It's like a fucking word problem in 3rd grade math.

You have 8 apples and your friend takes 3 but gives back one, how many do you have?

Ans: 6

Teacher: 6 what? clocks? airplanes?

Thanks, but nah, check your work.

I always hated that. Bitch, you know what I meant. Give me my F and let's call it a day.

Units are very important later on in more advanced math, it's laying the ground for that I guess

But it answers the question. If I ask a question with units already in it ("how many apples do you have?"), then just giving the number answer (6) is correct. The question implies that the answer is in apples. Other questions need units. Such as "how fast is the object moving?" "x mi/hr, ft/s, m/s, etc"

I have to come at this every time some wasteman posts it. He means real as in "for real"/"be real", meaning honestly/be honest. I.e How can mirrors give us a teue reflection of ourselves if we don't view ourselves honestly. Shouldn't have to keep explaining this on bpt ffs

Because it's still pseudo-philosophical, childish nonsense. Yeah, people should lay off of him because we've all had some pants on head "deep" thoughts, especially when we were teenagers who thought we were smarter than we actually were, but there's no reason to get pissy that people still think it's stupid, even if they knew what he meant.

there's no reason to get pissy that people still think it's stupid, even if they knew what he meant.

I think that's the key issue. I certainly didn't know what he meant, I just assumed he was your garden-variety Hollywood/Scientology crazy. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that I'm not the only one. So I'm thankful for mousestache23's explanation.

everything is a thing if you make it one

It is weird. Not necessarily offensive on its own. It's just like when someone uses an esoteric word to describe something, especially since female/male are usually used as adjectives. Makes you almost wait for a word that's missing. "I saw a female bluebird the other day" sounds more natural than "I saw a female the other day".

It's also associated with derogatory terms and Nice GuysTM. If some rando said "I appreciate males for more than just dick" isn't that a little weird?

Me too, holy shit. I'm over here thinking "shit, don't call a woman female anymore" What type of world are we living where this is offensive now smh

It's not offensive. It's just kinda cringy.

Some mouth breathers on the internet started talking about women like their narrating Planet Earth. Saying females this, females that. The word has taken on a weird "outside looking in" slant that no one wants to touch. I'm never offended when I see "female". I just think that the person using it only sees a woman when his mom brings pizza bagels down to the basement. But I'm not rustled at all.

To be fair, I feel like while we[normal, non-sexist people] use the word female often, but never really use it in a way that people are describing as offensive? I'm trying to wrap my head around it because this is the first time I'm hearing about this too, but people don't tend to actually call women females, like saying "Oh, I met a really nice female today," or "Check out that female, she's so gorgeous!" or whatnot, rather we use the term female as a descriptor relatively often, so it SEEMS like this would be absolutely ridiculous, but it might not be if people who actually do use female as an insulting term have already done the damage with using it as a noun.

That said, I think people are being silly assuming that using the word female in the way Jaden used it is always a bad thing/awkward. It seems fine to me, just an odd word choice-- there was nothing negative about it in connotation, so it kind of bugs me how people are getting up in arms.

Well I'm on a military base right now so I'd guess 99% of the females I would ask would say yes because they all went to boot camp.

"MALES ON THE LEFT FEMALES ON THE RIGHT, FUCKING HURRY UP".

Which was totally fair for both genders. They sometimes said "good job females you didn't fuck it up like the males did" when it came to inspections so there was a more positive note for the females on that one.

Which was totally fair for both genders.

This seems like a completely different case, and I agree with you. I think part of the military is depersonalization? Right? more solider than other identification? More of a unit than an individual.

Men tend to not be referred to as "males" in non-scientific discussions, but women are. In this case it's not, but a lot of the time it is used while making derogatory comments about women. So it's often an indicator that a shitty comment is about to follow.

Edit: You guuuuyys. I love this sub. I was all concerned I'd get downvoted (b/c he other day somewhere I did a similar "facty" comment about gender stuff and people did not like it).

Sorta, I mean we do have shit like: Male privilege, Male gaze, Male oppression, White male etc.

I think "female" is used less as a derogatory term in the white community, and more in the black one. Most sexist white guys simply use "women". However, everyone uses "bitches".

