The Dems will REEEEEEEEE and do what Trump "didn't want." Then they call it a moral victory, Pat themselves on the back, all while Trump still got what he wanted.

Except they're actually not flip flopping. If you think about what the ideal that they're trying to achieve of "non impact", the existence of human beings is bad for the planet. That's why whenever renewable projects actually become practical, they oppose those too (windmills kill birds, solar panels defile the landscape, etc). The only form of energy they've ever been in favor of is imaginary energy.

Those damn solar panels suck up all the good sunlight and leave just the bad sunlight that causes skin cancer.

Two things of note I gathered from the article.

Gleason estimates that as designed his wall could produce 2megawatts, or enough to power between 500 and 1000 homes, for each mile of wall.

That is F'n awesome. That's 3.86 Gigawatts. That's more than 3 nuclear plants.

Flesch has studied wildlife on the borderlands between the United States and Mexico for almost twenty years, and he’s found that the wall hurts animals—especially those whose numbers are already perilously low—by limiting connectivity. He finds the potential environmental risks of building a wall—even a solar wall—across the whole border to be quite troubling.

We call those animals "illegal aliens".

3.86 Gigawatts?!? Great Scott; that's enough to power a DeLorean through time 3 times over. (1.21 x 3 = 3.63) Maybe this is how Pence does it...

The solar panels were in fact Pence's idea. He wanted a clean way to power the time machine. They may need to power up to 3 'jumps' a day. Hence the 3.63 (or greater) required output. That's the word on the street, anyway.

I will admit though, the effects on the migrations of (nonhuman) animals is my only real concern with the wall. All other arguments can suck my dick. But this one is compelling to me.

While I agree that isn't the point of why everyone is ridiculing the left over it. The libs have been pushing solar energy for years as a " green way to power the planet" and we're saying trump was evil for wanting to cut funding to the company that was making them under the Obama administration. Now that trump is trying to make a solar wall the liberals are all of a sudden saying the panels are evil and bad for the planet!

I wonder how efficient it would be to have a field of mirrors which track the sun via microcontrollers, and reflect the light onto a stirling engine. Not really ideal for a wall i imagine, but just in comparison to photovoltaics or wind farms for the same sized space.

Its more efficient to have them power a regular turbine through steam production.

There are modules you can get reach net zero energy (they produced as much energy as it took to make) in a year. This depends on the company of course.

Silicon is one of the worlds most abundant resources and is made primarily from sand. While rare earth metals have been phased out with cheaper and higher efficiency replacements.

The solar panels are funny but it will never happen because solar energy is not a viable source of energy. President Trump is literally trolling the left. Maybe even baiting them into researching and or privately funding the panels which will never recoup their costs.

I'm not a environmental radical, but I find your statement false. I power wholly with solar. It was cheaper to do then to run underground (mandatory because of distance) wires to my house. The farm next door is gridtied and produces enough to receive a check at the end of the year. What is lacking is storage, and that may well be the next big job boom in this country. Panels can be bought for under a dollar a watt, large orders are well under a dollar a watt.

Spot on. We're still very far from making solar a real baseline energy source, but solar energy production is so cheap and plentiful in some regions that large scale storage solutions are inevitable (or even required to prevent overloading the grid).

I wish more people knew this. Our power grid can't handle variable power input. We need to be able to store it. Musk's home batteries are a solution to that. But the REAL environmental issue w/ batteries and panels is the amount of waste and pollution generated in their production.

If storage is an issue you have entire swaths of untouched land on the Texan American board with nothing worthwhile but space to store massive batteries for a walk sized solar array.

Seriously. Texas, AZ, New Mexico, NV. Nothing but space.

I think AZ is the biggest head turner. Apparently they have shitty government regulation that allows utilities to charge a monthly fee for interconnection. It totally negates any financial benefit thus PV is scant in the fucking desert of all places.

Storage costs and capacities have been quietly dropping for several years now, and there's no reason to think that will stop anytime soon. If anything, we should see it accelerate now that so much industry and science are directed to that field.

So what do you do on a cloudy day?

The panels still produce but at a lower rate, they feed into a battery bank. I have enough storage to go a week. In Dec. I have had to charge with a generator but only a handful of times in the last five years.

Not a bad setup. As a former electrician and current EE student, I always wonder about efficiency with these things. I imagine its not great with charging the batteries, then drawing them down and inverting the voltage. The only ones I've ever worked on were grid-tied systems and I hated the fact that they shut down when the grid shuts down. I'd be so pissed off to have solar panels on my roof on a sunny day and still have no power because the grid is down.

Oh I don't know, Trump may be onto something. I thought it was a good idea, make some power for the grid, and if there is a surplus, sell it to Mexico. Thus, Mexico pays for the wall. 0_o

The actual gist of the article is that walls are damaging to wildlife (which is true) although I suspect all the immigrants crossing the border do way more damage to wildlife and a wall would.

The headline is a bit misleading (wow that's new..) since it implies solar walls are bad, whereas it's actually saying: the environmental benefit of some green energy is outweighed by a wall messing with habitats.

The issue with that argument is that beyond it being misleading, can be used on virtually every other green energy system too. Wind Power for instance is notorious for killing birds. However everyone is fine with it and wind power continues. So this is the type of thing where if you push it, it really weakens all your core arguments.
