Rand Paul said the only reason Capitol Police were there and able to take down gunman was because of Scalise's ranking and required protection. Thinks they all would have been shot if that had not been the case.

Violence outside of politics doesn't lead to good places... except, maybe, the ring or octagon.
E. I get that combat sports, and even the violence of other sports has its cons, too. The only reason I would propose them as more acceptable is due to their voluntary nature. And even that comes with its caveats.

To be fair, in episode IV when escaping from the death star, the imperials wanted them to believe they barely got away, since they had a tracker on the falcon, which then lead them directly to the rebel base.
Rest of the movies, no excuse.
Edit: excuses have been pointed out to me.
Episode V they weren't supposed to kill Luke. Just lead him to Vader.
Episode VI: Ewoks
[–]Batduck 61 ポイント62 ポイント63 ポイント 9日前 (24子コメント)
No, in Empire they were under strict orders not to kill Luke, just corral him to Vader.
The Battle of Endor was the only time we saw them cutting loose, and it was their underestimation of the natives that lost them that battle, not their shot placement. They actually shot really well in Jedi.
[–]FaceDeer 64 ポイント65 ポイント66 ポイント 9日前 (18子コメント)
We also saw them cutting loose in the assault on the Rebel base on Hoth, and the Rebels never even thought about stopping them - it was pure "holy shit, sacrifice your lives to maybe slow them down a bit so we can fleeeeeee."
It's ironic that many fans make the same mistake the Imperials did about the Ewoks and mock them as being "teddy bears" that should have been an easy fight. Ewoks are murder bears, cannibalistic savages who live on a hell-world rife with predators many times their size (that they still routinely hunt for food). A hunting band sprung a successful ambush on an elite Rebel strike force (including a Jedi) without even knowing what they were up against.
[–]beefprime 36 ポイント37 ポイント38 ポイント 9日前 (8子コメント)
Dont forget the scenes that started it all, where the empire absolutely btfo's the crew of the Tantive IV
And AMEN about the Ewoks, one look into their cold, dead eyes should reveal to all the soulless murder machines that they really are.

I don't know if this is what they meant, but in the Army, a 'deliberate' attack means it was pre-planned and coordinated based on solid intel and developed engagement areas, as opposed to a 'hasty' attack, which develops out of a fluid situation, where knowledge of the enemy isn't as solid. Both are intentional, so it's somewhat different from the colloquial meaning of the word 'deliberate.' His reponse is pretty funny, though

