yes he is that stupid

Once upon a time in 1973, President Richard Nixon was very GRRRR at special prosecutor Archibald Cox, who was getting way too close to nailing him in the Watergate scandal. That was a very unfair thing for Cox to do! So on a Saturday night in October, Nixon told his attorney general, Eliot Richardson, to fire Cox. Richardson was like “EAT ME,” and he resigned in protest. So Nixon told Deputy Attorney General William Ruckleshaus to fire Cox, and Ruckleshaus was like “You can also eat me,” and he too resigned. So Nixon called the solicitor general, Robert Bork, and said “You will fire the mean man, yes?” And Bork said, “Oh sure, I’m a total whore, and also a bad man. I will do the thing!” Of course, everybody went apeshit and Nixon was forced to appoint a new special prosecutor, Leon Jaworski, just a couple weeks later, and the rest is history.

(See? Wonkette can do a historical context opening segment like Rachel Maddow does, TAKE THAT, RACHEL.)

Monday, sentient picnic basket full of dick cheese Newt Gingrich started advancing the idea that Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor in the Trump-Russia investigation, is a terrible witch-hunter who should be fired, because a few members of the (excellent) team Mueller is assembling have donated to Democrats in the past, much like Donald Trump has. Are Democrats even American? Pffffffffft, Newt is not certain. Also, Mueller and James Comey know each other, and even worse, respect each other, therefore Mueller, one of the world’s most respected American public servants, couldn’t POSSIBLY be capable of doing an independent investigation. (For real, this is one of his arguments.) Of course, less than one month ago, Newt tweeted that Robert Mueller is awesome and beyond reproach, which is a true statement.

But it’s not just Newtie! Donald Trump’s BFF Christopher Ruddy, publisher of Newsmax, went on PBS Monday night (reportedly just after leaving the White House) and told Judy Woodruff that Trump was just maybe thinking about firing Mueller:

I think he’s considering, perhaps, terminating the special counsel. I think he’s weighing that option. I think it’s pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently.

Ah yes, Jay Sekulow, another member of Trump’s DREAM TEAM of unqualified lawyers, was on TV on Sunday and wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Trump telling Mueller, “YOU’RE FIRED!”

Ruddy continued by saying he thinks firing Mueller would be a “very significant mistake,” and then listed the reasons why Robert Mueller sucks and shouldn’t be the special prosecutor. He said Trump interviewed Mueller to be FBI director, and it was improper for Mueller to accept the special prosecutor position, since he had just had a private meeting with the president. What if Trump tried to obstruct justice by the pussy IN FRONT OF ROBERT MUELLER? That’s a conflict of interest!

So it sounds like we have a “trial balloon” situation here. House Speaker Paul Ryan told a reporter Tuesday morning that the press is “creating a rumor that doesn’t exist,” which is funny since the rumor came from a Trump lawyer, a Trump BFF and a Trump scrotum-bather. Maybe those crazy asses were sent to float the idea, just to see how people would react. One might understand why Trump would want a trial balloon this time, since he has such poor judgment that he REALLY THOUGHT people would embrace his firing of James Comey.

The trial balloon isn’t going well, by the way. While some Trump-loving morons like Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham think firing Mueller would be just great, Republicans who are still respected by voters capable of putting on pants without inadvertently stabbing themselves in the eye are not reacting so well. In his press conference Tuesday, Paul Ryan said Trump would be “vindicated by allowing this investigation to go on,” and that the “best advice would be to let Robert Mueller do his job.”

Here are some other Republicans, shitting on the idea, via Politico:

“It would be a disaster,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) “There’s no reason to fire Mueller. What’s he done to be fired?” […]

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said the notion firing Mueller, would “certainly be an extraordinarily unwise move.” […]

“I think there’s a lot of confidence in Mueller around here,” added Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) “We’ve all dealt with him.” […]

“He’s a very much trusted individual and had an outstanding record as head of the FBI,” [John] McCain said. […]

“I think Bob Mueller’s as good as you’re going to find. I don’t see any reason to remove him now,” said Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), who has largely defended Trump throughout the investigation into potential Russia ties.

What a buncha goddamn hippies. Bet they all wore pussy hats at the Women’s March.

Of course, many of these Republicans seem to believe in their hearts that Trump is innocent, and that if an esteemed man like Mueller does an investigation, Trump will be shown to be the perfect angel his supporters believe him to be. Trump likely knows differently.

