The Prince William County School Board has added a gender identity and sexual orientation clause to its nondiscrimination policy according to The Washington Blade, who reported the proposal was approved in a 5-3 vote last week.
Before the votes were cast, the incumbent state delegate candidate Bob Marshall (R-Prince William), r pushing forward anti-LGBTQ legislation and a strong opponent of the transgender bathroom issue testified before the school board.
Also speaking before the board was Danica Roem, a transgender woman and Marshall’s Democratic challenger who will face off against him in the November election.
According to The Washington Blade, Marshall and his allies argue that school boards cannot enact such policies without the General Assembly approving it beforehand through a statute. The Attorney General Mark Herring issue an opinion in March 2015 that contradicted this, which you can read more about in our coverage here.
Prince George County Schools now joins Albermarle, Arlington, Fairfax, Virginia Beach, Alexandria and Richmond, all which have added gender identity and sexual orientation to their non-discrimination policies.
