Long time lurker of Rationalist tumblr. I finally made a tumblr. Also, my addtional blog for content that I fear my annoy by followers @fluffshyextra

New metaphor: Drifted from the original topic like YouTube auto-play.

Today @iamaknave told me that I’m a cat. At first I thought they were joking, but when I realized they were serious I was gripped by sudden existential horror. I can’t be a cat! I don’t like cats. I desperately searched for a counterargument, but found none. Not only are they correct, they are obviously correct, in the sense that everyone who failed to notice this before should feel a little embarrassed.

I’m okay now, and even looking forward to my epic journey of feline self-discovery. Where should I buy my striped knee socks?

In the time we’ve been at war in Afghanistan, I’ve finished elementary school, finished middle school, graduated high school, gotten into college, nearly finished college, become able to vote, become able to drink, and had two jobs.

you are a little baby, the British have been fighting Afghanistan since 1839

Fantasy writers out there: If you need a justification for eternal war, look to Afghanistan.

Anime character: I have never seen “no service” on my cell phone before.

if it turns out that general acceptability of male shirtlessness is literally just a Florida thing I will be SO ANGRY

this is worse than when I found out about the rest of the world’s key lime pies

male shirtlessness seems to be acceptable in my part of Canada as well. I have never seen any one that I know go shirtless in public, so only some subcultures might do it.

TIL that it’s possible for earphones to be misconnected such that they’re playing the instrumental to a song without playing the lyrics?

This is super weird, but I assume it has to do with how the audio encoding works. I assume different tracks are layered over each other such that the singing is a different stream of bits from the instrumental? Or something? IDEK.

I learned this because I was listening to Kartel song after Kartel song, becoming more and more distressed by the idea that the worlboss had decided to only upload instrumentals from now on. It’s only on a whim that I thought to pull out my headphone jack.

I have had this happen to me as well. In my case, it was an analogue volume control would mute the vocals at some settings.  Headphone audio is an analogue, so some frequencies could be more vulnerable resistance than others, maybe?

If the frequencies in the human vocal range were more vulnerable to the resistance, then only the instrumentals could survive.

“My Lady, while you may be upset about your twin sister’s death, but I fear that the new castle addition is make be negatively effecting your image among the populous .“

“Mrs. Johnson, you are my most trusted advisor, being my former nanny and all, but I can’t trust even you with knowledge of what I am up to, because you might hate me then.“

“You built a dark tower with no windows, don’t let anyone in or out of it, and planted a garden of garlic all around it. Suspicious strangers entering in the dark of night. Are you practicing necromancy again? I won’t have you practicing the dark arts under my watch.“

“No…. I mean not exactly. “

“Humph. I thought you learned your lesson with the former village of Easton“

“I am putting a lot of effort in to making sure that no one hurt, even if they object to undead boogeymen protecting their village.”

“Boodgeymen who ate a child.“

“Which is four less than the trolls ate“

“Because everyone moved away before they got a chance.“

“Well, you will be pleased to know that I am not creating any undead this time. No one’s grandparents will frighten people by start eating any goats again. The vampires are contained inside the town where no one will see them.“

“As I expected, you are growing vampires. My lady, you are an adult now. You can’t let your emotions take control. Think your sister wouldn’t want be a vampire.“

“I not powerful enough anyway so it don’t matter, but this is my sister’s idea, and she asked me to do this on her deathbed“

“Humph. Grief is blurring your mind. Your sister would never support this.“

“She was my twin.. but I can’t turn my sister into a vampire. Vampires come from living people“

“So you are murdering people and then locking them up in a tower? You’re better than this.“

“No. No. It’s not that bad. I’m only using vampires that already exist.“

“How on earth will you feed them?“

“Vampire’s are magically powered; they don’t have to be fed to be kept alive”

“That’s cruel. They will run away and kill entire villages in revenge. The people will riot.“

“Vampires are coming willing to me.“

“Ridiculous, vampires volunteering to starve, impossible!“

“Vampires really like math, like really really like math.“

“You’re educating vampires now? You can’t educate them, they will take over because they will get smarter than us since they don’t age!“

“I think I can fix that before it becomes a problem.. at least to according my sister.”