For his part, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein (the guy Trump would actually have to direct to fire Mueller, since Attorney General Jeff Sessions is “recused,” because he’s balls-deep in the Russia investigation) said in Senate testimony Tuesday morning that he is the only one who can actually fire Mueller, and that Trump would have to give him a good goddamn reason:

“I am confident that he has full independence,” Rosenstein said in answer to a question from Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.)

Asked what he would do if the president ordered him to fire Mueller, he said, “I’m not going to follow any orders unless I believe those are lawful and appropriate orders.” […]

“If there were good cause,” I would consider it,” Rosenstein testified. “If there were not good cause, it wouldn’t matter to me what anybody says.”

So either Rosenstein would roll over like a golden retriever because Trump invented a “reason,” or he might volunteer to be the next Eliot Richardson and resign, at which point Trump would have to start going down the chain of command to find somebody to do his bidding. Ooh, we bet Trump is wishin’ he had staffed up all those political Justice Department positions right about now!

Jeff Sessions will obviously be asked about this in his latest perjury fest before the Senate this afternoon. (We’re kidding! Jeff Sessions would never do perjuries!) Though he is nominally “recused” from the Russia investigation, he could always unrecuse himself and follow Daddy’s orders, but then he might find himself in trouble for being a justice-obstructing idiot, just like his boss.

Join us at 2:30 PM ET for our Jeff Sessions liveblog, where we will find out what’s rollin’ around in that little racist brain of his right about now!

My first reaction was “can he do that?” Which, apparently, he can’t. But he can get other people to do the dirty work for him, which is his MO anyways. But I actually think Rosenstein won’t since he reputation was so damaged from the whole Comey firing fiasco. But man, how can anyone not look at this and say “this is DAMN suspicious.” And most of them were around during Nixon.

Obviously I could be wrong – and I’ll find out if I am! – but this seems to me like a lot of Trump-fluffing bullshit. I don’t think Newt or any of these other assholes either thinks Trump will fire Mueller or wants him to. I think they’re saying this so that when Trump doesn’t fire Mueller, it will be seen as an act of transparency and largesse. Which is just the sort of impression they hoped to create when they floated the idea of Trump blocking Comey’s testimony prior to Trump “allowing” it to go forward.

    • Stulexington

Look at me magnanimously not making myself look more guilty like I said I might. I must be innocent.

I agree, but man, Trump is always amazing us with his stupidity. He never sees a smart option and a dumb option and doesn’t choose the dumb option.

    • Covfefe

What’s worse for Donald? The fallout from firing Mueller or letting Mueller complete his investigation?

      • Lance Thrustwell

Well, that’s the question, ain’t it. But I personally think that Trump was shielded from most of the Russia collusion on purpose – and they knew they could do it because he would be too oblivious to notice or care. So the campaign people may get indicted, but Trump himself will squeak through. My gloomy prediction.

      • Stulexington

I can’t wait to find out, since we’ll probably see first one, then someone like Mueller completing the investigation so get to compare.

      • vivian

If DJT fires Mueller, Congress creates a special investigation and appoints Mueller the head of it, so firing Mueller at best gives DJT a couple of extra weeks…

Sen. Christopher A. Coons (D-Del.) asked Rosenstein: Why would the deputy attorney general have written a memo to Sessions that was “exclusively” about a matter from which Sessions was recused?

“I don’t think that’s a question for me to answer,” Rosenstein responded. He later noted that it was up to Mueller to determine whether any of the issues might be part of his investigation, and he thought Mueller “ought to review that.”

I’ve heard of ducking tough questions, but Jesus…

    • vivian

  • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

Trump’s behavior through this whole thing has actually been bizarre. He’s no stranger to white collar shenanigans. Why is he losing his shit?
Either his not guilty of collusion (some of his staff probably are) and just doesn’t understand why he can’t make the whole thing go away. In what passes for his mind, he’s surrounded by incompetents.
He’s done something Monstrous in collusion with Flynn and Sessions and Stone, and maybe others like Kushner, and he’s very frightened.
I can’t figure which one it is.

    • Suttree

He is guilty as hell, and everybody knows it.

      • Predisenting Ron

HE doesn’t. He’s getting what he wanted, so in the quietly bubbling cesspool between his ears there’s no guilt attached to anything he’s done. I think his frantic flailing about is to avoid criticism, not arrest.

