You had a hypothesis that it was the Thai food so you tested it and confirmed. Congratulations, you're a scientist. A dehydrated, water shitting scientist.

I have suspected dishes to have been the cause of my spontaneous diahrea. I have continued to eat multiple servings of each dish which has further supported my hypothesis of them being the cause of my diahrea. I have never thrown away a dish. Tyson buffalo chicken strips gave me runs three consecutive times, the fourth meal didn't.

Yeah, but, Thai food is fucking good. Last time I was in Thailand I had this Thai red curry and it was off the charts delicious and spicy as fuck.

Come 5am, and I have to take a massive fire-dump. Then again at 5:30, and again at 6:30. By that stage it reallllly hurt my butthole.

Then I did again that night. Same thing the next morning, 3 massive fire-dumps. No regrets, I'd do it again.

Thai red curry

Recommend trying this in the US? I went to a Thai food cart near my work a couple times last week and got Pad Thai. I stole a bite of curry from a coworker(not red curry, it was pumpkin avocado or something like that) and it was pretty good, but it was my first time trying curry so I still don't feel like I got a good idea of what Thai curry is like. Should I go for red curry next time or is there something else you think is worth trying to give me the best idea of what curry is like?

[–]cfb_rolley 7 ポイント8 ポイント  (2子コメント)

I highly recommend red curry, but if you're not a big fan of spice it may blow your brains out, depending on whether or not they make it spicy spicy or "western spicy".

I also highly recommend green curry and it's also very easy to make at home too.

Edit: pad thai is the absolute shit man! I like it almost as much as red curry

[–]BeastftMiddleEast 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Thanks so much man! My coworker ordered it "medium" and the bite I had was quite spicy but definitely not too much. I'm a little aware of the difference in spice levels so I'll make sure to make it clear that I don't want it "thai spicy", but I definitely like some heat :D

I'll try green curry some time too, maybe even homemade. Cheers! :D

[–]soggyfritter 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Try Panang if it's available. It's super flavorful and the coconut milk helps ameliorate the burning somewhat.

[–]overfloaterx 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (1子コメント)

Definitely worth trying. Couple of things to bear in mind:

  • Green curry is the spiciest. (Contrary to what many people seem to think.) It tends to have a more bite than the other types.
  • Red curry is more moderately spicy. It tends to be marginally sweeter than green and (IMO) has a richer, fuller flavor.
  • Yellow curry is usually slightly less spicy, sweeter, and richer again.

If you're comfortable with some heat, I'd recommend going for a red curry. Really it's the flavor profile that varies with the color rather than the heat, since any type can be made more/less spicy by varying the amount of chili peppers used. You can always ask them to keep the spiciness mild/moderate.

All 3 above are based on coconut milk, which makes them all slightly sweet. (Compared to, say, some tomato-based Indian curries, or other broth-like Thai curries that don't feature coconut milk.) And Thai curries typically use fresh ingredients over dried spices. I'm not sure if it's a combination of those two factors or something else entirely, but I find that Thai curries give you the spicy bite which then clear off your palate relatively quickly -- it doesn't linger in the mouth, building and burning over time as some Indian and Mexican spices seem to.

Massaman curry is another alternative, especially if you're concerned about the heat. It's rich but usually only mildly spicy, with ingredients (potatoes, peanuts) and spices (cardamom, cloves, star anise, etc.) not found in other Thai dishes, having Indian and Malay influences.

Quality can vary depending where you go, so it's kind of the luck of the draw unless someone can give you a recommendation locally. That said, I've only ever had one bad Thai curry. (Oily, glutinous and luminous pink, rather than thick, smooth and red. The whole thing tasted like what can only be described as a cheap Chinese takeout -- really no Thai flavors at all, very weird.)

[–]BeastftMiddleEast 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Thanks so much, that was a great Curry 101! I'm going to grab some red curry in a few minutes!

[–]BobbyDavros 18 ポイント19 ポイント  (1子コメント)

You can pretty much guarantee a bad case of the bum waters whenever I have Thai curry, regardless of where I order it from, so the only logical explanation is my stomach lining or my intestines or some other part of the chain can't take it, rather than all the Thai restaurants in my area have manky chicken.

It's a price I'm willing to pay for a ticket to Flavour Country.

