They were, but then they did a lot of drugs and started doing really interesting music.

Plus they played their own instruments, so...

And one direction sang their own songs (which btw isn't as simple as you may think. A singers body is an instrument that is so easily and constantly fucked up by everything from nerves to humidity levels). I mean I'm not a fan of either but it's time we stopped acting like the Beatles were special instead of a good band which is all they were.

...Who were hugely influential on more genres of music than you can even count.

I'm sorry but did one direction bring a whole genre of music out from general obscurity to defining a generation?

Idk but I'm not sure the Beatles are solely responsible for that either.

They're not solely responsible but they played a bigger role than one direction. Think of bAck street boys or similar things. They had an influence but they did shake things up like the Beatles and their contemporaries

It really depends on your definition of a boy band, doesn't it? If it's just "young guys who sing songs that appeal to teenage girls" then yes, the Beatles fit that bill early in their career.

If your definition is "singing group assembled by a label who don't write their own songs or play their own instruments and their music is specifically marketed to teenage girls" then the Beatles don't fit that bill.

I tend to go with the stricter definition, with room for variation. You could consider the Jackson 5 or the Osmond's boy bands even though they were families and not put together by a label.