ETA: Or as Dr. Rrrrrobotnik points out, to maintain the fiction that his election win is legitimate.

      • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

If he’s guilty as hell, he doesn’t seem to possess Putins cold blooded capacity to power through it.

    • What did Trump think he got that 0.5% of Rosneft for anyways???

Almost 0% chance Trump is innocent.

    • Jgb979

Guilty + stupid enough to think swinging at things with a sledgehammer will just make them go away.

    • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

My guess? Trump hasn’t actually had any knowing contact with the Russians (his staff is another story) but he wanted the Flynn thing to go away because it ties to the narrative that he was dependent on them for his election.

It’s really really important to Trump that his presidential win was legit (or is seen as legit) because it’s key to his ego. He won the biggest, yoogest popularity contest ever, and these meanies are trying to taint it because they’re jealous. So he leaned on Comey to make the investigation go away, because Comey works for him and that’s his understanding of how underlings are supposed to be told to do things.

TL;DR: Probably no collusion, definitely a coverup.

      • Joe Beese

If Mueller isn’t stopped, he’s going to uncover Trump’s money laundering for the Russian mob.

      • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

I’m leaning in that direction, although I wouldn’t write out collusion out completely at this point. If all the flailing and obstruction is about protecting his vanity, that’s an indication of a man that’s unfit to be a President.
I think that our descendants (if we have any) will look back and say”Why didn’t they invoke the 25th amendment the day he started lying about his inauguration crowd?”

        • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

I mean, the answer to that is “a guy with that fragile an ego would be the kind of person who would staff his cabinet with bootlicks.” And normally I’d be unwilling to make this big an assumption based entirely on my read of him as a person, but it’s been borne out so far. Like, Trump actually broke with Bannon for a while because he got jealous of people calling Bannon the real president. He really is that thin-skinned.

      • Lance Thrustwell

If it turns out that some people in his campaign had been actively colluding with Russia without Trump’s knowledge, and Trump gets dragged down by it because no one can believe that he could have possibly been that self-absorbed and oblivious…

        I’m okay with that!

        • Dr. Rrrrrobotnik

Unfortunately, Paul Ryan’s “he’s new to this” excuse makes it pretty clear that Trump is allowed to be too incompetent to crime but simultaneously is competent enough to president.

          • Lance Thrustwell

            (sighs). Yeah.

      • andyshelt

Although, he may be more concerned that the growing investigation could force him to release his tax returns and reveal his business links (legitimate or not) with Russia which, while not illegal, taken together with the collusion of his staff would look distinctly dubious.

    • Latverian Diplomat

Trump got caught all the time in the private sector. Used money and connections to get out of most of the consequences, and lied his ass off to repair his reputation afterward.

He is doing what has worked for him in the past. Will it work for a POTUS? So far, so good? :(

I can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone besides Donald Trump thinks that having a businessman as President is a good idea. The whole idea of justice or even of a balance of powers is completely anathema to business, which is solely about amassing as much market share as possible and squashing anyone who gets in the way.

    • I tried once to explain this to my brother-in-law, but it didn’t take.

    • Steve Cole

I also not understand. Most of us have had jobs, we have a basic understanding of how business operates. The idea that business has superior magic sauce directly contradicts first hand experience. Now that I type this, I think business has much to answer for.

It’s rather like “Let’s go with the pros in the military.” Many pros work in the military, but ask anyone who’s had to be fitted with a uniform, equipped with gear, or visited a VA, and they’ll laugh their asses off at the professionals.

So, when the WH releases a statement from Rump pledging to NOT fire Mueller, will the MSM go all “He’s finally acting presidential”?

Then, of course, three days later when all is forgotten in the next shit-storm to boil out of Rump and/or the Republican Congress – Rump will fire Mueller anyway….

As Newtie says, “Circumstances [ will ] have changed…”

From the fever swamps of the Right:

I smelled a a rat when Mueller was appointed but the fact that he has hired Clinton Foundation hacks and a bag man for Obama is the bitter end for me. When you couple this with the Comey hearing and what is now shaping up to be the incessant drumbeat for impeachment based on absolutely nothing, you get me frothing at the mouth in a pre-stroke condition. Newt Gingrich has been about the only voice out there to be as incandescently enraged about all this, while most of the GOP is silent, indifferent or playing along with the MFM-generated meme. And by the way, there has never been a special counsel which ended its investigation with a complete exoneration of the target. NEVER. Somebody somewhere connected to Trump or Trump himself is going to go down. This is an unmitigated insult and a slap in the face. I say fire Mueller, ignore the courts and ram home the agenda. Mr. President, your legitimate presidency, agenda and administration are in the throes of a coup from several fronts. The time to act is now.

