By default, I am suspicious of all youtube "journalists." I know we're kind of approaching a crisis here where everyone is suspicious of journalism and main stream media, but situations like this are why journalists have to go to school for the subject and meet editorial standards. Those things exist for a reason.

Without them, you get things like this video, which claims that Brilliant Earth doesn't track their diamonds without any real proof and without even asking Brilliant Earth how they track their diamonds.

I didn't watch the video, and I left the thread when I read that the guy didn't want to hire a lawyer. If that's the case, then Brilliant Earth has an incredibly easy case on their hands.

I want to turn this into copypasta and paste it all over reddit. It's getting quite annoying seeing in every comments section in news-related subs people complain about the state of journalism as if they can do better, or even know how. And I used to watch Philip DeFranco on YouTube, but both he and his audience have become insufferable. The dude is a random person with no formal training who reads the same collection of articles we all do (same articles some say is bad journalism according to the great minds of Reddit) and regurgitates it to a video camera, but people hail him as the gold standard of unbiased proper journalism.

I want to believe this is just a phase since the average redditor and YouTuber is young.

The last 5-7 years of internet journalism, with both the good and the bad, has made me think that maybe paid newspapers do have a place in society. The websites for the news companies aren't great, but I remember the newspapers themselves were actually pretty good.

[–]slippin_squid 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Isn't there more of an art to writing for a newspaper?

[–]catchabadone 9 ポイント10 ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'd wager his viewers skew young just by the nature of youtube but I do think it sets a bad precedent for them. He tries to sell himself as neutral in basically the worst way possible.

I I unsubscribed from PD after 8 years of watching him. He's started to mix a bit too close with the alt right crowd.

[–]PM_Me_PS_Store_Codes 5 ポイント6 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Same. And the official Reddit sub has basically become an offshoot of the-d depending on the post topic.

[–]tick_tock_clock 5 ポイント6 ポイント  (2子コメント)

This seems to happen to a lot of Youtubers. Do you know if there's a reason it happens, or are they coincidences?

[–]DaedalusMinionRespected 'Le' Powermod 4 ポイント5 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Do you know if there's a reason it happens

Since most communities are built on some form of pandering, alt-right is really hot right now. So that's what they're doing.

[–]True_Jack_FalstaffCatgirls is an expression of misogynist objectification 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (0子コメント)

They flock to any YouTuber who will pander to them regardless of whether or not the YouTuber really is alt-right. Dave Rubin for example. His audience flipped shit the other day when he interviewed a rabbi.

The most annoying thing is all the people on reddit who bitch about any story with anonymous sources being fake news.

They don't seem to understand how journalists typically approach anonymous sourcing, and they aren't basing the story of what a single random dude told them in an alley behind Chilis.

Youtube forces anyone who wants to make their money off that platform to intentionally skew an aim ONLY at 13 and younger demos because that's what their ad network wants to play.

So every youtube celebrity who makes their money primarily off the site is not only INTENTIONALLY aiming content in that direction, but they are also listening to years of feedback and metrics that tell them to direct content that way.

If you ever wondered why Youtube has a "Dumbifying" effect after someone starts taking off? Why their videos get shorter, more click baity? There's literally youtube academies and resources that start adverising themselves to you, the content maker, that teach you how to best "get views/money/followers."

In reality, all they do is teach you how to become an ad mill for them. And anyone on Youtube who wants to make more money from that source is going to follow those lessons. Because they work.

Until Youtube changes it's relationship with advertisers and content creators, this will ALWAYS be the end effect. There can't be any other economic outcome.

[–]Garethp 6 ポイント7 ポイント  (0子コメント)

YouTube doesn't force anyone to do anything. The allow advertisers to bid on showing an ad to a certain user based on their demographics, and the 13 year old demographic has generally been the most valuable one for advertisers for decades, long before YouTube came.

Also, there are tonnes and tonnes of content aimed at older audience. Just because all of what you watch is aimed at teenagers, doesn't mean it all is. There's space for creators among many demographics, but the teenage demographic has been the most profitable one for decades, and it's not going to change soon.

It's almost like people do it for a living.

[–]Tiredofnotbeingright 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Lots of people do it for a living without turning it into the kind of factory work I'm describing, that Youtube encourages.

Great name, by and by.

The issue is that the large news conglomerations are all ruled by ownership interests, not that their methods are poor. It's lack of open competition which stifles inventiveness and difference of opinion. For example, political one-liners are good for business, even if giving them coverage is damaging to the integrity of politics. Criticizing subsidieries of the parent company is never going to happen. For example NBC is literally owned by Comcast. Why do you think the issue of monopolization never gets raised? Monopolies own the communication channels. To be clear, I'm agreeing with you. I don't think all mainstream journalism is bad. I think some of it is unimportant drivel, but trained professionals are such for a reason.

What we really need to see is professionals splitting off to spearhead their own independent networks. I'd like to see a Keith Olbermann effect, or maybe something where an older, established and experienced journalist leaves a network to start his own show with a group of young, well-trained professionals. Basically if The Young Turks had guidance from someone who knew what they were doing. Then you'd have incredibly personal flavor to the news reporting and no conflict of interest ala parent companies (assuming independent ownership).

Still one of the dumbest things I have ever read. I have played a lot of video games, and my constant mashing of the r key and the left mouse button tells me I am not prepared to use an assault rifle. The reload animation is in progress, and I am trying to spam the trigger. I would be so awful in World War Sheep Farm Invasion.

I hide all my blood diamonds in the honeycomb of my purplish colored mattress. The carcinogenic dust keeps them from the prying eyes of reddit lawyers.

For real though, Hollywood should be snatching these stories up. I watched them unfurl, and I would still watch the movie.

Edit: My AMA

Maybe I'm unclear on how AMA works, and they verify literally every AMA done, but I'm not really seeing it from the linked thread. I don't really have a reason to doubt his stated expertise, but once we're in this kind of he said/she said situation, it'd be nice to have more than "yes I am in fact an expert.

It's just something odd to me about reddit where someone claiming to be an expert is usually believed if what they're saying conforms to the narrative or counter-narrative of the users.
