It's always been about race. It can't not be about race. We view all the queens through a racialized lens. It's no surprise that the most underrated winners happen to be the black ones. We see redeeming qualities in white winners that we simply do not see in black ones. Tyra is, probably, one of the best winners we have ever seen. A true rags to riches story. A queen who was not supposed to succeed succeeding. She battled suicide, a broken family, being a teen parent, being homeless, etc, all to emerge as the winner of Drag Race. If she were a white queen these things would be heralded or, at the very least, be seen as reasons for sympathy and empathy. Nope. Instead her win, her deserving win, is seen as questionable and one note. Race, ethnicity, and weight have long been the elephants in the drag race room.

I agree. I don't know why, but when a black queen doesn't act 100% congenial 100% of the time, they get criticized much more than other queens. Like when Tyra did the whole "Morgan is dead" thing it was too much, but when Morgan & Tatianna retaliated it was hilarious. Or Shea when was giving us drama and calling bullshit at the reunion, and she was a bully. Or when Nina gets gets called the n-word on her live and she retaliated by using a racial slur herself once so now she's a racist, but Sharon who has done much more problematic shit as a white man is fine? Like wtf, what's the deal

Or like how Shea was boring when she was nice during the season, but as soon as she gave us the drama people wanted from her at the reunion, she was a bitch. I saw so many people explain her as "intimidating" or "scary" even though she wasn't....but for a lot of fans out there, when they say they want bitchiness and drama, they only want it from non-black queens.

Such a good point - I think it's true that a white queen with that background story would be lauded as heroic and triumphant. She had a pretty stank attitude on season 2 but there were plenty of other stank attitudes. Someone posted a link to that music video (short film?) where she played the single parent that got beaten up by a john and she was so fucking good. My username tells you who I rooted for in season 2, but Tyra won and she deserves fucking respect. Seeing posts like that on her page grinds my gears, big time.