Went to my local Thai spot and over the course of a couple of weeks went up to what they call "Thai Hot". I knew I should have worried when the kitchen and wait staff stopped to watch me eat. Every other plate I ordered had a fresh green bean, it was replaced by a fresh Thai chile. I had to put my bowels on reset for 3 days after that. Had diarrhea that day and pain the following 2 days. When I go there now I stay around the medium level.

I just got back from Southeast Asia and while I was in Thailand my friend comes back to our table and tells us that while he was in the bathroom he heard this super loud plunging sound in the stall next to him of someone unclogging the toilet. Then as he's washing his hands out walks the guy, a waiter at the restaurant. The guy just keeps on walking without stopping to so much as think about washing his hands. And to think that's not even one of the places I got food poisoning from on my trip. Sometimes it's best if you just don't realize the hygiene levels of what's going on back there (at least when abroad haha).

[–]utspg1980 39 ポイント40 ポイント  (1子コメント)

[–]WhatsaHoya 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (1子コメント)

[–]Narfubel 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Lot's of casual restaurant workers don't care either when they're in the back and no one is looking. I worked in a restaurant for a few months and was pretty surprised how people acted once the customers or manager couldn't see them.

[–]Calvin0433 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (2子コメント)

Yea I own a Thai food place but I'm fairly strict on the kitchen area with sanitation and what not. There's a Chinese restaurant near mine who I've heard stories about from the city inspector. They tend to not clean up after work and lave everything out. Also the Orkin guy said he stopped being their bug guy because they just wouldn't follow any directions he would give them. They've found a swarm cockroaches in their outlet box. Its usually a problem when the roaches come out in the light.

You might enjoy this personal story of mine related to diarrhea and Thia food.

About a year and a half agoy family and I went out to dinner. We had thia. It was awesome. On the 10 minute drive home it hit me. I literally jumped out of the car at a light and ran into a KFC. My family laughed it off and poked fun but that's all it was, just fun.

From that day on I cannot be in a car without feeling like I have to use the restroom. If I'm by myself I am fine. But if I am with anyone else I have this feeling that I have to go right now, then when I try nothing happens. Its way worse when I am in the passenger seat. I just finished up some counseling for this and it is slowly improving, but over all I turned into a hermit and it affected every aspect of my life. I am happy to be "normal" again and not get those feelings, but I still don't really go out much anymore because of it. If I do I have to drive.

[–]MsMeowingtons 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (0子コメント)

A similar thing happened to me, but it was at a deli style restaurant and I was sick before we left the restaurant. I hate to dine out now and that was three years ago! I'm curious about what you learned in counseling.

There was a mexican restaurant that had smothered breakfast burritos for $2 that were fucking delicious but gave me the shits within half an hour every single time. Through the process of elimination (literally in this case) I determined it was the green chile. I can eat green chile at other restaurants just fine so I don't know what they put in it that was different and none of my friends had problems with them. So it was just some weird ingredient reaction local to me.

I'd still go there every couple weeks even when I knew what was going to happen. Those burritos were that good.

This is me. Every time I eat hot peppers, I get diarrhea. Every time. But I love hot peppers and frequently forget the distress they cause me later. I will sometimes get something spicy at a restaurant and suffer the consequences later, only to wake up the next morning, find the leftovers in the fridge and eat them before I go to work. Usually around the start of second period English in front of a class of 8th graders do I truly realize the mistake that I have made.

So we get back to the hotel room and about 2hrs later all hell breaks loose for both of us. We end up taking turns on toilet for half the night. Apparently you're supposed to report getting food poisoning to restaurants after which they have to close down and investigate in order to prevent more poisoning

A friend of mine once had a chinese take-out of legend, which ended up resembling Homer's famous sub. It started innocently with him ordering a truly monstrous amount of food.

In the end, as he struggled to eat it all, I think he re-heated it about 4 times. No one had a clue about rice being dodgy to re-heat then, or at least we didn't. Over the course of 3 days or so, he noticed increasingly bad upset stomach problems from each meal. He finished it and ended up with a full day or ass-pissing, but apparently it still tasted ok.

Rice is dogdy to reheat?

Yes. It's actually an easy way to get sick.

If you got sick from Asian food, and you didn't eat seafood, it was probably the rice.

(I am in the UK, and this is now a kind of well-known here. If it's isn't in the USA, then I will expect more downvotes. Bless you reddit).

Damn, that's fucked up, thanks for the info! My stomach was actually pretty messed up for a few days last week, so I've been pretty careful about what I have been eating. Based on that warning it looks like I need to store it asap if I want to have it as leftovers.
