I want to know what the deal with setzer77 is. He posts similar stuff but usually a bit more thoughtful. I want to know if he's inspired by grapp, a copycat of sorts, or has his own rationale for posting altogether.

I think it's a Fight Club kind of thing, /u/setzer77 is /u/grapp's Tyler Durden.

It actually involves this crazy transporter accident.

lol, like you are the antimatter grapp that is actually trying to save the world?

[–]GCU Smooth Operator4d2 2 ポイント3 ポイント  (1子コメント)

I suspect that these two accounts are related or grapp is really SC and is experimenting on us all.

I want off grapp's wild ride.

The only part of your post that I agree with is that it would be nice if /u/grapp participated more in discussions, both the ones he starts and the ones started by other people.

So for that matter, I'd have to say it would be nice to see /u/grapp post more, not less. Albeit... more replies to threads than actual threads.

I actually fully agree with you. Many of Grapp's posts would work well if they were contributions to a relevant discussion, rather than stream-of-consciousness posting. As things are, it feels more like Grapp is talking at us, rather than with us.

For those complaining about the signal-to-noise ratio, I challenge you to engage more, start more threads, and participate more in those threads that are here.

We're talking about a niche subreddit for a finite series that's long-ended, so there aren't going to be new injections of content very often. So yes, we're going to see the same types of posts over and over again, and yes, we're going to see quite a bit of our most prolific member.

Ask yourself - what would you like to see here that you're not seeing now? And then try and make that thing happen.

So yes, we're going to see the same types of posts over and over again, and yes, we're going to see quite a bit of our most prolific member.

It'd be nice if our most prolific member actually engaged in discussion here, instead of just spamming the sub with random questions that are answered in the text, frequently in the very passage he's talking about. It ends up making visiting the sub frustrating most days. The fact that he rarely even bothers to engage in the "discussions" his questions cause is just icing on the cake—the behavior is undoubtedly spamming.

I just don't really like that this sub is /r/GrappsCultureSeriesShowerThoughtSpam.

Granted, it does seem like the other idea people usually have is the ever-boring "what if this sci-fi universe faction fought the Culture" and variations thereof.

What I'd like to see is a limit on posts from individual people. You get one a day, excepting news (which there won't be much of, honestly). Grapp can still spam us, just maybe he'll think out his one post for the day rather than spamming easily-answerable questions.

[–]ROU Diplomacy Through Other Meansspatialcircumstances[S] 0 ポイント1 ポイント  (0子コメント)

I'm fully, 100% on the same page. I think a limit of one new topic per day per user would be a very reasonable compromise.

[–]ROU Diplomacy Through Other Meansspatialcircumstances[S] 8 ポイント9 ポイント  (8子コメント)

I do try to post when I have something to contribute, but I don't want more noise to drown out Grapp's. While no one wants a dead subreddit, maybe I'm in the minority with feeling that an occasionally quiet subreddit isn't that bad.

Right now it feels like a dinner party, and a single guest has gotten ahold of a megaphone and is using it to comment on the color of the linens. I've tried to be more circumspect over the past months, but at this point I figured just asking Grapp to put the megaphone down was my best shot.

[–]GOU Overwhelmingly Underestimated (Murderer Class)gatheloc 5 ポイント6 ポイント  (7子コメント)

I disagree about a quiet subreddit being bad. A few years ago this place was fairly empty, with a handful of posts a week.

Now there is fresh contribution almost daily and, while most of it does come from /u/grapp, there is a lot of other discussion also. I much prefer this than a subreddit I forget about because there's never any new content to show up on my frontpage.

can you drop the /u/. I struggle with depression and I'd rather be ignorant of people arguing about me

If it helps, I and I'm sure others like the fact that you spark activity in the sub.

BTW you can turn off whole notification thing on someone mentioning your name in settings. I understand your point.

I don't want to have it off completely, only when I'm being slagged off and I don't want to know

[–]ROU Diplomacy Through Other Meansspatialcircumstances[S] 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (0子コメント)

I hope you know that it isn't my intention to offend. I understand that it's a fine line between helpful criticism and hurtful, and I'm truly trying to stay solidly on the helpful side.

In such a small subreddit, your frequent posts have an outsize impact. I only ask that you focus on quality, not quantity.

The avatar sighs and puts down his cup of coffee, making a note that Mebra was right. It is quite good.

It's quite obvious to me that while Contact operative Banks said he was inspired by the primitive earth computer game 'civilization', really his inspiration was obviously the petty politicking that consumes many Minds.

Obviously writing from experience.

Who cares really? You know. I know. We all know this forum would be nearly dead without 'grapp's involvement.

The simple fact we are all talking here via effector use from tens of light years shows both our weird obsession with Reddit and this backwater planet. And the fact should mark all of us as borderline Eccentric.

Really I'd expect these kind of endless pretty arguments over the proper use of a forum from the Elench.

[–]LSV Please Leave a Message at The Beepsetzer77 1 ポイント2 ポイント  (0子コメント)

How dare you. It's the Culture that gets hung up on notions of "propriety". The Elench just want to experience the infinite diversity of internet forums, and let that diversity change who they are.

Just let him do his thing. Sometimes it's worth it, sometimes it's just not but whatever. I'm actually more sick of grapp-related drama than I am of the guy himself.

I'm fine with the content. But it gets a bit cringy eh?

The enthusiasm of people can be a wonderful thing; but it's also true there's all kinds of ideal tones and intensities for people when it comes to this kind of energy. True, the color of linens is probably not interesting to some, but such details are exactly the things one might need to know to live a little further into the reality of The Culture. It's difficult to fault someone for this; without these characters, there may never be that exploration. And what, formally, constitutes "a shitpost" anyway? Who decides this?

There's a certain sympathy to people preferring a well tidied subreddit, but it seems etiquette and inclusion are closer to Culture values (if those can even be said to exist) than exclusion.

[–]GCU Lightly Seared On The Reality Grillmouthbabies 3 ポイント4 ポイント  (6子コメント)

It's not like you have to engage or even read any of it. It's a public forum about a thing we all love, and a lot of us appreciate grapp's enthusiasm. If you don't like it, downvote away, but a post whining about it is much more jarring and annoying than anything grapp has contributed. If it bothered you so much you could have PM'd grapp and left the rest of us out of it.

[–]GSV Don't Ask Me, I Just Work HereBiscuits0 11 ポイント12 ポイント  (5子コメント)

Two points; One - /u/Grapp's over indulgence has driven people away from this sub. That's a bad thing. Two - I PM'ed Grapp about a month ago asking why doesn't he get more involved with discussions etc., that it would make the sub more active. Had no reply at all. Grapp just dumps his thoughts here and leaves, the only time he comments is to tell you you're wrong when you disagree with him.

please stop putting my user name in posts, I'm trying to ignore this thread. If I was still a mod I'd remove it for being totally un-Culture related

[–]GSV Don't Ask Me, I Just Work HereBiscuits0 13 ポイント14 ポイント  (0子コメント)

Are you serious /u/grapp? A lot of us are thankful you're not a mod anymore, those dark days have left their mark on this sub. You do realise how much you post that isn't Culture related or very loosely related, right? If I was a mod a good quarter of your posts would be removed for being not related or for being low effort.

[–]LowRentMegazord 9 ポイント10 ポイント  (0子コメント)

This is one of the many compelling reasons you aren't anymore.
