Economists need to understand that many Americans can only think about economic issues through the lens of racial resentment.

The couple complained that black people get jobs "just so they can get EITC". I pointed out that the point of EITC is to incentivize work.
 -

..."But they're working only just enough to get the benefit," the lady insisted. I pointed out that EITC starts at 0 and scales linearly...
 -

...They had no idea what I was talking about. They could only think about govt benefits as something to be gamed unfairly (by black people).
 -

The couple also complained about healthy black people going on disability. Again, they brought up race totally un-prompted.
 -

The belief that black ppl are moochers and that govt benefits = racial redistribution is irrevocably embedded in some Americans' worldview.
 -

This belief is *central* to much of America's political economy, and will only be lessened, if at all, by generational change. (end)

Oh, and before you snark...No, I did not just realize this fact today. I grew up in Texas. This story was just a good illustration.
 -

BTW, I hear this book is good for anecdotes of racial resentment on the American right: https://www.amazon.com/Strangers-Their-Own-Land-Mourning/dp/1620972255 … I just bought a copy.

these people are demented racists.
 -

Yeah, and?
 -

indeed. not sure they're within normal, non violent political means to deal with...
 -

You're gonna shoot people for being racist??
 -

no, not for being racist. Problem is Noah, when normal politics fails what then? Where does the USA go to deal with millions of armed loons?
 -

I mean, if ppl engage in armed revolt or other violence, the govt shoots them. But this couple isn't violent to my knowledge.
 -

Will a US military and police heavily heavily infiltrated with alt-right members support suppression of alt-right violence?
 -

What evidence do we have of this infiltration??
