Frequently Asked Questions
What is VerseBot?
VerseBot is a reddit bot that is triggered by Bible verse references in reddit comments. It posts the contents of the verse selection as a reply to the comment with the Bible verse reference.
Where is it currently being used?
VerseBot now runs on all of reddit! However, remember that mods of subreddits can choose to ban the bot.
How do I use it?
If you want VerseBot to quote a Bible verse from your comment, simply surround it in brackets ([]) and then place the /u/VerseBot username mention somewhere in the comment. That's it! However, there are some small rules that your Bible quotation must follow:
- When specifying which book your verse comes from, you must use a name from this list.
- You must put a space between the book name and the chapter number.
- You must only ask for one verse quotation per bracket pair. However, you can have as many bracket pairs as you want!
- Additional arguments (such as desired translation) must follow the desired verse.
Other than these things, the bot is pretty flexible!
Can you give me some examples of how to use the bot?
Definitely! Here are some examples of correct usage of the bot:
Here are some examples of incorrect usage of the bot:
- /u/versebot [John3:16] (No space between book name and chapter number)
- /u/versebot [John] (No chapter specified)
- /u/versebot [Song niv of Songs 1:1] (Translation is in the middle of a book name)
- /u/versebot [John 3:16, Genesis 1:1] (Two verses are being quoted in one bracket pair)
- /u/versebot John 3:16 (There are no brackets surrounding the verse)
- /u/versebot [John 3 : 16] (Spaces between chapter, :, and verse. Only put a space between the book name and chapter!)
- John 3:16
Remember, the verse quotation can be located ANYWHERE in your comment!
What translations of the Bible are supported?
VerseBot supports most of the translations that are on BibleGateway. A full list of supported translations and their abbreviations to trigger the bot can be found here.
How do I specify a translation for my verse quotation?
Easy! Just put the desired translation in the brackets next to the desired verse.
Example: /u/versebot [John 3:16 NIV] or /u/versebot [john 3:16 kjv]. If no translation is specified, the bot defaults to the default translation for the subreddit the comment was posted in.
Can I quote verses from Deuterocanonical books?
Yes! Please take a look at the Accepted Bible Names list to see which books are supported.
Why is the bot not responding to my comment?
This could be attributed to a few different things:
- Your verse quotation doesn't follow the guidelines specified above.
- The bot is down temporarily for maintenance/updates.
- The bot has crashed. It should be automatically restarted.
- The bot is banned from the subreddit you are trying to post in.