    • BigCSouthside

He’s sabotaging the ACA and fucking no one is on the news yelling that for hours at the American people.

      • Pre-Existing Condition Jack

For once he’s doing exactly what he said he would. He’s killing the ACA and blaming the Democrats for it. He said that was his strategy all along.

There is no fucking death spiral no more than there were any “death panels”. It’s fucking insulting.

        • theCryptofishist

These people seem very… fixated on death.

        • Invidosa

What blows my mind is how his own cult of piss pants sycophants and ass kissers who voted for him are so blind to reality that they don’t see how blantently the been fucking lied to. The sheer level of self delusion is frightening

      • Vagenda of Rebel Scum

He can try all he wants. When people can’t get insurance they’ll blame Trump. They expected him to fix it, not make excuses. He’ll always have his cult followers, but most sane people won’t accept his excuses.

I don’t understand this “blocking from viewing” thing. Can’t anybody view a twitter timeline? Even non-twitterers? I seem to remember viewing a few threads before I even had a twitter account.

      • Pre-Existing Condition Jack

I can and do. I have no Twitter account at all, but I read some users timelines.

    Heh, another good read:
“Emperor Trump’s sycophantic cabinet meeting stinks of Beijing-like obeisance”
    Isaac Stone Fish

“Sadly for Americans, Trump’s requirement that his underlings praise him is not the only way the president is prodding Washington towards Beijing-like levels of obeisance, opacity, prevarication and corruption. Trump’s insistence on “loyalty” from government officials – from low-level appointees to the recently fired FBI director James Comey – calls to mind the chief Chinese corruption investigators, heads of the state-security and cyber-security agencies and the journalists who have pledged “absolute loyalty” to Xi. “

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said the notion firing Mueller, would “certainly be an extraordinarily unwise move.” […]

He’s Sooooo going to fire Mueller

    • NastyBossetti

“An extraordinarily unwise move” is the tagline for this presidency.

      • theCryptofishist

Not with all those two-bit words. “Hold my beer*” remains the standard bearer.

See? Trump is smarter than Obama, Obama only learned about being President, Trump will get to learn about getting impeached as well.

  • Pre-Existing Condition Jack

When all this comes into account, and it will come into account, these MAGA cultists and all those who allowed this man to gorge himself on our precious liberties will eventually have to look themselves in the mirror. They’ll have to explain to their children and their children’s children just why they did or did not do. We may be suffering now, but in the fullness of time they will have to answer to something and when that happens, may god show no mercy on them. May they suffer all the indignities of the Nuremburg Trials. May they burn a thousand deaths for every human they have made suffer.

They have hitched their wagon to a dying, mad horse and it is sending them off a cliff. Many of us will go down with them but more of us will not. We have long memories and we will not forget this shitshow.

They’re going to have to kill me to stop me from finding out the truth. Plain and simple. I am not afraid of physical death. I am more afraid of intellectual death. They want to fucking rape our Constitution because of, what? Tax cuts? One man’s fragile, egg-shell ego? They want to believe they’re the heroes here? Tough shit! They’re the evil fucking Empire.

    • yyyaz

Their children will be so indoctrinated into the cult that they will never question its origins. Hell, they will have their own hymnals, confession booths, sacraments and arranged marriages. And snappy Heaven’s Gate unies.

  • YoBunnyBunny

And Trump & Co. seriously believe Mueller doesn’t have the Motherfucker of Kill Switches lined up and ready to get thrown??? I’m sure Mueller and all of his investigators can collectively fuck shit up if Mueller gets canned.

    • SisterArtemis

It’s pretty unwise to piss of the FBI peeps. They are rather loyal to not just each other, but their work.

Here are some other Republicans, shitting on the idea…

If Trump actually does fire Mueller, all these Republican heroes will express their concern and go right back to fucking up America as if nothing has happened.

By the way: Am I alone in thinking that the only interesting thing that’s likely to come out of the Sessions hearing will be a new world record in saying “I can’t answer that in a public hearing” and “I don’t recall” the most times in one day?