Did they say if he has passed away or not? I hope everyone survives...
I don't know what kind of gun was used, I'm just posting what comes from the news.
Edit: Thank you for your replies, I know now that he has been shot in the hip and that so far there are no fatalities. I hope nobody dies.
2nd edit: I now know that Scalise has been transported to the hospital. Congressman Mo Brooks on the phone stated that this was a rifle, not a shotgun, and when asked if the attack was deliberate responded with "well it sure as hell wasn't an accident".
3rd edit: CNN reports that the gunman is in custody and there was some minor security on site, since Scalise was majority whip.
4th edit: "The gunfire just never seemed to stop" - Mo Brooks. He says that they tried to protect themselves and hide from the gunfire during the baseball game. "People from all over the country are not only expressing their regret about this (...) but also want to know if you're all okay" - CNN Reporter.
5th edit: Steve is okay according to Sen. Jeff Flake, who also mentioned that someone's ten year old son was caught in the gunfire but appears to have no injuries. Shit's fucked up. (Edit: Congressman Joe Barden's son)
6th edit: Formatting.
7th edit: Sen. Jeff Flake says that someone (I didn't hear who) was shot in the chest. I hope that this doesn't lead to a fatality.
8th edit: Sen. Jeff Flake personally called Scalise's wife to let her know what happened and he hopes that he will be okay. The weapon was an M4 assault rifle. Edit: /u/RazorFang has corrected me, and says that "the M4 is the military version capable of select fire and unavailable for citizen ownership.... An Automatic weapon was not used in this. It was an AR-15 basically same gun but no select fire and a longer barrel." Edit again: Never mind, it actually IS an M4 according to CBSN. I have no idea what was used.
9th edit: Trump's tweet on this: "Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with him." Link
10th edit: Alexandria Police Department reports in short interview that five people have been transported away with medical transport, says that there will be a press conference in about an hour anda half. Took no further questions at this time.
11th edit: CBS states that Scalise, once shot in the hip, tried to "drag himself to safety". Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R), former military medic (edit: battlefield surgeon), tended to Scalise before ambulance showed up. Says "It felt like I was back in Iraq".
12th edit: Vice President Mike Pence, who knows Scalise, tweeted "Karen & I are praying for @SteveScalise, the Capitol Police, & all hurt for a speedy recovery. Our hearts are with them & their loved ones." Link
13th edit: CBS reports that they have recieved a statement claiming that Scalise is "badly hurt but will fully recover", they call this the most definitive statement about his health so far.
14th edit: Perpetrator is a "middle aged white male" according to Sen. Flake, has left behind clothing (?) on the ground by the baseball field, had a pistol AND assault weapon edit: rifle.
15th edit: "No links to terrorism but the investigation is ongoing" - CBSN. I disagree with this, it's def terrorism.
16th edit: The gunman is now reported to be in custody as stated by BBC which shows that he is not dead according to other sources. Edit: He is dead.
17th edit: Rep. Tom Rooney (R) on the phone with CBS states that he doesn't know if Scalise was being targeted or not and that he was shaken since he had just minutes prior dropped off his kids at school.
18th edit: Rep. Tom Rooney (R) just began crying it sounded like during the phone call. Talked about his wife getting a sleep-in morning, his kids and how you don't think you need the security until you do. Says that Scalise is a happy-go-lucky guy (...), smiling and joking around (...), if his detail wouldn't have been there (...) "I don't know what would have happened."
19th edit: CBS stated that the gunman is in the hospital too, I think? I didn't quite hear, can anyone fill me in?
20th edit: For those of you only tuning in now, all this happened at edit: the practice game for a yearly baseball game arranged to show good will and bipartisanship (also charity for children's literacy agencies) and had many politicians attending to play. This was the republicans' practice field. The gunman showed up and began shooting many rounds, causing people to throw themselves to the ground and try to find shelter. Scalise was shot in the hip along with four other people, who are all transported to the hospital and so far there are no casualties fatalities. The gunman has been arrested.
21st edit: Congressman Evan Jenkins says that there will be "a silent moment" for those affected. Scalise was in "good spirits" prior to entering surgery and has spoken to his wife on the phone.
Right now there's not that much going on, and I have to stop updating for a while because I'm getting super hungry. Thank you all for your replies, I hope that this summary helped you. I'll let you know more if there's something urgent.
22nd edit: Sen. Flake says that there are six shot, CBSN says that the rifle used is indeed an M4 assault carbine and that it can take a while to find out where the weapon was illegally purchased. The FBI is at the scene.
23rd edit: The gunman apparently walked up and asked whether they were republicans or democrats before shooting according to Fox News.
/u/charging_bull showed me sources that disproves this.
This has been disputed by a few sources at this time and other networks are refusing to run it.
For example: Hadas Gold at Politico notes:
We do NOT know whether the guy who asked whether the players were Dems or R’s was the shooter, despite what every1 is reporting
and MSNBC's John Barro
As @AlanMCole notes, Jeff Duncan says the man who asked him about party affiliation was in running clothes, Flake says shooter wore jeans.
24th edit: Sen. Rand Paul (R, Kentucky) says that the bullets were flying everywhere and that the dirt exploded from the shots. Says that it was very dramatic and that he now experiences sadness. He wishes everyone well.
25th edit: Guys, all the stuff about the weapon that the gunman was using isn't word coming from me. I am only posting what I get from the news, and I have no idea about anything that is gun-related. Also, my first language isn't English, so I'm sorry that there are mistakes which may cause misunderstandings.
26th edit: FBI agent Slate says that they brought their response squad, took the lead once they found out that a congressman was involved. The Governor of Virginia says next that he is proud of everyone's efforts and that this is tragic. Agent Slate goes on with taking questions: "It is too early to say" whether or not this was a terrorist attack or a targeted event, says they are "exploring all angles". Says that they are beginning to "narrow down on the identity of the shooter". Slater says that he doesn't know what kind of weapon was used by the shooter.
27th edit: Agent Slate neither denies nor confirms how many were transported to hospital, and doesn't say whether or not one of them may have been the shooter. Police Chief Michael Brown states that "five people were transported to hospital". Doesn't deny or confirm what other sources are saying. Governor, when asked about whether or not area was safe and additional threats, responds with saying "we did not believe anything like this would occur". Keeps going, "Too many guns on the streets, we lose (...) americans to gun violence. (...) I talk about this every single day (...) we just buried one of our agents the other day (...) with wife and children" [he was shot].
28th edit: Scalise is out of surgery according to CBS.
29th edit: The gunman has been identified: James T. Hodgkinson, 66yrs old, owns a home inspection business, from Belleville, Illinois. See this article from the Telegraph.
30th edit: CBS are still saying that it's an M4 assault rifle/assault carbine. I don't know what to believe, lots of you are saying that this can't be the gun he used, but others are speculating that he managed to get a hold on it anyway. I don't know what was used, I'm only reiterating.
31st edit: I'm going to take a break from editing this post for a while. If new information pops up I'll try to put it in, but for now I'm going to leave you with that we have here so far. Thank you for the gold, /u/Nautis! Much obliged! Lastly, I just want to remind everyone that none of what is stated above is my own personal opinion, and I'm not trying to push any agenda. This is all stuff I've gotten from various news sources. I hope you all have a good day.
32nd edit: Trump has now announced that the shooter is dead. Furthermore, /u/charging_bull contributed again:
It looks like the man who asked may have been the shooter after all, via Jeremy Diamond:
Reps. DeSantis and Duncan both saying they believe man who asked them "Republicans or Democrats?" was indeed shooter (...).
33rd edit: Gunman was Bernie supporter/anti-Trump. I'm out of chars.

