I feel like this is how people treat children- "well you didn't want it so now you don't get it, how do you like that?"
-
-
-
I'm also not sure how this is "free market" in any way
-
it's not, but a true free market for insurance just doesn't work, so it's hard to fault for that not being on the table.
-
Yeah, just noting the discrepancy between their language and this. Also not sure how this provision addresses market failures in any way.
-
.
@MattAFiedler points out that this provision could make things worsehttps://twitter.com/MattAFiedler/status/878650803896111104 … -
well yeah- "I survived this long without problems so i might as well wait longer to reinstate my insurance"...

See, this is shit. My payment, sent automatically every month, didn't make it last month. No one told us. Never happened before. 1/x
-
First notice was a cancellation letter in the mail. When I called to ask what was going on they told me they don't send a notice of 2/x
-
Missed payment. They told me my notice should have been being denied when I went to pharmacy to pick up my medication. Luckily we were 3/x
-
able to reinstate because we had never missed a payment before. We were at the mercy of the insurer to decide this. If not, would have 4/x
-
had to wait until open enrollment. 6 months without insurance is absurd. I pay a $6500 deductible, already paid this year for surgery 5/x
-
If they had cancelled our insurance we would be out the $6500, uninsured for 6 mos, and out of pocket for med expenses already cleared. 6/6
-
And you can bet that mercy would have been much less forthcoming if you had serious illness at the time...
-
Maybe true. I'm healthy & they told me they would "probably" reinstate bc I'd never missed payment b4, but wasnt certain. Its absurd.

Is there any need to do this except for abject cruelty?
-
I'm pretty sure it's to try to avoid people buying insurance only when they get sick. It's the replacement for the ACA's mandate.
-
Ahhh. That makes some twisted sense. But again, it’ll penalize people at the bottom of the economic ladder.
-
Naturally.
-
I'm no health policy expert, but wouldn't this be counterproductive to the "death spiral" effect? It could push money out of the system.
-
The punitive effect may be marginally better than nothing, in terms of keeping ppl on insurance rolls. But the punishment drives $ out.
