soo, question: Was this arrangement by the radio show or the Alamo?
Because afaik it was the Radio show that booked it and gave away the cards
So its the Radio show assuming their viewers are suffering from effects of toxic masc, i.e the fear of physical nonsexual nonromantic intimacy with other men, the fear of appearing gay, i.e feminized, i.e weak.
So if I was male I'd be a bit (understatement) pissed about that assumption.
And I'd be pissed about criticism that looks like it makes fun of those men who won a ticket, implying its their wish that made the arrangement.
I find it funny in a very nonfunny way.
Lets make fun of that stupid radioshow thinking of their viewers as emotionally stunted homophobes.
Please lets not support their work(i.e furthering toxic masculinity) by taking that assumption as gospel and mocking single individual people for being a part by winning a ticket and basically suffering this systematic shit.

Definitely the radio station. Normally, when you try to book tickets on the Drafthouse app, it actually gives you a warning for leaving an empty spot. http://imgur.com/5MBcaya

Yup. But it's a pretty common assumption, so I'm only a bit pissed because it's not worth getting worked up over every time and this isn't as damaging as other examples.

And I'd be pissed about criticism that looks like it makes fun of those men who won a ticket, implying its their wish that made the arrangement.

No... They wanted tickets to a stupid "manly man" screening that's only come about as a reaction to WW women only screenings. The whole setup is based on toxic masculinity, so my sympathy for those men that bought into it is very limited. And they're always free to not go if they think it's stupid.

Just to be clear, you can totally pull off man only screenings. But the moment they picked a Metallica documentary, it was clear where they were heading. The band members of Metallica hate each other, they'd leave a spare row between each other. This isn't a joke, all four of them have their own tour bus just so that they don't have to share a space with each other. They can't be a positive example of masculinity.

Sure, but such a screening would have to be about celebrating male friendships. The whole point of the women-only Wonder Woman screening was for women to come together and enjoy their superhero movie as a communal experience.

Really, that's the entire point of any special screening: you go to these because you want to enjoy a movie with other people. If you want to go see a movie alone, you can go to any other screening. So to purposely organize a special screening of a movie just so everyone can sit alone in silence is just sad and pathetic.

So..."Jackass: The Movie"?

so, I don't live in the US so I don't know that radio studio- do you know whether the seating was something explicitly advertised as a plus?

[–]OneJobToRuleThemAllGerman bank robber doing an Alan Rickman impression 4

Dunno, I don't live in the U.S. either. But my alarm bells would ring at "male only screening of movie about Metallica," so I have little sympathy for anyone that stumbled into this.

[–]WizeOaldOwlBan Sex 51

This would just be boring if it were just the screening. No one would care. But that seating thing. That puts it square into mock the hell out of this territory.

[–]CaelrieNew Mod, Same Great Oppression![S] 26

I wonder if they're upset that nobody cares it's a men-only screening.

They probably are. The whole reason they did this was to piss people off.

[–]CaelrieNew Mod, Same Great Oppression![S] 17

Over on srssucks, they're pretending we're salty so they have something to feel justified about. It's pretty silly. I guess that's what you do when people go 'meh' at your protest.

I haven't seen ANYONE pissed about this so good job.

Of course no one's pissed about this. It's not offensive, it's just pathetic.

What's wrong with sitting next to another guy? In general, people don't like to sit next to strangers in cinemas at all, but what makes this specifically a dude thing?

All this does is make it so people who are going as a group have to spread out when I reckon they'd be happy sitting right next to each other.

I like it, personally.

I am like 1.5 normal people across the shoulders, so I'm always in an armrest cold war.

it's a corollary to urinal etiquette, i think

Y'know, guys, some women would be happy with that seating arrangement, too. Though we're more likely to say that it's liking to have our own personal space and not gay cooties.

edit: It also reminds me of an old puzzle from Games Magazine, about a bar for misanthropes. The bar put in barstools in a line, but because the patrons were misanthropes, they'd always sit as far away from each other as possible. To maximize the number of stools filled, the bar made a rule that the first arrival had to pick one of two stools. The puzzle was figuring out which stools resulted in the most filled.

On a related note, Through the Never is a FUCKING AWESOME concert movie and seeing the part where they use a giant Tesla coil onstage to recreate the Ride the Lightning cover art always puts a massive grin on my face.

Who'd go to the movies without their partner if they had a choice?

Someone whose taste in movies drastically differs from their partner's?

Going to the movies by yourself is lovely, but if you can't lean over and gently lick another man's ear then there isn't much point.

It may sound shitty on its face, but I like going to the movies alone since my taste in film usually doesn't jibe with the rest of my friend group

I would, because I don't have one.

No this isn't a failure because we're ridiculous sexist assholes, having two thirds of the theatre empty is completely intentional.

AHAHA, It's a play on the fact men won't use urinals directly next to one that's being used. Must say I actually had a chuckle at this.

Guy code stuff, you women wouldn't understand

[–]CaelrieNew Mod, Same Great Oppression![S] 10

Nah, guys really do this in theaters. It's a play on nothing.

Making it mandatory is definitely a play on the urinal code.

guys really do this in theaters

To be honest where I'm from if there are plenty of empty seats it's a little weird to go pick a seat directly next to a stranger. Same with pubic transportation.

[–]CaelrieNew Mod, Same Great Oppression![S] 6

Two guys who go to the movies together almost always leave an empty seat between them. I guess they figure if their knees touch, they'll have to get married.

Weird, never seen this. Where I'm from, people tend to leave a space between themselves and strangers, but people who came as a group always sit together.

[–]WizeOaldOwlBan Sex 18

I'm not sure about "almost always." I've never seen this. I've never done this. Every time I go the movies with guy friends, we sit next to each other because we wanted to watch the movie together. I'm sure some insecure homophobic douche bags do this, but I haven't seen it.

I agree. I always sit next to whoever I went with, regardless of gender, and never seen anyone else do otherwise.

The U.S.

I go to movies, with friends and solo, can confirm. Unless the person I'm with is a friend of mine, I'm picking a spot with an empty space on either side of me (if possible) for elbow room, at least until someone else needs those empty spots. If they're friends then of course I'm sitting with them. How else am I going to make fun of the movie? Just saying it to myself? Real life isn't Reddit, I need an audience.

Holy shit. If ever there was a perfect study in toxic masculinity manifested in the world this is it. It's so on the nose I'm not even sure if it's satire or not.

I must sit alone so that other men do not think that I am gay. I must ensure that the reason I am sitting alone is known to other men so that they know I am not gay. In order to be happy I must be alone, and the world must know that I am not gay.

It's like a really fucked up version of the fear mantra from Dune.

Modern American men are a fucking mess and this kind of shit is why. And yeah, sorry Americans, it is mostly you.