I see "females" all over on reddit. The main issue for me is "male privilege, male gaze" are all using male as a adjective. Referring to women as "females" is using it as a noun

That is correct, male and female should be used as adjectives. Male privilege, female dog, etc. Man and woman are exclusive nouns for just humans.

Male in this context is an adjective

you can't really "men gaze", right?

Female is fine as an adjective, it's only obnoxious as a noun outside of a scientific context ("a female in the car" or "a female passenger")

That's in discussion of social science.

To further this, there is also the term infantilization which is saying things like girl, baby, chick etc. when referring or talking to a grown woman.

Also there is overarching male norms where a phrase trying to encompass both males and females is done while only mentioning men. Such as "mankind" instead of human kind or human race or "you guys" instead of you all or everyone.

My theories of group prejudice social psych class taught me all kinds of little things like this I never thought of before. It was by far my favorite undergrad class.

Mmmhm. It's also patronizing as hell to my eyes. Like women are this distinct species that really needs people like that to come out and extol their virtues because no one else understands, man.

The term 'female' technically refers to any species that has reproductive organs that are responsible for the growth of the fetus.

When you call a human woman a 'female' you are reducing her to only her reproductive function, thereby dehumanizing her. Some men use the word 'female' instead of 'woman' but don't use 'male' with it and it is a way for them to think and speak less of us. It's just insulting to reduce someone down to their genitalia, as if they're nothing else.

Nobody is offended. They're just explaining why something is weird. If you call me "a female" to my face, I, alongside a lot of other women, will silently roll our eyes and move on because its sounds as stupid as someone saying "nucular" instead of "nuclear." Dumb enough to notice, but not at all enough to actually care about it.

What's the difference between "woman" and "female human"?

Female is an adjective. Like black. I've never met a black dude that likes to be referred to as a "black". Same thing for women.

Edit: look guys, I just think referring to people by their only gender or race or any other modifier is a bit dehumanizing. I realize that the term black is a standalone noun is perfectly acceptable, but I would personally limit that to the color. You may feel differently. I'm not personally offended by it, but, I can see where this woman is coming from, as I would see how a black person would be offended by being referred to as a black. I'm not looking for shit to be offended by so chill out, and keep on referring to people by their genitalia or skin tone or whatever one dimensional thing you deem is most important. You do you, I'll do me.

This. Imagine a white dude saying shit like "Blacks are amazing." It's a compliment! You're just making things up to be offended over!

"Italians are amazing"

"Nicaraguans are amazing"

"Males are amazing"

"Goths are amazing"

"Albinos are amazing"

Maybe that last one is a bit weird but I don't think anyone would find any of these dehumanizing, would they? Just seems like such a nitpicky thing to complain about. Some guys do sound creepy when they talk about "females" but to be fair the kind of guy who sounds creepy or weird saying it would be just as creepy saying "ladies" or "girls" or practically anything.

We refer to "women soldiers" as females too.

Go get the females, where are the females, how many females do we have, SSG Smith is a female, etc.

It's a way for us to remain professional and not let there be any connotation when referring to them. (Girls, women, ladies, etc all are either unprofessional or can have a different connotation. Or both.) We also refer to men as "males" too.

When I found out "female" was seen in such a negative light by civilians, I was (and still really am) confused as to how this came to be.

Really confused by this thread, people saying female is derogatory, people saying it's just a word. In the context of statement it is a compliment to gender.

If he said girls it would be an insult, if he said ladies it be an insult, if he said males it would be an insult, but if he says the magic word that this person would prefer to be called then it is fine.

Or maybe this person is being hyper sensitive

Some people aren't satisfied with their day unless they go on social media and look for something to be offended by.

I love AskWomen and TrollX, but I just can't get on board with the being offended at females and I've gotten into it with people angry that I didn't feel that way on there. I call other women females in certain situations myself. Hell, when I'm talking about myself here on the internet where I'm anonymous, I say, "I'm a female".

A lot are offended by "girls" as well. I will never stop calling my peers who don't feel old "girls". If I told my SO, "This woman at the store today did XYZ", he'd immediately picture an older lady. But if I said, "This girl at the store today did XYZ", he'd know without asking that I meant someone around my own age.
