Seriously, why do these yahoos keep trying to revive the Bubsy franchise? Who asked for this? What conceivable target audience are they aiming for?
You know that joke going around that Bubsy was going to be in Sonic Forces?
I don’t think that was a joke at first. I think SEGA thought it would be a good idea, and then backed out at some point and replaced it with the character creation. Originally it was going to be some sort of “Sonic’s had a troubled past, but this guy makes him look like Mario”
And then the Bubsy owners had the assets for a Bubsy model, enemy sprites, and possibly even some maps.
So they did what Bubsy does and slap-dashed together a half-assed game to market it towards the ironic memers crowd.
I’m not sure that in the dilemma “revive Bubsy” vs “let players make their own OCs” Sega would try the former first.
I mean if it was any other company I would agree 100%.
But have you seen SEGA lately? Did you see their 25th anniversary livestream? Did you see Sonic BOOM? These people have no idea what they’re doing.
I’m not saying this is likely, but I think it might be within the realm of the possible.
Sonic Boom was outsourced to incompetents, but the cartoon is considered high quality and highly aware or fandom stuff.
Why would they decide against character creation if not for “that would be way too much money and I do not think we are ready”.
