My mother has severe schizophrenia. She is 64 now and most anti-psychotics don't seem to work on her any more. Are there any amazing new schizophrenia drugs that might work better? BTW, I won't be offended at all if you don't want to answer this!

If other schizophrenia drugs fail and someone really needs help, clozapine is the last-line treatment. It is very effective but also has more side effects than anything else. Sometimes the trade-off is worth it.

Minocycline is an antibiotic that has been found to attack schizophrenia symptoms that are otherwise difficult to treat. I wrote a little about it in Part III here. Your psychiatrist may or may not have heard of it in this context, but it is a pretty safe and well-known medication and may be worth a try if you can get it.

Sodium nitroprusside is a very exciting experimental treatment, but it is still heavily under investigation. Wait a couple of years, or see if you can sign up for a clinical trial.

moteinthedark might know of stranger things I haven’t learned about yet.