“Will My Lady keep from dooming humanity?“

“The wizards have been using analytical thought to create magic. This appears to be an endless source of magic, but it is very slow. However, the analytical magic can be transformed into math fairly easily“

“So you are teaching them magic that is even worse!“

“Vampires _really_ like math. They would rather be doing math than magic. I accidentally left a magic scroll behind, and they used it as scratch paper.“

“My Lady thinks that she is protecting the villages by keeping the vampires distracted, do you?“

“I hadn’t considered that, but I suppose that might happen. I’m actually am using them to develop math. More minds together means faster progress. Then I can turn the math back into magic.“

“It isn’t like you to care so much about winning the next war with Luxia.“

“I’m not! That isn’t important. I am using them to make more really tiny vampires.“

“I thought you said you weren’t killing any people, especially more children“

“That is why I need a little magic research, so that I can make my really tiny vampires from scratch with out any human input. I made the third prototype yesterday.“

“Graug! What twisted purpose does My Lady want children vampires for?“

“Children are too big. I want to make vampire sand where every grain of sand is a hard-working math-obsessive. I can optimize process to get even more vampires each day, with a mass vampire span spawn spell and then I will request a vampire sand spawn spawn, then a vampire sand spawn spawn spawn, and I’ll have exponential growth and then even higher rates of growth, in a flash, I will have every spell possible and then some.“

“What then, You are the most powerful god, what then? Is this a plan for you twins to reach godhood “

“No. I’m fixing everything. This is magic, it doesn’t make sense, it breaks the laws of logic. I will have all the magic; even logic will now bend to my will. I’m making everything better than it possible twice over.”

I’m curious about what types of things you’re referring to as social fictions

Here are some examples (I likely have stated them more extreme that they really are):

That everyone likes everyone else in the room and enjoys there company more than almost anything else (for social gatherings). This is why one says “I should get going“ or “I have to be to work early tomorrow“ instead of “I would rather go watch anime” or “I going to leave because I value inpressing my boss more that spending time with you“. One is trying to cast leaving as something one is required to do instead of a choice made freely because if you left freely, that you suggests that you don’t value these people very much.

In work place or other neutral zones, that no one within earshot in sexually attracted to anyone else besides inside already existing couples. In fact, this social fiction is enforced by law. To break this fiction can be considered sexual harassment. The most clearly fake is that retail workers actually happy all there time and really like that you are shopping here. This social fiction likely helps the stores retain more customers than if they let their employees express their real feelings. In general I think these social fiction are likely good because humans are to weak in general to be exposed to the full realities of life in a straight forward manner. (They likely see through them on an abstract manner, but that isn’t as emotionally charged like the inverse of how one can know that a movie is fake still feel emotions. These social fictions make the world appear more bland than the real world is, and prevent one from feeling emotions. )

things about being autistic: I basically model other people as telling the truth 100% of the time. I am aware that other people lie a lot, but trying to keep track of whether people are lying makes my social modeling so complicated I basically can’t do it in real time, so as a simplifying assumption I act like everyone is telling the truth.

Fortunately, I have somehow managed not to be the victim of a con artist (except probably occasionally people who ask for small amounts of money on street corners, and that I don’t care so much about).

I think that (other than certain categories of patients and obvious creepy con artists) I model people as telling the truth to me 100% of the time, and as far as I can tell this assumption works great for me and is always right.

I tend to assume that people are engaging with social fictions a large portion of the time; thus, while acting like people are perfectly honest will work most of the time, because people will maintain the social fiction, you may not believe the truth and occasionally if the cost of maintaining social fictions grows to high then you will fail to predict what will happen. Note: it is very difficult to tell things are social fictions and which are truths because people are good at lying.

So I suppose this piece of evidence goes in the evidence-against-that-I-should-diagnosis-my-self-with-autism bin. (Also, maybe this is related to why I am have social anxiety.)
