"My privilege lets me be willfully ignorant of the differences in culture and disadvantages faced by certain groups"

When I was young and dumb, I genuinely thought this. Now I just think "fucking hell, they're people! Wonderful, different, sometimes awful, people."

What's wrong with actively trying to surpress your inherent biases and try to treat everyone as an individual and not make judgments on them based on race or gender? Isn't that the society we want to live in, where people's race and gender truly do not matter?

the problem is that willful ignorance is not the solution to social issues. that leads to people feeling as if their identity is being glossed over and homogenizes them. differences should be celebrated and not ignored

Oh I don't mean completely ignoring differences, I mean as far as shit that matters.
Like, don't make assumptions about people because of their race/gender. Don't give anyone special treatment. That kind of thing.

sure thing, but thats not really what these people mean. in this particular case, the guy who said this was using it as an excuse to say the n word lol

Maybe people think that the only thing worse than socialized racism is institutionalized racism.

Yeah, I personally examined my brain, found the switch labeled "Racial Prejudice" and the other switch labeled "Gender-based Prejudice" and flipped both to 'no', so now I'm completely race and gender blind.
It's a good thing the human brain is a perfect machine with clearly labeled settings, or else my claim of being race/gender blind might really be blinding me to my own biases. Nope! Now that's I've declared myself blind to racial and gender differences, I have no further need to examine my opinions or stay constantly vigilant for the possibility that I am still unconsciously guided by built-in societal biases.
Less sarcastically and more straightforwardly: People who say they don't 'see' race or gender may be actively and reflexively checking their opinions on people to account for such biases, but often you'll see that exactly the opposite is true: A person who announces their blindness, having decided they are neither racist nor sexist, takes offense if it is ever suggested that they could do anything racist or sexist even by accident.

they choose not to judge someone based on these factors but rather judge them on their character.
You can choose to breathe underwater, doesn't make it so.
What would you say if I told you I "don't see economic class"? Would you think I treat every hobo exactly the same way I treat a millionaire? Or would you think I'm full of shit?

Another point on this: people like this tend to use the word 'character' when what they really mean is 'achievement.' Ben Carson is their perfect example of this, but his character is horrible! He wants to take food stamps and affordable housing from people who need it... but he has 'character' because he's an accomplished brain surgeon.
In truth, besisdes the fact that they are also subconsciously judging people by their color, they are not even judging somene by their character, they're judging them by how successful they are financially or socially.

Black people not being as nice to you (that is implied in your comments) might have something to do with them being subject to one of the most brutal systems of slavery in history for 300+ years, with discrimination still enduring today.

I'm sure you talk to every homeless person that wanders into your place of work to find out the caliber of their character.
You could have argued that race blindness is not the same as socioeconomic status blindness, but instead you chose to feed me that heaping spoonful of thought-terminating bs.
