Skype has a built-in contacts manager designed to help you search for people and add them to your contacts list. How you go about adding contacts to Skype varies slightly depending on whether you're using the Skype mobile app or a desktop version of the program.

Add Contacts Using the Skype App for Mobile Devices

Step

Sign in to your account, tap the three-dot menu icon in the bottom-right corner of any screen and select Add People on the pop-up menu.

Step

Use the search field at the top of the screen to search for the person you want to add. You can search by name, Skype name or email address. When you locate the person, tap her name on the list of search results.

Step

Tap the Add to Contacts button, add a message to the person in the provided field, if you wish, and then tap the check mark icon or Send button to send a contact request to the person. The person is available for communication only after the request is accepted.

Add Contacts Using Desktop Versions of Skype

Although there are a number of versions of Skype for desktop computers, searching for contacts works essentially the same way in all of them -- though there are slight variations, mostly in how you open the search tool. In the version for Windows 8, click the People icon, click the Add Contact icon and search for the contact. In the version for Macs, click Contacts in the left column and then select Add Contact.

Regardless of the operating system you're running, you then enter the name, Skype name or email address of the contact you want to add. Select the person on the list of search results and click Add to Contacts. Enter a message to the person, if you wish, and then click the Send button to send the contact request. The contact must approve your request before he appears in your list of Skype contacts.

Importing Contacts From Other Locations

When you sign in to Skype using a Microsoft account, your Messenger contacts are automatically imported into your contacts list.

Skype also enables you to import contacts from Facebook. In the Windows 8 and Windows Desktop versions of Skype, click Contacts on the main menu and select Import Contacts. Enter your Facebook username and password in the provided fields and then click the Import button.

Right-click anywhere on the screen in the modern Windows 8 version of Skype and select Save Number to add a cell or landline number. Enter the name and phone number in the provided fields and then click Save.
