I'll begin by appreciating /r/exmuslim of the past, which was a great place with near-absolute free speech and little censorship. Then one day, the most active moderator /u/agentvoid left for unknown reasons, and shit hit the fan when /u/ONE_deedat made a come back.
/u/ONE_deedat began censoring all the opinions he disliked. It began with him banning any threads that were pro-gay or where gay people complained about their plight in Islamic societies and Muslims' behavior towards them. The bans later extended to even straight exmuslims who stood in support of their fellow exmuslims who are gay.
It's one thing to ban. He deletes threads in a way that no one who had participated in a thread would know that the thread was deleted. The links or posts simply disappear from the subreddit.
Exmuslims often come from Islamic countries where having a wrong face expression means a certain death. /u/one_deedat has a habit of quoting people's comments so that they can never delete their comments. The consequences of someone being found out online can range from disowning, violence, forced marriages and even beheadings in some countries.
There's regular discrimination against people of races among which Islam is a minority. Sometimes it is poisonous vitrol and other times /u/ONE_deedat endorses opinions and ultimatums for such groups. As a gay exmuslim, I oppose any discrimination towards any group.
If you protest or tell other contributers about it, you get silently banned. You're forced to wear a burqa is one way to put it. Some long-term members have left in protest and no one knows about it. The subreddit is exceptionally politically correct now while brigading and trolling are a norm which leads me into believing that many others have been banned but forced to stay invisible. The simpletons in the sub live in a fake bliss of believing that they are in a sub where they can express themselves freely. Politically correct trolls who misbehave are not reprimended. If someone creates a drama on your sub or acts drunk, they will punish you by deleting your thread irregardless of whether you wanted a fruitful or engaging discussion or if you shared a news item.
