Hello! I just found your blog and I have a question for you. For background, I am Jewish, and there are people in my bloodline who were persecuted by progroms in Russia. Fortunately, some of my family survived, so I am here today.Ok, so I see a lot of people saying on both the internet and in real life who had looked at my skin color (white) and told me that I have no culture, or that I couldn't have ever experienced discrimination. It really hurts to hear this sort of thing, and I never... (1)

… know how to respond. Obviously I experience privileges in life because of my lighter skin color, but that ignores the many years of violence that was and still is directed at us. And it ignores our beautiful culture as well. Similarly, a lot of people laugh when I tell them my heritage is Judaism, and they tell me that it is a religion. I don’t really feel like my heritage is Russian, because our family was chased out of that country due to our Judaism… (2)

…It just doesn’t feel right to tell people that. Anyway, how do you react when someone says this sort of thing? I usually stumble over my words without knowing what to say. Thanks <3 (3)

Oy. Well. Those people are wrong, and pretty obviously so, for the reasons you’ve laid out. Luckily, I have not been in the situation of having to respond to such accusations in real life, and since they’re pretty obviously wrong (like, we can argue about privilege in the current day, but the sorts of statements they’re making are pretty clearly false), they don’t bother me much. If they do bother you (which is valid! That’s your identity they’re denying!), I would recommend that you learn to articulate exactly what you said in your ask. I’m not sure if I can put it better.

I hope that helps! Sorry if it didn’t give you much. Feel free to reach out to me again if I’ve missed the point of your asks.

As always, anyone wanting to send me asks can do so here.
