I really think the way America talks about "Innocent until proven guilty" is harmful.

You are not innocent until proven guilty. You are innocent if you didn't do it, and guilty if you did. But the state should presume your innocence for state purposes. They should treat you like an innocent person. Because the state's response to your guilt is to lock you in a cage, or steal your things, or kill you. These are drastic involuntary responses, that in other contexts would themselves be criminal.

But most people are not the state, and do not plan to gun Bill Cosby down in the street. My opinions don't require the same burden of proof as a state execution.

It's also important to note that a court of law doesn't really use the term innocent - defendants are either found guilty or not guilty, and while people sometimes assume "not guilty" means the same thing as innocent it does not.

It's fucking OJ Simpson all over again.

Why can't the courts just make a new law simply saying rich people are never guilty?

"allegedly" [+20]

In reply to afternoonofthefaun on "Bill Cosby does the absolute strangest thing ever while leaving court":

I think raping people goes a few steps beyond "filthy".

Most people have done "filthy" shit but rape? That's evil.
