I wonder why I haven’t seen mentioned, in discussions of tone policing, the fact that some people have trauma such that having people behave aggressively toward them can completely FREAK. THEM. OUT. I feel like this is an important trade off to consider when making the decision not to tone police in a given space. I assume someone has brought this up before, but I haven’t seen it myself.

Data point: I am freaked out by aggression! Shouting, swearing, raised voices, even a “sharp and pointed tone”, and certainly that sort of tumblrsnark “friendly reminder that you are a piece of shit uwu”. Cannot deal. Big factor in why I am not in political spaces.

Same, though mostly it’s when people I know direct it at or near me.
