Can you tell us more about the super-fast evaluations you use?

The cognitive evaluation is super-fast, but only because it’s part of a longer and more involved general psychiatric evaluation. If a person seems generally with it (is able to introduce themselves, understands why they are seeing me) then my cognitive evaluations usually involve the following questions:

1. What’s today’s date?

2. Who’s the President? Who was President before that? What about before that?

3. Name the five Great Lakes (this is easier for Michiganders than it might be for other people)

4. I want you to remember the three words “house”, “blue”, and “tulip”. I’ll ask you those again in a minute.

5. What’s 100 - 7. What’s that minus 7? Keep subtracting sevens until I tell you to stop.

6. What do an apple and an orange have in common? A diamond and a ruby? A train and an airplane?

7. What were those three words I just asked you to remember?

8. If I’m feeling extra responsible, or I have a lot of time, or I’m seriously suspecting a cognitive impairment, I’ll give people the Montreal Cognitive Assessment
