge, I would find that fitting.

Not once did I lie in my comment, I'm speaking from the heart, but instead of thinking about it critically, you see that I vote Republican and choose to spit in my face and not even try to hear me out. Whether this was Fox News and a communist or Breitbart and an anarchist or CNN and a fascist, I don't fucking care. This is bigger than politics.

Quit acting like a jackass and grow the fuck up. "

As a liberal: Fuck CNN.

Burn you blackmailing assholes.

Even as someone who despises Trump's politics, this is completely fucked. For one thing, the meme is juvenile but completely satirical. Secondly, what the fuck, CNN? Is this really what a "crusader for truth" really does? The poor fucker made a stupid gif. Leave him alone.

Meanwhile, over at /politics and the Huffington Post (and no I will not link to it), CNN are the real victims here because people are very angry at them.

Huffington Post is nothing more than a blogging site like Tumblr in my view.

/r/politics' only thread on it as about how the guy who threatened the redditor is being threatened.

There is a mention of the story on r/politics- defending CNN, of course.

CNN is fucked. You can't win against the Internet. We, the people of Internet, may disagree on many things but privacy is the one thing we agree on 100%.

Has Chris Cuomo said it's illegal to view the .gifs yet?

What the fuck is this shit? I literally didn't believe it and triple checked the link three times. I genuinely figured America has some sort of April Fools type thing on July 4th that I was unaware of.

A major news company is doxxing a private individual and publicly blackmailing them into changing their behaviour, while seeming proud of this stance?

This might be the oddest 'news' story I've seen in a while. The whole political sphere - on both sides - has become...just...sad. Sad for humanity.

Oh CNN..doing this only gives trump more ammo. Good job.

Jesus, why is CNN trying to make me agree with Trump

It's blackmail, but on r/politics it's a "reasonable response to racism"

What in the actual fuck is wrong with CNN?

They couldn't just take it on the chin and move on to credible journalism. Instead, they chose to pursue someone that made a gif? Really?

Doxxing is against reddit's global rules. All links to CNN should be blocked by the admins as the only reasonable punishment in this situation.

This is DISGUSTING.

I can't believe that such a huge media outlet is actually blackmailing a US citizen.

This can't be legal.

Fuck CNN. They threaten to doxx somebody just for editing a WWE clip in a humorous way that supports Trump?

I'm not even a Trump supporter, but this is just bullying behavior by a corporate entitity against someone who doesn't have the resources to fight back.

CNN literally going after our memes. This def wont trigger a Streisand effect.

But I love the freedom that allows them to do it. This person seems fairly young as well. CNN needs to back off.

Look folks, for a few minutes you need to put politics aside and look at what is really being said here.

A major news corporation is threatening to expose a person to very real economic and physical harm by publishing the persons identity under the condition that he doesn't say or post anything else that goes against what they want.

That is what we call black mail, just because the individual in question took an old photo and edited it to make their logo appear. Anyone who is advocating this as something positive is either a paid operative or extremely extremely narrow minded.

This is not what a free country and an honest press would tolerate, these are political agendas and they are being forced through by the use of coercion and threats. If you have to threaten or intimidate people to get them to agree with you then you are the baddie.

This guy needs to lawyer up and do it quickly before they ruin his life or someone murders him because in today's political climate people are too immature to handle ideas that conflict with their own.

The fact that CNN spent time and resources to find and "out" this individual isn't about just this one incident. It's a warning shot to anyone else out there who goes against CNN and openly mocks them in media formats.

Whether or not you like Trump, CNN has gone too far. Doxxing and blackmailing somebody because they used your logo in a harmless GIF is ridiculous. This is a crime and the person responsible should be punished as both offences are punishable by imprisonment. This is not how a new coporation should behave.

They're essentially blackmailing someone for posting a meme of them that they didn't like. I thought Trump could go pretty low, but CNN, you take the cake

I used to like CNN and 10+ years ago watched them daily. It was my go-to news destination. But then I started see through all the BS and they sank in my mind to the very bottom. CNN has become so pathetic in the last few years and especially recent months. Anything for ratings. Yet a good number of braindead people in the US still seem to be supporting them despite their obvious bias. Thankfully most people with at least some sense left have put them on their ignore list and moved on. Karma will bite them in the butt. What used to be a good news organization has turned into a desperate trainwreck.
