"Move over, Photobucket! I got this!" - Webshots CEO

It's Waffleimages time to shine again, goons.

Getting back the images from Let's Play Deus Ex would be like seeing the second coming.

I've been using this site for my projects lately: https://www.ambytion.com

It's still in beta but I like the way the albums layout better. Seems like it could turn into something great with time.

https://www.ambytion.com/a/s/sqKFPq7V2HTyE483AtS2fg

And to boot they offer instant import if imgur galleries if anyone thinking of trying it out.

An Ambytion is anything you can achieve or finish.

Those might be goals such as traveling to an exciting destination, get a tattoo, lose weight, learn a skill or a language. Or projects such as DIY, woodworking, jewelry, home brewing etc.

Fucking hipsters, kill yourselves.

Lightshot could take over. They have an advantage with that browser plugin they offer. I see it used all the time.

There's tinypic.io,

Some people on reddit seem to like it.

Damn, I've been literally enraged with using imgur lately (fuck albums), but it looks like I'm finally gonna leave that shitty website. I sincerely hope that it dies off soon.

We could start posting alternate links of top images/gifs in the comments of top posts.

Oh, god, here comes the influx of bots.

eta: AutoMod should probably give a message about imgur links from now on. (ex: "Because of recent events, please use PornHub instead of (((imgur))) for all your hosting needs.")

Ha, it would be pretty cool if Pornhub stepped in as a generic image host.

PH could stand for photo hosting.

It happens with all image hosting. Image hosting isn't the easiest thing to monetize. I don't know if you know this but Imagr isn't providing image hosting out of the kindness if their hearts.

Yep, this is the kind of thing that always goes through cycles

It started out that way. No ads, free image hosting for redditors.

Exactly, started out as. But it was not gonna stay that way forever.

But it was that way for almost a decade.

You don't just change one day after a decade of doing business a certain way unless you want to go out of business.

The question is, were they actually doing business?

Yes. They kept their doors open.

For almost a decade.

For years it worked because the costs were low enough and ads paid high enough. Then costs rose as more people used the site and ads brought in less revenue. They've been running on VC funding for half a decade.

For.

A.

DECADE.

Robin Williams lived for 5 decades and then he offed himself. Wtf things changed?

Does it mean reddit won't stay free forever also? I'm getting scared here.

PANIC!

Really not pleased with this since I developed an app that utilizes the Imgur API for uploading and direct linking images. The thought of redoing that part of my app makes me sick.

Wtf imgur

Just using fucking S3.

Probably about free image hosting?

spending billable man hours building an app that depends on the goodwill and generosity of imgur shareholders without even bothering to read their API terms

Have you looked up opportunities, in like the food industry for example, where your level of expertise would be better put to use?

YES! Going the way of ImageShack!

I'm so happy that the "bandwidth exceeded" banners of yore will now be succeeded by that stupid fucking giraffe.

Thinking about all the posts over the past half-decade being intercepted by redundant, bandwidth-intensive requests (with ad-tracking) simply makes my heart flutter.

...wait, shit, this really IS the Imageshack experience.

Imageshack used to be so good and then they pulled all sorts of crap and made a pay wall and I jumped ship to imgur never to look back.

WHAT'S NEXT!??

They've been cancerous for a while now and it's only getting worse.

I have really want to look at a link before I bother clicking on one if I see it's hosted hosted on Imgur these days.

You can't save images.

This goes beyond shit usability - this is breaking the functionality of a web browser.

I can't save a digital file that I'm fucking looking at. That's something the trillion-dollar movie industry demanded secret hardware for, and apparently all they had to do was play stupid games with URLs.

Well i blame the fucking browsers too. How the fuck can a browser not be able to save an image its fucking displaying right now.

Mozilla and Google definitely a slap on the wrist after Instragram made its intentions clear. All browsers need better tools for preserving content. Stupid HTML tricks to "protect" images date back to Geocities pages alerting "COPYWRITED DO NOT STEAL!!!" on right-click.

It doesn't work, it's harmful to users, and everyone who tries it should suffer.

I will say, what they did was clever. I made a /r/modclub post and someone posted un-bullshit instructions.

Clever? They've killed themselves. They are a file host that can't host files.

