I think this is used by genderfluid people? It's nasty and gross. There's a store nearby that sells party supplies. All of it is gender segregated, but there is a particular aisle that is divided into two halves: the left half is blue with super heroes, trucks and sports; turn to your right and the other side is pink with princesses and dolls. That's what "boy mode" and "girl mode" makes me think of. These people are pivoting in a toy aisle and thinks it changes who they are on a fundamental level.

I think the terms are also used by trans people who aren't out or passing. A trans woman might say they are in boy mode at work where they aren't out to coworkers and in girl mode when they are dressing up/wearing makeup etc in private or with close friends.

I would, I guess, understand it if it was just about mode of presentation (clothes, etc). So many people talk about personality differences, etc, when talking about it though, and that just immediately leads me to dismiss whatever they say as fantasy.

I've seen it mostly from so-called genderfluid people who think you can switch genders back and forth. It actually was part of my peak trans, because it's so obviously sexist.

I'm in GaveUpOnSociety mode 😊 it's a gender 😂 but anyways yeah have heard it as when someone is in public with all their "attempting to present/pass as the opposite sex" gear on.

I wish I could turn off girlmode, btw. Is there a way to install floating spirit mode? I just wanna be a floating spirit with no body or gender.

It's a genderfluid/Queergender/Nonbinary thing.

Fun story - I once had a guy lecture me for misogyny. I was berating him for giving people constant, vivid descriptions of his rape/murder fantasies, and he felt like I was being opressive because he "was in girlmode" at the time. He used to switch them weekly. Pretty hilarious. In an awful way.

I've seen it argued that this contradicts the very idea of Trans itself - if you can change modes, what if this idea that gender is integral and immutable?

From their own mouths:

including this it's-only-fine-when-we-say-it gem

Boymode/girl mode were basically just a change of clothes.

Girlmode for trowelling on the slap and getting giggly on the rosé, boymode for being taken seriously in your career until you're senior enough to "come out" and be the company's first woman CEO and/or to get your GF down the aisle and pregnant so that she's trapped when you surprise her with your male lesbianism. /cynicism

I think it gives an interesting insight, actually, irritating as it is. You could liken it to the "fake it 'til you make it" mantra in self-help circles - acknowledging that there is a learning curve to presenting as the other gender, and (shocker!) it's not all innate.

It would be less creepy if they said women mode.

Sex is a mode? Only in a fevered brain.