Says 2 people appeared seriously injured; Scalise with the hip wound, and a member of the security detail who he saw being treated. 20-25 members of the team plus armed members of the security detail were there. Shooter is in custody.
EDIT4: Congressman Jeff Duncan had some kind of conversation with the gunman prior to the attack. It is now being called a deliberate attack.
EDIT5: Senator Jeff Flake from Arizona is speaking right now. He believes that the shooter was shot but is still living. The attack "lasted at least 10 minutes." The member of the security detail who took down the shooter was shot in the leg, the second member of the security detail, a female officer, was shot earlier. "Matt was shot in the chest." The shooter was shooting from behind the 3rd base dugout.
EDIT6: Rand Paul is speaking now, he was at the right field batting cage during the attack. He saw Scalise go down at 2nd base. He and a staffer got behind an oak field. "Nobody would have survived without the Capital Hill Police."
EDIT7: Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown is speaking now "5 people were transported medically from the scene." More complete press conference will be held in 1.5 hours.
EDITFinal: It has been 90 minutes since my first post at 8:01 am ET, the news seems to have stabilized, and someone else is making more frequent updates, so I'm signing off. Stay safe everyone.

You are being too kind, the dude is 63.
Edit: I am aware that the shooter has been confirmed to be a now deceased 66 year old. I still wouldn't say that 66 or 63 qualifies as middle aged (unless you're comparing them to Strom Thurmand).

a few years ago when i lived in the city a bunch of Ethopians gangsters (according to the police) got into a gun battle a few blocks from my house. They found 32 bullet holes, no one was injured. After years of playing videogames and watching movies it always blows me away that it seems like it can actually be pretty fucking tricky to hit anything. i mean i just watched that video from not too long ago where like 3 cops opened up on this 18 year old kid who pulled a gun, and you would think that'd be instant death but the guy was able to get up and run away, albeit not very far.
anyway, hopefully everyone gets through it, sounds like it so far
[–]MudStank 103 ポイント104 ポイント105 ポイント 9日前 (59子コメント)
People also suck at shooting unless they practice. It's not like video games where you can look down a steady sight and shoot. You are going to be shaking like a mad man and the gun is heavy as fuck. To be honest, your best bet at shooting is not standing or crouching, it's resting the foregrip on something and popping off shots that way.