Forcing ephemerality on unsourced digital files is some Memory Hole bullshit. Images that can excite you, change your mind, or change your life - images that are trivial to store and retransmit - disappear. It is intolerable to anyone who values the internet as a part of real life.

Technically clever. In any other sense, it was dumb. I should've been more clear.

This should be at the top.

One image host to rule them all, One image host to find them,

One image host to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

Glad to note I'm not the only one that had problems with Imgur lately.

Yeah, I thought it was just the sysadmins just screwing stuff up initially, but I guess it was worse than pure incompetence.

Quick and dirty method on how to undo this (chrome or firefox):

  1. Grab this extenstion: Chrome - Modify Header Value (HTTP Headers), also available for firefox.
  2. Open it's options
  3. Add new row with below settings:
  • URL: https://i.imgur.com/
  • Header name: Accept
  • Header value: image/*
  • Click + to add the new row, done!

screenshot of how settings should look. Also can test it's working against the screenshot.

umatrix for Firefox + permanently block everything else apart from the image in imgur pages. No comments, call outs, no of views and other bullshit, just the image. Spending 5 minutes to click on page elements to block them permanently is definitely worth it on imgur.

Does µMatrix conflict w/ NoScript?

I've been using both together for months and I haven't seen anything breaking due to those being used together.

First album sorting fuckery, now this.

http://i.imgur.com/31dUSoA.gif

I literally previously noticed something was up, because I couldn't link the above, and had to re-bookmark it. How apposite.

By the way, did anyone else notice that they took away the link to add a new album, under 'images' > 'add images' > 'add to album' (where I've put an X)? I'm sure you used to be able to choose to create a new album there before selecting an image to upload, now you have to go into albums, and create the album, but you can't choose to add images to it from your 'puter, only images you have previously uploaded, so you have to close the image selection box and go back into 'images' to upload to your new album!! It's absolutely fucking retarded now, as far as I can see. Photobucket come back, all is forgiven. At least they had an FTP upload option, though it mangled filenames.

Albums have worked about 70% of the time for me. Sometimes the images don't load properly, but they seem to work on mobile.

All 13 images in my album load on my desktop. Only 10 are recognized in Alien Blue.

Oh no, something bad is happening to imgur. That's awful!

Good thing they have that de facto monopoly that they maintained by treating their users well instead of doing collusive social engineering with their postmodern buttbuddies at Reddit.

postmodern

How do people expect Imgur to make money if everyone used direct image links? Like, I'm really curious.

People don't regard it as too crazy an idea for imgur because for years that was imgur's explicit business model and it turned them a profit:

  1. lots of people use imgur as an image host
  2. while visiting imgur to upload images they realize it's a community/browsing site onto itself
  3. some uploaders sign up for (now defunct) imgur pro and get pro accounts and more features
  4. some of them stay for the community/browsing and the ads they see pay for the site.

Imgur actually bootstrapped itself (no VC) for five years, and then got a 40mil funding round.

The problem was they were profitable but not profitable enough for the interest on those VC loans, so they had to "create additional revenue streams" which when it comes to tech startups means cannibalizing your userbase for that last dollar in hopes of an acquisition by a desperate corporate giant.

Personal experience being the only possible source of knowledge.

I'm almost caught up on the latest season of silicon valley.

Worked for 5 years at one. A startup is just another fucking company.

Does everything useful have to be a maximally-profitable business?

Craigslist is mostly free (they charge for real estate postings in NYC, and jobs in a few other places) and it makes more than enough to keep their servers running, pay a small staff good salaries, and make the founder a [mere] multimillionaire.

it does when the plan is to get bought out and retire.

How do people expect Imgur to make money

We don't. Imgur is pulling some petty bourgeois nonsense. Classic late stage capitalism. I bet their CEO is even a white bro.

Well, imgur encouraged it at first and then didn't discourage it for almost a decade.

Put an ad on the bottom of the page? FFS, it isn't complicated.

I am not sure that you understand the concept of direct image links...

Sure I do. I also understand that appending a png to bottom of another image is easily scripted.

You're a genius. You should start an image hosting service.

How does imgur expect to make money by fucking with the format that people want to use? Image hosting is just a shitty business to be in.
