Off to Angel Fire

Been a while since I posted here, I see. That doesn't mean nothing is happening. Quite the contrary; it means lots of things are happening, and I've been way too busy to worry about my Not A Blog.

I seem to have an insane amount of things on my plate. Would that there were more of me. Would that there were more hours in the day. The work is actually going well, I think... but there's so MUCH of it, on so many different fronts...

Anyway...

Today will be a pleasant interlude. I'm taking the Tesla up north to talk to the students at Walter Jon Williams' Taos Toolbox workshop... which no longer seems to be in Taos, but further north in Angel Fire. But it's a beautiful day and it should be a beautiful drive, and I always relish the opportunity to corrupt some young minds.

All the best, enjoy yourself!

But please drive safe. Love.

PS: You say the work is going well...does that mean...well, never mind.

Take your time George..
I know how important those interludes are for the creative process; I am a writer (wannabe) myself, so I think I know what many just can not come to understand.

Darwin came up with his revolutionary idea while strolling around in long walks, and never worked for more than 4 hours per day. I hope that you had a very productive lazy day, I obviously can't speak for you, but these "lazy days" are usually my most productive days.

That's a fly color George, does it drive itself? Are you checking out the Model X? Frank Ocean has a Tesla too, and his music is full of literary allusion, idk if you like him or not.

being shy
Thank you for answering my question about whether you met reclusive Steve Ditko at the first comic book convention. You wrote that you both were "shy". I sure know that feeling. Last year I attended the Comic Con in New York City and was surprised to find I was not too shy around others who shared my hobbies. It was a fun way to meet other like minded fans. Did you have that same feeling at that first convention? Did you attend by yourself or were you with a group ? Just ignore my questions if I am out of line, but I think it is exciting to think that my favorite author was once a comic book fan.

Inquiring Minds
Hey George, glad to hear work is going well and you aren't too stressed. Quick question, something very important to me and keeps me up at night. How is "Aenys" pronounced? There's no way it's the same as.... yeah. Is it "ay-knees"? Anyway, if you can clear this up if you have a minute that would be great. Thanks, happy solstice!

I'd go with niss instead of knees, but you can pronounce it however you like.

Nice to hear/read that George. You look happy, as deserved.

I think that "in so many fronts" could possible means about the ASOIAF Spin-offs. Am i right? Any news for us soon?

I'm 30% in A Storm of Swords and the new GoT season is right around the corner, so, happy times for us fans.

Winter has come here in Brazil, so, i'm start to think that the winds are closer...

Have a safe trip George :)

Beard looking good George
We should all aspire to such levels of beard greatness. Women too. Your gender is not an excuse.

Off topic opinion on Frank Herbert's "Dune"
Hi Mr. Martin. I've been wanting to ask you this question for sometime now but never could find the right opportunity so I'll dump it here and see what happens. I'm curious about your thoughts on Frank Herbert's "Dune". Its regarded as one of the most significant works in Sci-Fi but I personally hated it. Herbert had outstanding creative ideas but terrible execution. As far as my opinion goes, Dune had really cool world building but atrocious dialogue and story pacing. Dune is one of the few books I never even finished. As ignorant as it sounds I just couldn't stomach the last 60 pages. This is why I'd like to know your opinion on it. You're a huge Sci-Fi nerd and saw the genre grow from the beginning but write about 100 times better than Herbert ever did. I've heard you speak on a sort of "writing philosophy" for lack of a better term. You said "Creativity is an over rated virtue by most artists. Execution is far more important." I can't think of a better example this applies to than Dune. Although, what do I know. Most people think its a master piece. What do you think of it? Has it influenced your own writing?

Re: Off topic opinion on Frank Herbert's "Dune"
DUNE is a classic work, but I obviously like it much more than you do... but I can't say it was ever one of my favorites. Not even the first volume, which is far and away the best. DUNE MESSIAH, the first sequel, was pretty good as well... but after that, not so much. Whether by Herbert himself or by other hands, the later DUNEs failed to impress me.

Great George is great
Love to see that you're on a Tesla and doing your part for the world. Is it of your own or is it a commercial agreement of sorts, if you don't mind me asking?

I mean, I do believe you are the type of person that from a philosophical and political point of view would have one and support clean energies, just curious.

Either way, it's great to see and as a fan of green cars and GRRM it impresses me further.

Take care!

Re: Great George is great
It's mine, not a "commercial agreement."

And yes, clean energy is great... I also have solar on my houses.

Also, the Tesla is a really kickass car.

*nods* Isn't that always the way? The busier you are, the more things just pile up around you. Hopefully you will get a bit of a breather to relax and get into your own headspace once you're caught up. I'm such an introvert, all that 'peopling' would drain me and make settling down to write difficult.

Oh man! Taos, New Mexico! Land of pueblos! LOL! I adored hitch hiking through there. If you can manage a break away, they have some lovely hot springs next to the river that are just peace on Earth! =D Go late at night, take yourself a nice box wine, and sooth the soul! :P

Sorry for the unrelated question. But I'm travelling all the way from Kuwait to Helsinki to meet you at worldcon. I'd like to know what days will you be present/ doing special events so I can plan my trip accordingly.

Re: Worldcon
I will be present for the entire convention, but I'm not yet sure of the days and times of my program items. However, I expect I'll be around in the dealer's room and at the parties, as always... and of course, at the Hugo Awards.

Who was the most influential teacher/professor in your life?
Would it happen to be that professor from NU, the one who inspired you to write "The Fortress" ?

Re: Who was the most influential teacher/professor in your life?
Franklin Scott was his name, as I recall. He obviously had an impact on my life, yes, but no, he was not a huge influence.

Of my Northwestern professors, the biggest impact was the late great Bergen Evans, though I doubt he ever knew who I was. An amazing man and the best lecturer I ever heard, however.

I had plenty of other good teachers, though.

Real talk
Big Bro, live life and enjoy life. Nice Tesla btw.

I've recently become a writer, not in the same field as You, but a poet. And You've played a big part in that. But what we do have in common are the stories that we tell, the emotion and the detail to make each word fit.

That's why i don't agree with People rushing You to get that book out, it will come - when it comes. You can't rush art. You can't rush a masterpiece. But i guess that's what makes us Human - but regardless, i wish You all the best on Your project and if You need time, take it. I'm not complaining, none of You should too.

Ah, so Angel Fire is an actual physical place? And they keep all those old webpages in there?