I'm hearing around 14 on NBC. Fifty would require multiple magazines.
EDIT: OK guys, thank you all, I have been made aware dozens of times now that there are more than 30 round mags (For the record, I knew that already) and don't need people to keep telling me that. I don't mean that snarkily, I just wanted to let people know they don't need to keep chiming in.
Also, it's clear now that it was, in fact, dozens and dozens of rounds. I've seen the video. It was clearly a hellofa firefight, and those two cops, especially the one that kept shooting AFTER SHE WAS DOWNED, are fucking heroes. Everyone was. Mo Brooks was a boss. I don't much like Republican politics right now, but I'll say this: That man did what many wouldn't have the capability to do. He kept it together and hopefully saved his buddy's life. He is similarly a hero.

Deliberately targeting elected officials for violence - ultimately it depends on your definition of terror, but this certainly seems to qualify.
The rationale being that acts of terror are attempts to sway policy through violent means.
There's a persuasive argument to be made here that the targets themselves define this act of violence as terror, unless it was a personal disagreement between individuals, which seems unlikely.
Edit: There's quite a few people debating about definitions of terror and why it matters. My point here was to highlight something that could potentially be terrorism, but isn't necessarily something we always see as terrorism. Terrorism is something that I think is poorly understood across society as a whole. I deal in academic definitions, not legal, hence some differences in opinion.
It also has nothing to do with my personal politics whatsoever. I made this point when we knew nothing beyond a single shooter targeting Republicans - I would have said the same if it were Democrats targeted.

The tribalism is boiling over in this country, and even a violent incident like this, which in the past would bring us together and allow us to forget their differences for just a second is just causing more divisiveness and anger. I want to bring up Malcolm Gladwell on the topic of contagious ideas.
In short, Gladwell discusses an island where suicides per year were effectively zero. Shortly after a popular high school student kills himself, the number of annual suicides sky rocket. This trend is seen in violence and negative behaviors like racism as well.
I'm going to predict that this isn't the only time we see direct violent action against congress. There is a lot of hate towards these people. A lot of people feel a lack of empowerment to make any change, and they feel cheated by these people.
And now someone has shot a GOP leader, and you can be sure everyone will know about it.
EDIT: I want to thank all of you who responded for being open to conversation on a really sensitive topic without getting emotional and aggressive. Seriously, you're the type of people we need now. Keep it up.

Assassination attempts have been happening since the start of time. This isn't new.

Oh god this won't help anything. Get ready for intense politicization of this

This was an attack on members of our political system. It's political by it's very nature.

I hate that news of shootings are so routine for me now that my reaction isn't "Oh no! I hope everyone is ok!" Instead it's "Great. What liberties will they attempt to take from us this time using this as an excuse?" and "How will they try to spin this one?"
It really chews dong that "Oh no! I hope everyone is ok!" has been shoved down to like 4th or 5th in order of immediately occurring thoughts.

Say what you want, but in situations like this, the inevitable collateral victims are innocent people who are targeted for deeper and deeper cuts into their civil liberties.

That or people now saying yeah well I don't have sympathy because the people shot were Republicans...well I'm a staunch democrat but I also recognize that politicians are people with families. I would never wish for someone to be assassinated just because they had different views.

Wow, it's almost as if publicly condoning violence against people you disagree with politically, all over every media outlet, is a really really bad idea.

I'm fearing more of this is going to happen. We're in a very dark place. People are desperate and confused.

As someone who voted for Sanders in the primary and volunteered for him, Fuck This Guy. Just another fucking moron who will damage his own "beliefs" more than anyone who opposes him. Those I oppose politically will get more ammunition out of this than almost any other possible thing and it will be an amazing distraction from all of the bad shit they are doing and going to do. They are now going to be near martyrs and any attempts at opposing them will immediately be deflected with a reference to this singularly stupid act. I don't know if he was mentally ill or what but only a stupid or mentally ill extremist thinks this could do anything whatsoever for his cause. I've seen conflicting reports as to whether the guy is alive or not, I hope he lives just to have to see how much damage he will have caused. If it seems that all I care about is politics it isn't, I care about the lives of people I disagree with even if I think they are harming the country and many people, thankfully none of them died so I can focus my anger on how fucking stupid this stupid motherfucker was.

Some of these comments are about as shit as you can get.
If you think its a WIN that a politician you disagree with got shot over his political beliefs, you have some solid fucking issues.
