Plant Extinction Prevention Program

"Preserving Hawai‘i's Rarest Plants Through Teamwork"
Donate To PEPP
  • Since PEPP began, Hawaii has experienced ZERO plant extinctions!
  • PEPP implements recovery actions for over 190 Threatened and Endangered plant species each year.

Methods to Success

Focusing on the 238 PEP Species with fewer than 50 wild individuals

Collect Propagules

We collect fruit, seeds, and cuttings for long term storage, research, propagation, and return to the wild.
177 PEP species collected, stored and grown at partner facilities

Protect Wild Plants

We combat the many plant, animal, and environmental threats facing Hawai`i's rarest plants.
Constructed 28,000 feet of fencing protecting 64 PEP Species

Survey for New Plants

We scour the Hawaiian Islands for wild plants, new species, and species believed extinct.
Discovered more than 12 new species

Outplant in the Wild

We create new populations of rare species in protected locations to ensure their long-term survival
Reintroduced 51,000 outplants representing 116 rare species

Monitor Populations

We track the growth, health and reproduction of wild and reintroduced plants.
Over 120 rare species now regenerate naturally!
