Today, our English teacher Michael wrote this blog to give you some “Tips” about speaking English!
Hello everyone! My name is Michael Johnston. I am a New Zealander working at Lexis Japan as an English Instructor. I am CELTA-qualified, and I hold a degree in English Literature and Linguistics.
こんにちは！みなさん！私の名前はマイケル ジョンストンです。ニュージーランド出身でLexis Japanで英語講師をしています。CELTAの資格を持ち、文学と言語学の学位も保持しています。
You could say I know a lot about English usage. All of my students find my lessons fascinating. I love to share the world of English, as it is used by native speakers! Did you know that you can agree to anything by saying “Same here!”? It doesn’t matter if you are responding to a positive or a negative statement.
英語に関する知識をたくさん持っていますし、私の生徒はみんな私のレッスンがとても面白いといいます。私はネイティブスピーカーが使う教科書英語でない英語もレッスンの中でシェアすることが大好きです。例えば、”Same here!”っていうだけで、肯定文・否定文どちらの文章でも話し手に同意することができるって知っていましたか？
“My friend quite likes cream cheese.” 「僕の友達はクリームチーズが大好きなんだ！」
“Same here!” 「僕も（好き）！」
“But he’s not too fond of blue cheese.” 「でも彼はブルーチーズは大嫌いなんだ！」
“Same here! “ 「僕も（嫌い）！」
It’s that quick and simple to use. ね？こんなに簡単に使えるんですよ。
And did you know that to keep a conversation going, it’s better to ask short questions? Why’s that? Because we can show interest without breaking the flow of the conversation. You see? What sort of questions? Well, if we want to hear some examples, we would ask Such as? And if we needed a reason for something, we would say How come?
This is the sort of practical English I teach at Lexis Japan.
あと、会話を続けるために「短い質問」をしたほうがいいって知っていましたか？なぜかって？なぜなら、会話の腰を折らずに話してに興味をあることを示せるからなんですよ。わかりますか？どんな“短い質問”だと思いますか？それはですね、もし会話の流れの中で「え？例えば？」って聞きたければ”Such as?”というだけでいいんです。そしてもし「え？なんで？」と理由が聞きたければ”How come?”と言えばいいんですよ。ネイティブスピーカーはこのHow come?をWhy?より日常的には使います。
このような実用的な英語もレッスンの中で教えていますよ！
However, some of our students are more interested in Business English. But they are unaware of the idioms or the set phrases used in this context. Perhaps they are using a less appropriate form of English! In a casual setting, between friends, we might say:
しかしながら、生徒さんの中にはビジネス英語を話せるようになりたいな！と思っている人もいます。ただ、その生徒さんたちはビジネス英語におけるイディオムやフレーズを意識していないんですよね。おそらく彼らはフォーマルな英語をそれほど使っていないのです。例えば、友達との間などのカジュアルな場面では、
“Oh, how’s it going? Haven’t seen you for ages!”
「おお！元気？久しぶり！」と言いますが、
But in Business English, between a client and a business person, the register is more formal:
クライアントとの会話やビジネスの場面では、
“Hello Ms. Stevens, it’s a pleasure to do business with you again.”
「こんにちは、スティーブンさん。また一緒の仕事を共にする機会をいただけて光栄です」と言いますね。
